Hi Friends,

I need advice, but please be kind, because I feel in a vulnerable state talking about these things. It is about a long-distance relationship and I don’t want to talk in front of my friends, because I will ruin this guy’s reputation.

So, the case is the following - he is a full time student, doing a master’s degree and has financial difficulties. He also has a history of drug abuse, although he is almost clean now. (He admits he has fallen twice last year, when his friend committed suicide.)

He had a long-term relationship with a bit older woman (8 years) and she helped him a lot to get out of this condition. While he had his BA he was almost of all the time living with her, because she has her own apartment, he has converted to faith at some point of time and he says he was living in chastity since then. She also became sick, so he was taking care of her. But for the whole time since the break up, he has been living without her just 2 years, when he was in another city doing a master degree and then all the time coming back to her. Recently since we started writing to each other he again moved back to her for a while, because he could not afford to pay for an apartment. He has now decided to come and visit me in my country for a month, and told her that and she was very upset and threatened him, that he will lose a lot of friends. I asked him and he explained, that most of the friends are not aware that they are just friends with this woman. Also I found out that he has been speaking with her every week and visiting her, and going out with her on social gatherings, it seems to me too much for a friendship after a broken romantic relationship. But on the other hand he has been completely honest with me about her name, that he considers moving to her for financial reasons, etc. Just one more thing is though, that he does not speak with me, when he is there, because he does not want to hurt her feelings.

I also wrote to her on FB, and she has told him about it, but did not reply anything to me.

So, I am wondering, is it possible that he is living with her just as a friend or is that very highly improbable? Should I grant him the benefit of doubt and allow him to come to my country and spend time with him or not? He says he wants to visit and to introduce me to his parents and he is so serious about marriage and even pushing me to do it sooner rather than later.

My brother thinks that he will only wants to have me in order to use me to support him financially, and he would even marry me for that purpose. But I am not quite sure, he seems very dedicated to his study and hard-working person, just at this point of time not very well established.

I don’t know what to do… He only speaks romantic things, and when I am concerned about something spends hours reassuring me, and even if I hurt him or insult him in something he is very patient and only approaches me gently until I realize my mistake. I have no concerns about the way he treats me at all.

I do not know the guy so I could be wrong, but he does sound like a User to me. As in he uses people. Why else would he be living with a ex girlfriend? Because he cannot support himself and he is using her. Whether they are in a relationship or not. As a ex drug addict myself, I can tell you that drug addicts can be very manipulative. One year clean is nothing. I see no harm in letting him visit you but I would put off marrying him until he has been clean for a few years and you KNOW he will not go back to using drugs. Also, yes, there is a chance he is still messing around with this other woman. And ALL guys talk romantic at the beginning. I am a guy and even I know that. It means nothing. Do not let sweet talk cloud your judgement. You obviously think something is not right because you are here seeking advice. I think this man is not ready for a relationship. Just my opinion. Good luck.

Here’s my kindness:
He’s using you.
Hard to hear, yes. But better you find out now. It can get a lot worse.
Long distance relationships are hard enough, but when they involve another woman?
Don’t do this to yourself. People hurt us because we let them.
Years ago I was talking to a guy who was “best friends” with his former girlfriend.
I made a casual remark about it appeared that all the pictures he sent to me were “couples pictures” in which he had edited her frame out. (I know, right?) He became furious, said he was going to throw all my correspondence on the burn pile.
I hindsight, I know he was just horsing around on the internet to see if anyone would bite.
Good luck. I hope he’s genuine, but look at it as if it were your sister in your shoes.
Then decide.

I agree completely. Be very careful. I wonder how he can afford to travel to another country for a month, when he supposedly can’t afford to live on his own.

I think he is living a double life; using her and using you. Listen to your brother. Men know what lurks in the minds of other men. Of course his “friend” was upset. She has invested time, emotion and probably a good deal of money in this man and now it is on to the next gullible person-you. I don’t think there is an easy way to be kind or not hurt your feelings. Better to face the hard facts now before you get in over your head or wind up with a child. Who is paying for his trip and expenses…you or her. Take a hike on this and get off this road. The very fact that you are seeking advice means you have some serious doubts about this guy. Run. Run far and fast. Praying that you make good decisions.

