I love a Catholic girl but I'm Atheist?

Well, it’s very easy at a young age to have strong feelings, but it’s best for the relationship to slow it down, which is probably about the last thing you would want to do.

In many relationships, they proceed really fast. Some can meet, get together, get very physical, and break up, all within a very short period of time. In times past, this whole process could take, I think years, and they didn’t get very physical till after marriage, which was a lot more prudent.

Now, we have a lot of divorce when people do marry, and I believe part of it is probably due to not taking the time to really get to know the other person. This is a process which can be rushed but really shouldn’t be.

If one does marry a Catholic, the Catholic would be expected to adhere to a number of different ways of viewing life.

There is the concept of not getting physical before marriage, which you seem to be already aware of.

After marriage, Catholics don’t believe in using contraception. There is a kind of openness to life and God’s will. In some cases, couples use Natural Family Planning, which requires that a couple abstain from intercourse during the woman’s fertile period.
Both parties would need to be “on the same page” about this, and other, issue.

This goes against what a lot of what modern culture teaches. Most others will just get on the Pill, but we believe that the Pill, especially, in addition to being contraception is also an abortifacient, causing an abortion, essentially.

Now, were you to marry her in the future, as a Catholic, she would want to marry in the Church. In order to do that, the husband would need to agree to raise any children, Catholic.

The way to get married is also in an actual church with a priest. Those are some of our beliefs.

Now, let’s say you are right, that one day you do end up marrying. As a Catholic, it is a requirement to go to at least weekly mass and on “Holy Days of Obligation”. She would also be expected to go to confession with a priest from time to time, receive communion and the sacraments.

She would have her rosary, holy water, possibly religious statues and pictures. She would believe in the authority of the Church, pope, bishops, and priests.

She would want her children baptized Catholic and follow the teachings of the Church.

If you married, how would you anticipate you’d handle Sundays? Would she go to Church on Sundays, week after week, by herself?

Next, were there to be children, would they go with her? So, would you sleep in late while she does that? What would happen when the children would say, “Hey Mom, why does Dad get to stay home? I want to stay home with Dad!”?

Would you back your wife up but still stay at home? Do you see how this would create problems. Well, you would be saying with your example what you believed, and your example is even stronger than words. You’d be undoing whatever she tried to do.

Would you ever be able to pray together as a couple?

Many non-Catholics are quite hostile to the Catholic faith, as you have seen. You would actually need to not be the one attacking her but defend her…in my opinion, so she wouldn’t be facing that all by herself.

If you were not both Catholic, it’s almost a given you’d argue over matters of faith and religion sooner or later.

There are some who are able to manage marriages with differences in religion. However, we also get many on the forum with problems.

The Protestants refer to a believer and a non-believer as “unevenly yoked”.

If you truly are interested in God or religion, you would probably pray with or without her, go to church with or without her. RCIA (Rite of Christian Inititiation) would be the step if you were ever serious about Catholicism, as someone mentioned in a previous post. You can even go just to learn what it entails in order to better make an informed choice as to whether you would be willing to take on the additional commitments.

However, the ideal is to begin as friends, know each other very well and proceed from there.

There are already issues of lack of trust. You didn’t trust her enough to tell her the truth, so you are afraid she won’t be able to accept you as you are. If you believed she would accept you as you are, I don’t think you would have felt the need to lie to her.

You were basically telling her what you thought she wanted to hear, instead of the truth. Right now, that’s not a good basis for a relationship, lying and secret keeping.

As Catholics, we believe in striving to be truthful for many reasons. Lies will generally inevitably be found out, just a question of time. When the truth comes out, there is a loss of trust, also on the part of the one being lied to. It makes it that much more difficult to establish trust. If you tell the truth, you may not be believed.

Catholics also believe marriage is not just a legal matter, but a sacramental one, as well. We believe it is holy, sacred, established by God. So, a lot of what other couples may find acceptable within marriage, pornography, etc. would not be acceptable to a devout, practicing Catholic.

Anyway, there’s a lot more to it than this, but that’s a summary of some of the highlights of differences between a Catholic perspective on relationships and marriage from a secular or non-Catholic one.

Take it slow. This is not to try to discourage you but to prepare you. If this is indeed God at work, things will work out even so.

Good luck! 😉

if I’m harsh, sorry. It sounds like you are in love with the cute French virgin, as a conquest. How can an entity you don’t believe in lead you to her? How convenient ? Hopefully she has a solid discernment process of her own.

