One must be a San Francisco Giants fan to enter the Gates of Paradise. That’s in Acts of the Apostles I believe and in the Apocryphal text the Epistle to Willie Mays 😛 thanks for the kind words…
Thank you for a really awesome post. And why wouldn’t be A giants fan no less

You betcha. Been a Giants fan since I was a littlle girl and they were in NY.

That is so awesome! Since NY! Shoot, that was 1958! I came to like them as an adult but wasn’t, sadly, a fan as a kid. I grew up in a non-sports home so I pulled for a little of everything. The only constant in the universe is that the Dodgers are pure evil. That much is in the good book! LOL

Well my dear grandfather was a giants fan and listened to them on a little brown radio. Since my grandfather was my hero I always liked the things he liked. He even had a bookie and bet on the games. You are right about the Dodgers lol lol lol

Hi Bill,
To whom is this post addressed?

How do Protestants remain Protestants with the (almost literal) mountain of evidence against them?

Church Fathers, the Gospels, St. Paul, St. Peter, and most of all, logic!

It also befuddles me as to how the Reformation created new churches in the first place. It seems to me that most breaks in the Church at that time took place out of anger, not legitimate doctrinal disputes (Henry VII is a prime example).

It seems the anger took over, the split occurred, and the doctrinal stuff got worked out later. That’s probably why 95% of it is so crazy.

If only Protestants did this:
“He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Hear the good news of the RCC I mean…
Very simply, the RCC may have the good news, but Protestants have BETTER news!

What I mean by BETTER news is;

a) Guarantee of salvation. Eternal security. Once Saved Always Saved.

b) Going to heaven immediately after death, no need for the purifying flames of purgatory.

c) No need to worry about sin any more because Jesus has paid the full price of all your sins past present and future, once and for all. You are free to sin boldly, as many times as you like.

d) Every individual can obtain all the necessary information for themselves by personal prayer, discernment and studying the bible (“sola scriptura”). No need to believe or obey any “infallible” church teaching. You determine exactly what you wish to believe from the Bible.

e) You are free to form a new church/denomination anytime you want if you don’t agree with everything your current church/denomination teaches, without being labelled a heretic.

f) Jesus is always available to answer your every petition immediately, whenever you ask Him. No need to beat around the bush by asking men, Saints, Angels or Mother Mary to pray for you.

If you know of even better news than this, do let me know!

I like the quote. I’m sure it’s good advise for me. I understand what James wrote when he said the tongue can’t be tamed. That same tongue blesses God and curses His creatures (other people).

a) Incorrect. The Reformed Churches believe in OSAS. Lutherans hold that Salvation can be lost by loss of faith. Methodists also reject this view. Please differentiate between different denominations when making such a blanket statement.

b) Please show me the Book, Chapter, and Verse where Purgatory is mentioned as understood by the Catholic Church. The Orthodox don’t believe in Purgatory either so they must be Protestant Heretics. Or if you can’t show me the B,C,V, show me the word Purgatory in the writings of Church Fathers, Augustine or before.

c) In practice, true faith will always bear good works. These works however are not necessary for salvation as Faith alone justifies (according to the Protestant Churches).

d) Some denominations teach this. The Bible is the sole source of authority, and it teaches some doctrines clearly, while others aren’t. This is why Pastors in many Protestant Churches hold advanced degrees in Biblical languages so that the Church (assembly) can come to a consensus.

e) According to your faith, the Second Vatican Council declared that everyone has the right to religious freedom. Or do you reject that? In addition the Orthodox could make the same argument against the Roman church. Who’s right?

f) I totally agree with the first part of your statement. The Letter to the Hebrews clearly sets one mediator before mankind.

And Guanophore is now missing in action.
  • Has anyone of you met the Spirit who calls out Abba! Father! *
All that we undertake here are only exchanges of views & opinions, what really matters ultimately and is true witness is the Spirit of God.

Thanks for the clarification.
OK, so now we have the following;
GOOD NEWS : RCC
BETTER NEWS: Lutherans, Methodists
EVEN BETTER NEWS: Reformed Churches.
If anyone knows still better news than OSAS, please let me know!
b) Please show me the Book, Chapter, and Verse where Purgatory is mentioned as understood by the Catholic Church. The Orthodox don’t believe in Purgatory either so they must be Protestant Heretics. Or if you can’t show me the B,C,V, show me the word Purgatory in the writings of Church Fathers, Augustine or before.
St Augustine wrote;
“Temporal punishments are suffered by some in this life only, by some after death, by some both here and hereafter, but all of them before that last and strictest judgment. But not all who suffer temporal punishments after death will come to eternal punishments, which are to follow after that judgment” (The City of God 21:13 [A.D. 419]).