It is highly likely that this guy is not for real. Don’t send him any money, if he asks.

A man with a live in girlfriend, financial issues, and a drug problem loves you and wants to marry you.

A man who lives in another country and has never met you in person wants to marry you and is pushing you to marry “sooner” rather than “later” .

Um, no.

Stop corresponding with this person.

It’s hard to think clearly when you are falling for someone, but here’s what you said:

He relapsed a few times back into drugs in the past year.

He is living with an ex girlfriend.

He is using her.

He hasn’t told his friends that he’s not in a relationship with the other woman.

She obviously thinks they are very much together, despite what he is telling you.

If this was happening to your mother, sister or best friend, what would your advice be to her? One question: He’s coming to your country for a month? That is very expensive. If he has that amount of money either through his own funds or because someone is funding this trip, why is he not using it to get out of her house?

Here’s my advice: Listen to your brother!

I remember your earlier thread, and my advice is the same. End any interaction with this guy and find someone else. This is not normal relationship behavior. You know that or you wouldn’t be questioning it, trying to salvage it somehow. Please, stop communicating with him.

I only have one word of advice for you: RUN. Your brother is right, this guy is an expert at manipulating women and it looks like he is trying for 2 at the same time. You will be much happier giving this loser a pass and finding a nice young man in your own country.

I hope you are not paying his way to visit your country…

I think you need to cut your losses now. Every red flag possible is there. He is financially insecure, living with another woman, has a substance abuse problem etc.

God bless you as your discern the situation.

Mary.

Find a nice Catholic man to marry without the drama. You deserve more than this. So do any future children you have.

Nadq,

I don’t think you need advice. You simply need the courage to end this. I pray you find that courage.

Be patient and pray. God has an amazing partner for you when it’s the right time.

This fellow you’ve described gives me a very bad feeling. I don’t like what I’m hearing. Let him get his life together. In the meantime, you take care of yourself. Listen to your brother.

:hug1:

Thank you, I know he is not ready for a relationship and thanks for the guy, who commented about it. I have been praying for this for months in discernment, but I was only left with deep desolation of mind and I had nightmares all the time (that was even before I knew that this problem persists).

But now he has broken his ties with his ex-girlfriend, he is alone and I feel responsible for that. And what if something happens and he does something stupid like suicide or something of the kind? I am not quite sure how to serve him the news without triggering a terrible reaction.

I have corresponded with him last year and I felt that he is very emotionally unstable, but now I know more about it… I am not even sure he is looking for love or more for somebody to love him and to look after him, because he feels that he needs help.

I did it and it was terrible… I could tell he was very upset, he left his ex girl friend for me and he bought a ticket to my country, which he now needs to cancel… he hang up on me and said he does not want to speak to me ever again. And I still love him and care about him, what a contradiction.

I can’t live with myself now…

Nadq,

I know you feel bad about this, but you shouldn’t. Whatever is going on in his life is not your fault. He does not want to speak to you because he knows you know what he is really all about. I predict he will go back to the other woman and go back to using her again as well.

You will feel better as time goes by. You have a lot going for you and you deserve someone that is not there to use you, but to support you and share with you emotionally as well as physically. Someone that would care for you even if you had nothing to offer him financially.

When you feel lonely, there is God. When you feel weak, there is God. He is there for you in all things, He is all you need. Go to Him and find strength and comfort. May God bless you and guide you.

YOU ARE NOT RESPOSIBLE FOR HIM.
read it again.
YOU ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR HIM.
This is exactly what he wants you to think.
That he’s frail, that he needs you…
Turn it around. Do you need a dysfunctional stranger in your life that treats women badly?
Really?
If you pursue him you will back here in no time lamenting how badly he treats you.
Don’t be the next victim.
Don’t.

… he hang up on me and said he does not want to speak to me ever again.
Sounds like a good outcome. Sorry, but it does!

(except that he will try to speak to you again. I’d count on it.)

Make it a clean break. Don’t speak to him again. Don’t answer any correspondence from him. You’ve made a decision for good reasons and you need to stick to it.