Wow. What did you read in his post to come to this judgment. If he is reconsidering Christianity as he stated, I can’t see how your post will help him get there.

OP do not take henpecked’s post as representative.

Well, you are right about one thing. That was harsh.

Perhaps you could show the Christian example of charity.

okay. We all have our opinions. I’ll step back and watch this thread. Maybe I will learn something.

and Hoosier - I like your signature line.

This is a tremendously important thing right here…You have discovered how one’s words can come back to haunt them. You started the relationship with a lie…and it bit you.

This is wonderful…but just remember - - that one lie has now put you on the bubble, so to speak. You have to be especially careful and honest with both her and yourself.

You don’t “keep her”. She is not a possession. If you truly love her then you want her happiness and if that is with you great, but if it is with someone else - then you must accept that too. That is what Love is…
That said, you do not have to “show her” that you love her and you have changed. If these things are so, then she will see them in everything you do and say.
You will be a gentleman and you will treat her with respect. You will be honest, gentle and forthright.
Love is a two way street and she should treat you in the same way.
Then - if this is meant to be - it will be. If not then you will both have grown tremendously and will be able to part as friends.

Peace
James
Excellent. I second this.

You would not be the first to be brought back to Faith due to a wonderful woman…

God is pretty good at reaching us…

Here is a talk that I hope you will watch… it is by a wonderful professor who uses logic to see all sides of the question of is God real/is there a God. Blind Faith is pretty worthless. Dig into everything. Look for non-biblical sources for Jesus… He was real…I believe He is God. Find out for yourself. It is not hypocritical to open your mind and learn. I imagine you no longer believe in the tooth fairy, right? Knowledge tied to understanding leads to wisdom.

Here is a link to a lecture you will enjoy… hard questions from Atheists abound… Peter Kreeft at Iowa state… rationality of belief in God

I became an atheist in my early teen years because I didn’t like many Catholic people and I started to believe in science to explain how the world came about and such…

Right now I would say I am an Agnostic, but I’m really on the verge of possibly becoming a Catholic again. Like I explained in my post, I feel God’s presence in the Mass and I think this girl was put in my life by God to lead me to Him. I also have questioned my Atheism and I can’t come up with an answer to where moral law came from, and how the world came about from nothing (Big Bang Theory). Now that I’m really thinking about these things, I think that a God really does exist.

We are practically boyfriend/girlfriend at this point. I would gladly wait to have sex with her until marriage. She also doesn’t believe in contraception, and I greatly respect this as well and would gladly abstain from sex when she wanted to even in our marriage.

For the person who said they are happy to hear about a religious girl from France, her whole family is religious as well. She invited me to dinner with her family last night and they are as lovely as her. They have many religious things in their house, like pictures of Jesus and statues of Jesus/Mary and a crucifix on the wall. She has six siblings (because her parents don’t believe in contraception as well) and they are all religious. Her parents are kind to me and they are so happy that I was able to be led to God by her. Her parents are so religious that they actually named my girlfriend “Madeleine” after a church in Paris called La Madeleine.

I haven’t known this girl for only two weeks, it’s been longer than that. I’ve actually known her for about eight weeks now, which is like two months. I’ve never felt this way about anyone before and I really love her, I would do anything to care for her and make her happy…

I am absolutely fine with marrying her in a Catholic Church and I would actually want her to raise our children Catholic. I think it would be better for them to follow this religion and I think my girlfriend would make a wonderful mother.

I wrote a big reply and it was deleted! Hate when that happens:banghead:

Anyway, two things I’ll coment on a little…

1.) Monseigneur Georges Lemaître, a Belgian Catholic Priest, was the originator of what would become known as the “Big Bang Theory”

2.) I think you are getting quite ahead of yourself, but I understand you are young and passionate about a beautifull girl. The possitive thing is that you are looking at the Catholic Faith through Love! That’s what we must do. 👍

But remember love is also a mere feeling when its not a devotional love called Agape. This feeling of love can come and go, but our devotion and love from above is what defines our faith. This will get you through the storms of life and relationships.

I can only offer limited help due to my age. But,

First, try to understand catholicism. What doctrine do you not believe now? I can help you there. We can help you there.

I too believe in science. My wife and I are scientists. And I too, don’t like many Catholic people. However, both of those things actually help my faith rather than destroy it. Most scientists I know are not atheists. And historically many of the greatest scientists have been Catholic. It is the media and some academia’s distortion of science and the pitting of science against faith that is the lie that many believe. Biology, Geology, and many of the sciences have the same suffix as Theology. And the process of Logic is as important and present in all of them.

