Nowhere did Christ set out to create the holy catholic church, complete with popes with red gucci slippers and gold encrusted garments. Don’t you think he would think of the Pharisee. And nowhere can it be said that Christ was a Catholic.( defining a religion).
He was a jew. Christianity came later. Now we have Roman Catholics, Greek orthodox catholics, russian orthodox catholics, plus a plethora of other christian beliefs.
Who of these qualify for salvation. Only the Roman Catholics.? And that is before we start on the rest of humanity.
God gave us brains to use. I feel sure he did not expect us to blindly follow some medieval dictum. I cannot accept that God picks favorites.
You’re wrong my friend. Catholic means universal -Jesus created our universal Church in which all of mankind was meant to be a part of. He did not create 100,000 different churches with 100,000 competing truths… There is only one Truth.

My friend, the Catholic (universal) Church put together the Bible by the power of the Holy Spirit. The Catholic Church’s doctrines including the Bible all come straight from God… God runs the Catholic Church, and this Church is infallible which means its kept free from all error through the Holy Spirit. You ought to read the Catechism…!

My friend,i know the meaning of catholic. i am trying to find out who you think is right for salvation.
it has been stated on this forum that only Catholics will be in heaven. does that mean roman catholics only, or does it include orthodox catholics .( who do not accept the pope)

the bible does not come straight from God. Nor was it put together by the universal (catholic) church. it is mythology written by man to try to explain the incomprehensible.
Fundamentalism, in any religion, is wrong.

The Holy Catholic Church that was established by Jesus Christ states that God is a merciful God, and that those who by no fault of their own cannot understand the Truth can be saved… But even these will come to know that Gods established Church is the Holy Catholic Church where the Pope is the successor of St. Peter the Apostle of Christ.

You can choose whatever it is you wish to believe. That’s your choice.

…and its quite clear you’re not a Catholic (yes I noticed the lower case “c” in your stated religion).

my lazy typing.
jesus said “seek and you will find”
it is sad that so many Catholics cease seeking. (using the more common meaning of the word, as opposed to catholic).
Jews believe in God. Muslims believe in God. Other christians believe in God. and it is the same God. or do you believe
" my god is better than your god"

Nowhere did Christ set out to create the holy catholic church, complete with popes with red gucci slippers and gold encrusted garments.
This is an assertion that hasn’t been backed up by any facts. Or Scripture.

Can you provide a verse in Scripture that says Jesus didn’t set out to create a church? Or that red gucci slippers and gold encrusted garments are an abomination?
Who of these qualify for salvation. Only the Roman Catholics.?
Firstly, rmtracey, the Church is not Roman. The Catholic Church has 23 rites, one of which is the Roman, or Latin rite, that is the most populous.

And, no, not only Roman Catholics qualify for salvation. But all who are in heaven are Catholics, whether they were listed on the parish registry of the local parish or not.
God gave us brains to use.
This is very Catholic of you to say, rmtracey! 👍
I feel sure he did not expect us to blindly follow some medieval dictum.
Be careful here, rmtracey. This is bordering on contempt for Catholicism–something that is not tolerated by the moderators. It is good for you to be here to dialogue with knowledgeable Catholics so you can learn about our faith, so I would hate to see you forced to leave because of comments similar to the above.

Just for the record: no Catholic is commanded to “blindly follow some medieval dictum.”
I cannot accept that God picks favorites.
Well, in one sense, God doesn’t pick favorites.

But in the other sense, you do believe that God picks favorites, unless you believe that every single person is saved no matter what. Atheists? Mass murderers? Pedophiles?

(Apologies to my atheist friends for grouping you in with the above. I hope you see my point though and why I did it. :o)

Well, that rules out Jesus Christ. He was born a Jew,lived as a Jew, and died a Jew. He was never a catholic. Wonder where he went. Obviously cannot be in heaven.!!!
Jesus is GOD!!! He established the Catholic Church and gave it authority in matters of faith and morals. All Church teachings carry the full authority of Christ and cannot be in error. When the Church teaches there is no salvation outside the Catholic Church that has the authority of Christ behind it.

As others have said already, it can be acceptable to go to Protestant services and the like so long as you do not participate in communion or any part that is contrary to the Catholic faith, if you are strong in your Catholic faith, etc.

I was part of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship in college (as a Catholic) and I went on a number of the retreats that they put on. We were able to worship together to the same God and grow in fellowship with one another.

