If you really want to figure out how you feel about Catholicism, you need to stop going to church with this girl that you’re infatuated with. Honestly, I wouldn’t even go with your parents. Go by yourself. You need to experience Mass without outside forces affecting the experience.
I strongly disagree. God may be using this young woman as an instrument to call this young man back to the faith. Why close that door? She brings him closer to God, it is his motivation at the moment. When time goes by, he will attend Mass not because of her. Conversion happens every day, it is not just a one day or one time conversion.

Alex, what catholic doctrine do you disagree with?
This is actually a good question, Alex. If you are going from Athiest to Catholic who has no qualms about anything in the Deposit of Faith in a matter of a couple months on account of a pretty and nice girl, forgive us for doubting your genuine conviction. 😉

Yet, don’t think that we don’t see a great change in you either! We just want you to have a sound foundation before putting the pedal to the metal.

I myself, met my wife who did not know any english and within 6 months proposed to her!!! So I’m certainly not against moving fast towards something you know in your heart is good. But I did not do this impetuously or without a strong faith in the Lord. I was 29 yrs old and had experience with relationships and my own faith journey. I spent many hours in prayer and discernment with Jesus about someday finding a wife. I prayed that he would help me find a good woman to mother my children. I went to the Church on my own seeking Baptism and the blessings of Jesus in order to be in a pure communion with Him. I went to Mass alone for yrs, and taught Sunday school to the youth.

You should share with us some of your faith. We know you have a huge attraction for this girl. A little time and discernment will help you BOTH to know if you will seek Holy Matrimony. But first things first.

Maybe you could start with sharing with us about your faith in Jesus?

Alex, forget about how old are you. Some people tend to measure your maturity and capability level with how old you are. What matters is how spiritually mature you are and what is your attitude towards everything. I have known seniors who act like immature teenagers…And just because your love story sounds pure, sincere and almost “perfect” doesn’t mean it is “puppy” love. Better that than be involved in the “hook-up culture” .

Since you are in first year of college, do your best in your studies, graduate, do internship and get a job. You have to prepare yourself for the future. Meanwhile, build your relationship with God through her! Instead of focusing on what a secular boyfriend & girlfriend do physically, grow spiritually, intellectually and emotionally together. Become the Man God Created You to Be.

👍 I’ve heard great things about this book, and the customer comments seem to reflect that!

Forgive me, but I feel like if you disagree with the advice to explore your faith on your own instead of in the company of a girl you’re infatuated with that you either didn’t date much at that age or else are putting the desire to bring someone else into the fold above your common sense.

I can’t even begin to count the number of bands, movies, hobbies, restaurants, etc. that were suddenly the new best thing in my life because they were recommended/liked by someone I had just started dating. Most of those interests died when the relationship did. The only way Alex can tell if he’s enjoying Mass or enjoying the chance to sit next to a pretty girl for an hour is to take the pretty girl out of the equation.

If Alex converts and then this girl moves back to France, let’s say, is he still going to feel such a pull to the church?

I can see your point. You both have good reasons for your conclusions.

We shouldnt assume this is merely infatuation just because it is a short time, yet we know that even a genuine attraction for a girl can cloud our genuine convictions.

I think, in part, we can owe Alexs’ softening of heart towards God to this young woman. But this is because of the goodness of God, and her trust in God.

Whether Alex is better off going to Mass alone, or with her is up to his faith. Right now, I think she has inspired him to open his heart towards God. Is it genuine??? That’s for some time to tell.

Alex,… I think there is wisdom in pursuing the faith outside of your relationship with your friend. It cannot be done to please a girl. This would actually be doing what you are offended at from your friend’s accusations.

ON the other hand, I can tell you that many people enter RCIA just to please someone they are dating or engaged or married to, and end up having a very deep conversion themselves…even after the original person who caused them to be there is out of the picture.

I too believe in science. My wife and I are scientists. And I too, don’t like many Catholic people. However, both of those things actually help my faith rather than destroy it. Most scientists I know are not atheists. And historically many of the greatest scientists have been Catholic. It is the media and some academia’s distortion of science and the pitting of science against faith that is the lie that many believe. Biology, Geology, and many of the sciences have the same suffix as Theology. And the process of Logic is as important and present in all of them.
THIS. seriously, so many people fail to understand this.

I became an atheist in my early teen years because I didn’t like many Catholic people and I started to believe in science to explain how the world came about and such…

Right now I would say I am an Agnostic, but I’m really on the verge of possibly becoming a Catholic again. Like I explained in my post, I feel God’s presence in the Mass and I think this girl was put in my life by God to lead me to Him. I also have questioned my Atheism and I can’t come up with an answer to where moral law came from, and how the world came about from nothing (Big Bang Theory). Now that I’m really thinking about these things, I think that a God really does exist.

We are practically boyfriend/girlfriend at this point. I would gladly wait to have sex with her until marriage. She also doesn’t believe in contraception, and I greatly respect this as well and would gladly abstain from sex when she wanted to even in our marriage.

For the person who said they are happy to hear about a religious girl from France, her whole family is religious as well. She invited me to dinner with her family last night and they are as lovely as her. They have many religious things in their house, like pictures of Jesus and statues of Jesus/Mary and a crucifix on the wall. She has six siblings (because her parents don’t believe in contraception as well) and they are all religious. Her parents are kind to me and they are so happy that I was able to be led to God by her. Her parents are so religious that they actually named my girlfriend “Madeleine” after a church in Paris called La Madeleine.