It is so wonderful to hear that you are feeling called to a relationship with God through your girlfriend (or almost girlfriend). And it is nice to hear about her devout family too. It was very encouraging to read your post, and as I said before, it really sounds like you are on the right track.

One thing I would point out: St. Paul tells us in the Bible that husbands are called to love their wives as Jesus loves the church. And how does Jesus love the church? By laying down his life in sacrifice. So a husband is called to have a sacrificial love for his wife. Most husbands will not have occasion to literally give up their lives in sacrifice for their wives, but a husband should be willing to give up things and to put his wife’s needs and well-being first. You are not yet married to this young woman, but you are already thinking about it (though don’t go too far too fast – you have only known her a couple of months). Still, you might just keep in mind that model of sacrificial love.

You also mentioned an interest in science. If you would like to read more about how faith and science can be compatible, I would strongly recommend a book called “Modern Physics and Ancient Faith” by Stephen Barr. The book explains how and why there really is no conflict between modern physics and traditional Christian and Jewish beliefs. The author is a physics professor, so he does know his subject matter when it comes to modern physics.

Alex,

It’s time to slow your roll.

It sounds to me like you are still in high school, and yet you’re talking about marrying a girl you just met two months ago. Chances are this is just puppy love. Very few high school relationships actually survive into the “real world.”

As for the religion aspect – if you were raised Catholic, and you’re still in high school as it sounds, where are your parents? Why are you going to Mass with this girl instead of with them? Why didn’t God speak to you when you went to church previously?

If you really want to figure out how you feel about Catholicism, you need to stop going to church with this girl that you’re infatuated with. Honestly, I wouldn’t even go with your parents. Go by yourself. You need to experience Mass without outside forces affecting the experience. And you need time (I used communion, since I couldn’t take it anyway) to really sit and reflect on things.

Second – if you’re not sure how you feel about Catholicism, do you know how this girl feels about dating a non-Catholic? Would she still want you if weren’t going to Mass? If not, I suggest you break it off. That’s too much pressure. My now-husband is very Catholic, but made it clear from the beginning that he wanted me regardless of my faith. IF you’re going to change (emphasis on the IF) it needs to be for you and not for her. And at your age, it can be hard to tell the difference.

Something that occurred to me this morning that I would like to put out there for you Alex.
You described how the “friend” had a video of you ranting about religion and the pope etc…You were obviously very emotional and very “into” those thoughts feelings and beliefs.
You now describe how you feel God’s presence at mass and how you think that this girl was sent by God to lead you back to Him…Again, very emotionally charged, and very into the thoughts, feelings and beliefs.

The poster above who advised you to “cool your jets” is on to something.

It appears that there is a lot of emotion, a lot of ideas, thoughts, questions, (not to mention hormones :choocho: :D) racing around in this situation.

So take your time. Make sure that what you are thinking and feeling are real. This is called discernment and is extremely important whether it be in regards to faith or marriage.
Get a book on the faith - maybe Catholicism form Dummies and read through it. Ponder it deeply.

Peace
James

👍 Words of wisdom if I ever heard it. When I was in high school, it seemed like relationships never lasted and that people were always dating someone new. The reason being: they didn’t actually love each other, but were merely experiencing infatuation, which is what happens to most people, especially in high school. Just remember OP, that love is much more than a “feeling”. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church says in paragraph 1766, "To love is to will the good of another." And as someone had mentioned earlier, that “feeling” or infatuation will go away, and then what will u do? I believe this is one of main reasons why there are so many divorces, because those feelings fade, and when a marriage isn’t firmly rooted in God, it falls apart in a lot of cases. One main aspect about marriage for Catholics, from what I understand, is about the spouses helping each other to get to heaven (our real home), and u have to be that kind of guy for her, and of course, she would have to do the same for u.

Alex, what catholic doctrine do you disagree with?

And you can change your religion in your profile.

Alex, forget about how old are you. Some people tend to measure your maturity and capability level with how old you are. What matters is how spiritually mature you are and what is your attitude towards everything. I have known seniors who act like immature teenagers…And just because your love story sounds pure, sincere and almost “perfect” doesn’t mean it is “puppy” love. Better that than be involved in the “hook-up culture” .

Since you are in first year of college, do your best in your studies, graduate, do internship and get a job. You have to prepare yourself for the future. Meanwhile, build your relationship with God through her! Instead of focusing on what a secular boyfriend & girlfriend do physically, grow spiritually, intellectually and emotionally together. Become the Man God Created You to Be.