But I did not neglect the fact that I was a Catholic either. I was also able to evangelize to my Protestant brothers and sisters at these retreats about the Catholic faith. Many of them had several misconceptions of what we believed and many of them simply disagreed with what we believed. So it was fruitful, both for myself and for them, to be engaged in discussions that help them understand better why I am Catholic and why I, as a Catholic, believe what I believe. Some of those people are now my closest friends and have a greater respect for Catholicism because of it.

God has not given us the demographics of heaven.

Strive to enter, rmtracey. Strive to enter.

Who put it together then? Please provide your source.
Fundamentalism, in any religion, is wrong.
Indeed. 👍

Love it! 🙂

All those things you mentioned have Catholic versions. I see no reason to go to a Protestant version when we Catholics have the same type of events. If you do not have any locally, than perhaps your calling is to help create such events for Catholics in your area?

Can you provide a verse in scripture that says Christ established the Catholic church. He was a Jew, who set out to disabuse his fellow Jews of views that he could see were wrong.
We should follow his example.

I think God, who is loving, would certainly save Atheists, Mass murders, Paedophiles, if they were ultimately deserving. I am not here to judge. God made us all. Some of us are born with an unfortunate mix of genes. God gave us those genes and I think that only God
will understand.

To suggest that questioning some very dubious beliefs is contempt for Catholicism merely reinforces this duplicity.

If , as a Catholic , you do not question , then you are no better than the fundamentalist Muslim, or any other fundamentalist

'zactly, rmt. Exactly. 👍

The Catholic Answers Forum is testament to the fact that Catholics MUST question, and that the answers will indeed be found in Christ through the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.

Why do I have to provide a verse in Scripture to prove one of our Catholic beliefs? That is your paradigm, not ours.

Our beliefs come from Christ, and the Apostles, not from Scripture, rmt. The Scriptures reflect that which the Church has been teaching from first days of Christianity.

We proclaim that the Catholic faith was whole and entire before a single word of the NT was ever put to writing.

I can.
Matthew 16:18 And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
It’ll serve not purpose for you to tell me that Peter (which means rock) was a pebble.

No, rmt. I am not suggesting that your questioning is a demonstration of contempt for Catholicism.

I am telling you that to say this:
I feel sure he did not expect us to blindly follow some medieval dictum.
is contemptuous of Catholicism.

You are proclaiming that Catholics “blindly follow” something that is “medieval”.

That is contemptuous–not to mention INCORRECT–and I suggest you stop yourself from making comments like this in the future. For it is good for you to be here.

And just to make it clear, let me proffer an analogy:

Let’s say you’re in dialogue with an atheist and he says, “If there is a god, I’m sure that he doesn’t like it that you kill babies in his name.”

You, of course, would respond with, “Ummm…Christianity does not teach that we should kill babies! That’s a very contemptuous concept you have of Christianity. Not to mention INCORRECT!”

So that’s why I am suggesting you be more respectful of what Catholicism proclaims–before you object to some teaching of ours, make sure you get it right.

Before Galileo was silenced he sent the following letter to Kepler.

“My dear Kepler, I wish that we might laugh at the remarkable stupidity of the common herd. What do you have to say about the principal philosophers of this academy who are filled with the stubbornness of an asp and do not want to look at either the planets, the moon or the telescope, even though I have freely and deliberately offered them the opportunity a thousand times? Truly, just as the asp stops its ears, so do these philosophers shut their eyes to the light of truth.”

Most Catholics will agree with that, but then again, most of our Protestant friends believe that the Holy Spirit reveals the Bible privately to individual believers. I think they call it Sola Scriptura? When I get lovey dovey with the Protestants I have to keep that on mind.

If you are so involved in the Catholic Church and attend Mass there so often, why would you even want to go to a Protestant event ? Some of what you listed sounds like you would be treading into dangerous territory because so much of what Protestants teach and believe goes against what the Church believes, and that can’t be good for you.
That’s what I thought as well. There is so much he could do for his own Church. If he has all this free time to spend in protestant churches (especially bible studies that will teach contrary to Christ and Christ’s Catholic faith) then he isn’t doing as much as he could for his own church. Not that that is wrong, if he’s only fulfilling his obligations, that’s all any of us have to do. But if he is so fired up for Christ and has all this time, why in the world would he not be growing in his own faith?