“That there should be some fire even after this life is not incredible, and it can be inquired into and either be discovered or left hidden whether some of the faithful may be saved, some more slowly and some more quickly in the greater or lesser degree in which they loved the good things that perish, through a certain purgatorial fire (Handbook on Faith, Hope, and Charity l8:69 [A.D. 421]).
c) In practice, true faith will always bear good works. These works however are not necessary for salvation as Faith alone justifies (according to the Protestant Churches).
Hence the better news. No need to to work out one’s salvation with fear and trembling as taught by St Paul.
d) Some denominations teach this. The Bible is the sole source of authority, and it teaches some doctrines clearly, while others aren’t. This is why Pastors in many Protestant Churches hold advanced degrees in Biblical languages so that the Church (assembly) can come to a consensus.
The belief and use of Sola scriptura by Lutherans, Methodists and Reformed Churches has failed to reach a consensus between Lutherans/Methodists and the Reformed Churches regarding OSAS. This proves that the Bible is not the sole source of authority.
e) According to your faith, the Second Vatican Council declared that everyone has the right to religious freedom. Or do you reject that? In addition the Orthodox could make the same argument against the Roman church. Who’s right?
I have no objection to religious freedom. You and I and everyone else have a free will to choose our religion.
f) I totally agree with the first part of your statement. The Letter to the Hebrews clearly sets one mediator before mankind.
God has also dispensed many graces and favors to mankind through his Mother, the Saints and Angels. This is the beauty of the loving communion of Saints in the mystical body of Christ that Catholics believe in and cherish.

I used to feel the same about 5-6 years ago. However,I learned to accept that one is not going to change anyone’s convictions, unless it comes from within.Protestants as all other Christians, including Catholics and Orthodoxs follow the traditon they were born into and raised. You cannot blame them, truly you cannot. Some Protestants do actually take the time to study the early church and the church fathers.

Most Protestants I have encountered I have no clue or knowledge of historical Christianity prior to the Reformation. And why?Because they were taught the sole adherence to scripture. Many Protestants teach that anything outside of scripture is meaningless and has no weight in comparison to scripture. Call it fear, lazy or ignorance, but most do not know church history. Some do not even know the history of the Reformation let alone their own church.

Let them be and pray for unity, not more divisions.

You know what’s equally scary? Ask the typical Catholic sitting by you in the pews on Sunday about the magisterium, infallibility, indulgences, beatific vision, ecumenical councils, heresies, or even basic catechesis and be prepared to be stunned at the overwhelming lack of knowledge. My experience is that Catholics and Protestants have an abundant flock of ignorant folks. Not all Catholics are EWTN-viewing experts, far far far from it.

Oh I agree, trust me.As a Director of Catechesis,I know what most folks do not know. 😊

LOL…When I teach Christianity when we arrive at Ancient Rome in our history books (I teach sixth grade in public school, California) you’d be scratching your head after hearing both Catholic and Protestant kids’ statements and guesses. When asked who betrayed Jesus to the Pharisees 9 out of 10 kids will say “Peter.” When asked who Mary was many, I mean many, have told me Mary was Jesus’ sister! Most of them look at me like I’m INSANE when I say that Christianity teaches a bodily resurrection. They tell me that they thought Jesus’ GHOST rose from the empty tomb, not His literal body. Most of them have never heard of the Blessed Trinity, the majority don’t know the Our Father prayer, and basic catechesis is zippo. And these are 12-year-olds. I notice it gets progressively worse each year. This year the only kid in my room who can answer this stuff is Matt, my altar boy Catholic kid. Go Matt! 👍🙂 The other kids, including a prissy little evangelical girl whose parents are maniacs (I mean maniacs) can’t answer even basic questions about church history or the Bible. It’s getting worse and worse. Sad to see what I see, too! God help us both!!

The most common hazard however is the trap of using ASSUMPTIONS.

When we assume something, we have already fixed the boundaries of our beliefs. As Christians, we should refrain from ASSUMING.
Let’s test that with your own post.
By that I mean we must take the word of Scripture directly, clearly and without dilution. If its not in the Bible, DISCARD it.
But that is an assumption, which, by the way, is nowhere found in scripture. By your own criterea (If its not in the Bible DISCARD it), I must discard it. Unless, of course, you can quote book, chapter, and verse which says if something is not in the Bible, discard it.
Never assume on behalf of God.
I agree but can’t help wondering why you assumed the above.
Don’t interpret using your own contexts and personal interpretations.
Sorry, but it sounds like that’s exactly what you’re doing.