I haven’t known this girl for only two weeks, it’s been longer than that. I’ve actually known her for about eight weeks now, which is like two months. I’ve never felt this way about anyone before and I really love her, I would do anything to care for her and make her happy…

I am absolutely fine with marrying her in a Catholic Church and I would actually want her to raise our children Catholic. I think it would be better for them to follow this religion and I think my girlfriend would make a wonderful mother.
After reading what you’ve written here, my heart is thoroughly refreshed with joy! Thank you for your conversion story! I know the Lord is good and generous and patient and kind, and I am firmly confident that He will do amazing things with you and with this young woman. May God grant you both blessings in abundance! Please also understand that you’re talking to people on an internet forum, and we are not representative of the Catholic Church, but only of people who like to regularly go to an internet forum… so take everything we say with a grain of salt 😉

Alex science does explain some of the world very well, but a problem arises when people see how it explains some parts of reality and then think that it explains all of reality, and then the parts of reality it can’t explain just get ignored and explained away (one common method of this is called “evolutionary psychology” - it attempts to offer a “biological” explanation of humans in our moral, intellectual and social capabilities, but it has nothing to do with real science, and many actual biologists have pointed this out).

This way of thinking - that science explains all of reality - is just like saying that because a metal detector detects metal objects very well, the only thing that exists is what the metal detector can detect, and then you try to use metal detectors in cooking, gardening and painting instead of using a spatula, a shovel and a paintbrush. No, metal detectors are for detecting metal: science is for examining the physical world in a certain manner that allows certain facets of it to become more clear.

The Catholic faith loves scientific inquiry, and it has always been a patron of the sciences. The “father” of the big bang theory was a Catholic priest, Father Georges Lemaître, who was also a great physicist from Belgium. Perhaps you can ask your gf how to pronounce his name correctly (don’t say the ‘s’!).

There are countless examples like Geogres Lemaître.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church says:
159 Faith and science: "Though faith is above reason, there can never be any real discrepancy between faith and reason. Since the same God who reveals mysteries and infuses faith has bestowed the light of reason on the human mind, God cannot deny himself, nor can truth ever contradict truth."37 "Consequently, methodical research in all branches of knowledge, provided it is carried out in a truly scientific manner and does not override moral laws, can never conflict with the faith, because the things of the world and the things of faith derive from the same God. The humble and persevering investigator of the secrets of nature is being led, as it were, by the hand of God in spite of himself, for it is God, the conserver of all things, who made them what they are."38
vatican.va/archive/ccc_css/archive/catechism/p1s1c3a1.htm

Faith and science do not contradict, they are friends. And really they are pretty much the same thing: just like in a biology class, students learn about the theory of evolution; or just like in a physics class, students learn about the theory of relativity; in a Catholic sunday school class, students learn about God. Usually most people believe what is being said on the authority of the teacher. But if a student is skeptical of evolution in a biology class, or is skeptical about relativity in a physics class, he or she could go to professors at colleges and ask questions about it that could be answered at a sufficient level, probably much better than what your high school biology or physics teacher will be able to say. And it’s the same with faith: if you are skeptical, that is what the great theologians, either at a Catholic university, or the hall of fame greats like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas among many others, are there for, to explain it better. The one sense in that it would be different is that there are “mysteries” of the Catholic faith that are too deep for our finite intellects to understand very well (The Trinity, for example), and so we have “faith” in them because they have been revealed by God, who does not deceive. But this isn’t a blind faith, it is totally rational, because it is claimed that we can know, through reason, that the truths that the Church teaches have been revealed by God. They are truth that are beyond what we can come to know about him through natural reason alone, which he revealed out of love for us. In fact, it would be irrational not to believe in them because they have been revealed by God.

With that in mind I would now ask you to read articles 27-38 in the Catechism, found here:

vatican.va/archive/ccc_css/archive/catechism/p1s1c1.htm

Now I believe you’re in high school (when I was in high school I was an atheist, but I converted to the Catholic Church in my college years), and I could recommend many books that explain what I’d like to type now but can’t really fit into a forum post, things that I as a book worm would have loved to have read. I would like to try to explain what goes behind what I linked from the Catechism. The Catechism was a book written by Catholic bishops and for Catholic bishops, and there are many terms in it (“faith”, “mysteries” and God being the “conserver of all things”) that make much more sense to a person who has studied a little philosophy as a Bishop has (and as I like to pretend that I have on the internet lol). I would have read this article as a high school student and thought these words were dumb and meaningless.

But what I’d like to recommend for you, given what you’ve said and how you’ve called yourself an agnostic, is to find a bible or a copy of the New Testament, and begin to read the New Testament and ask God if what you read in there about Jesus of Nazareth could really be true. Ask God if he is real, if he loves us and sent us his only son to show us the way back to him. Talk to God while reading the New Testament and when you go to mass or to a Church, pray to him.

Also, because lots of people seem to have such a poor understanding of Church history and they think it is an evil institution, I’d recommend watching this video series “Catholic Church: Builder of Civilization”

youtube.com/watch?v=m5siHd1P5zk&list=PL57857981F3CC5D78

The host also wrote a good book called “How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization” covering the same stuff. You probably won’t hear about all these facts in your high school history class!

I know it’s been a while, but I just wanted to update you on our relationship and my current beliefs. I consider myself a Catholic now, I believe in Jesus, and I thank God for putting my girlfriend in my life because she led me to God. My parents are very happy about this as well.

We’ve been together for around 3 months now, and we go to Mass every Sunday and I accompany her to Bible study throughout the week. My love for her and my love for God have deepened now.

Thank you for all your replies! You helped me greatly 🙂

Praise God.

Guess you need to update your “religion” status in your profile. 👍

Peace

I updated my religion to Catholic 🙂 Thank you so much, God bless you 🙂
Alex:
That’s wonderful…
Sign up for RCIA at a local parish, so you can come into communion with the Church formally…ie, actually become catholic.
