I missed Mass this weekend…My car decided it wanted to break down…I had no way to get to Mass. Do I need to go to confession? I joined the Church this past Easter and don’t know alot of people or I would have called someone for a ride. I even thought about walking but the parish is kinda far away. This has just been an awful weekend for me…My car broke and I have no money to fix it…I missed Mass and I really wanted to be able to go. Please keep me in your prayers…And please pray that this week is better than the awful weekend I just had and that my car can get fixed cheaply.

Rest easy, you definitely don’t need to confess - a car breakdown is more than valid reason for missing Mass.

Prayers to St Catherine of Alexandria (patron saint of mechanics) about your car!

If in fact something like that extraordinary circumstance ever happens again, do realise that you can hear Mass on the Radio or on the TV and make a spiritual Communion at Communion time. It is the next best thing to being there.

First of all welcome home and God Bless you and for the tough week you have had. Our prayers are offered for a better week for you and healing for that automobile contraption.

Second - you did not sin, you intended to go to mass and your car didn’t agree with you. If unable to attend due to illness, infirmity, inclement weather, or even inclement transportation, the obligation is dispensed if the heart is pure.

I once came home late from a weekend campout with the Boy Scouts and nearly killed myself, all stinky and smelly and still in uniform, getting to a late Sunday evening mass with my son and some other scouts only to find a note on the church door it was cancelled due to the Super Bowl!! What a hoot that was - it was not my parish for sure - and never will be.

Third - call the rectory or church office to see if some parishioners own or work at a local garage that may be willing to help out. Maybe they are printed on the back of your weekly bulletin from the church. A lot of times they will go out of their way to help other parishioners who are having a rough time of it and all you need to do is ask. I know you are knew - but don’t be afraid to ask. We are all worthy of good deeds and the love of Christ through the active good works and deeds of his children. Seek ye first - and just ask - and remember to repay it if you get the chance - a warm plate of cookies goes a long way. Good luck and God Bless. Hope you have a much better week.

Let us know how it goes.

First of all, welcome home. Second as others have said, no sin here. When this kind of thing has happened to me, I try to make a daily mass during the week. It’s not a substitute for Sunday mass, but it makes me feel better all the same. It’s kind of my way of sending Christ a belated greeting card.

I have so much trouble accepting that missing Mass is a mortal sin… Can someone tell me, where this rule came from? Thanks

Keri, have you thought about calling a taxi?
Last Sunday, I saw a couple at our church taking a taxi.

I pray that you would get your car fixed soon.

She said she doesn’t have any money so how could she pay for a cab? She intended to go to Mass but her car broke down so she didn’t commit a sin.

I didn’t say anything about being sinful for not going to the mass in this case. I only suggest her to go if there is a mean. 😉

I remember her post on Praying request about the car - it costs about $450 to fix the car - it was her car’s timing belt broken. I hope she would have enough money for the cab.

Firstly the commandment ‘honour the Sabbath day and keep it holy’. Ask any devout Jew what that commandment means to them - they’d tell you ya gotta go to synagogue. Mass is our application of that.

Think about it - all of the other things we do - even prayer and charitable work - we gain at least some reward fo ourselves out of it, even if it’s just the warm fuzzy feeling. Mass is the one thing we do chiefly because it pleases God.

Secondly Christ’s grant of authority to the Apostles - ‘whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven’. Certain rules are binding mostly because the Church has the authority to do so.

And after 2,000 years of experience of human nature they usually know what they’re doing. Do you honestly know anyone who doesn’t attend church (barring illness or something) who DOES spend the equivalent extra hour or hour and a half in prayer of a Sunday? It’s simply the best and easiest way to do things to make it obligatory.

Yes I understand that you didn’t say that. Just for the record, I wasn’t saying that you were saying it was sinful. The portion of statement about it not being sinful wasn’t directed toward you but to her. 🙂

Yes, timing belts are expensive indeed. She did say that she didn’t have the money to fix the car and my point was calling a cab is also expensive (or can be) so for her that would have been more money to spend that she needed to fix her car. Anyway, thanks and pax christi.

I’m lucky to have good parents…They put my car repair bill on their credit card…which was over 600 to fix and they told me not to worry about paying for it…They said that they are being parents and thats what they do…They take care of their kids…Even when they are moved out.

I have felt “odd” all week…I really missed not being able to go to Mass. I can tell something is missing this week. I’m so excited for Sunday to come!!!

No sin has been committed. Keri was unable to go. She did not skip Mass.

For several years, I worked on every other Sunday from 7AM to 3:30 PM. My job was in a hospital kitchen and I put myself through college with that job. To my knowledge, no Catholic parish in my area (near Kent State University) had a late Sunday afternoon or Sunday evening Mass.

I could not go on Saturday, either.
I worked a 12:30 to 7PM shift.

In the Pittsburgh area, there are two Masses late in the day on Sunday - a 5:30 PM Mass and a 6PM at St. Paul Cathedral.

This area has a lot of Catholics. Areas with fewer Catholic have fewer Masses and less options.
