This morning my girlfriend Texted me and told me that her twin sister had passed out in front of her bed in the middle of the night after saying she didn’t feel good and that her head felt numb and her left eye was blurry. They live with their grandparents and when my gf went to tell them about it their grandma (they call her mom) bassically ignored them and locked them out of her side of the duplex. My gf called the ambulance and they took them to the hospital. The doctors wernt sure why she fainted and sent her home because she didn’t have insurance and she doesn’t have any money to pay for treatment or testing. When they got back my gf exploded at their mom for not caring( this isn’t the first time she has acted like this and she blames her action on her own illness) and how her sister could have been dying and how she was never there for them. Her mom turned it all back on her and made her feel terrible and even said that they are adults and need to take care of themselves. She isn’t willing to help out in any way, she is even making my gf’s sister pay for the ambulance bill. Their mom is bassically rich and sent their entire extended family to Disneyland for five days but is unwilling to help out when her own daughters are sick and could have a potentially life threttening illness. I don’t know what to do. I don’t know how to help them. Her mom obviously doesn’t care about them. I just need some advice and A lOT of prayers.

This is a family matter that you only have one side of. I would stay about as far away from that powder keg as I could. You can support your gf and perhaps even be a sounding board for her but if you do, you risk being dragged into the drama. Personally, I would pray and that is it.

It is very hard to comment on family dynamics when we are all so far removed from the participants. You don’t give the ages of the “girls,” the country they live in–in the US, the doctors would probably have to do testing to rule out a life-threatening cause in the case you describe, regardless of the ability to pay–what these young women have done with their opportunities to support themselves, their past with their parents, and so on. You don’t even say how it is that you know that the mother is rich and how you know she locks them out because she “doesn’t care.” For all we know, if this mother came here and asked what to do and gave us a more complete picture, our answer would be, “Your daughter needs to take care of this herself. She made her bed, and if you don’t let her lie in it, she’s not going to stop with her self-destructive behavior.” You haven’t said what the history of the daughters with their mother’s money and always telling her the truth is.

If you’re asking whether a mother has the right to use her money to send her extended family on nice vacations and then to turn around and refuse to pay the medical bills of her adult children, the answer is yes. Yes, she does. Sometimes, she even *ought to *refuse to jump in and assist her adult children financially. It just depends on the situation.

My advice- stay out of your gf’s relationship with her mother. Unless you were raised with her you have no idea what really went on, you’ve only gotten one side of the story.

Do what you can to encourage your gf and her sister to get jobs and health insurance. Be supportive where you can be.

How old is your girlfriend?

Sorry it’s been so rough! When medical bills are concerned, it can be quite stressful and scary. Then, combined with health and relationship issues, it sounds like it’s just been one thing after the other.

That sounds like there are a lot of things coming together at once. It must be quite overwhelming and scary.

😦

Sorry it’s been so hard on your girlfriend’s sister. How old is she?

Pray and be there for them as much as you can.

Aside from that, they are adults and need to be responsible for themselves. That’s what being an adult means. The situation you describe is worrying because there could be a serious undiagnosed medical issue. Has your GF and her sister thought about applying for state insurance? If they are too poor to cover medical bills they might qualify. If so, the sister would be able to go in for the tests she needs to possibly save her life. Encourage them to do whatever they can to obtain insurance.

There’s really nothing you can do to change the situation. All you can do is be there for her and tell her that YOU care. Best of al, pray for her.

I am so sorry to hear this. I hope your girlfriends sister is feeling better by now. I am not sure how the hospital was able to send her home for lack of insurance, I thought that was against the law.

How old is your girlfriend and her twin? You mentioned their mom, but where is their dad?

I’m sorry I don’t have any great advice, but I am wondering why the hospital sent them home. I know with our local hospital, we took a sick neighbor in who has no insurance and they gave him full treatment, free of charge. So I’m shocked to hear that the hospital your gf took her sister to would not help and simply discharge her if it was serious. I didn’t think they could do that. Even the hospitals in the city (I live in a small town) I know would treat the patients who had no money or insurance.

Maybe they thought she was ok enough to release? If they did that, then I’m supposing there was nothing they could treat your gf’s twin for.

Well, once someone is an adult, able to work and stand on one’s own two feet, he/she is usually expected to begin to have his/her own life, rich relatives or not. Rich relatives are not necessarily required to support everyone.

Is the sister working or studying? If she is a minor, the mother needs to help, but once she is of age, barring some other situation…disability or something, normally it is ideal for the daughters to begin in something…work…school…something, begin to live their own lives, not remain 100% dependent on others for money.

The thread said the sister was penniless. Why is she penniless? When I lived at home, even though I had severe arthritis, I studied. During vacations and some weekends, holidays, I worked and helped out the house to try to earn my keep, save money for books and my studies.

I think the mother wanted to encourage the daughters to begin to be responsible, and since the lesson hasn’t been learned, it’s come to a “tough love” approach, forcing them, not enabling irresponsible behavior.

However, if a mother wants to take an extended family to Disneyland for 5 days, she can, because it’s her money. She is under no obligation to take everyone. If she wants to be generous with her money, that’s her perogative. Perhaps she got along well with the extended family. It doesn’t matter.

Sounds like the twins are acting a bit immature, wanting others to support them through life, but that’s probably not good.

It can sound a little like the daughters feel a sense of entitlement to the mother’s money, without having contributed or earned it. If they are minors, that’s one thing, but if they are of age, the mother might be trying to get them to learn a sense or responsibility, because she will not always be around to bail them out everytime they have a problem.

I have a disability, and even so, I try to depend on my family as little as possible. Perhaps they even have the funds to help me, but that doesn’t matter. Still, I try to be as independent as possible.

I think if, one day, I just absolutely can’t fend for myself, then I might need to ask for help, but I definitely try not to make a habit of it, wear out my welcome.

The US has laws requiring hospitals to treat critical patients regardless of their ability to pay, but not every country has that. So yes, either the hospital believed the patient was not at risk for long-term consequences from the symptoms she had, the exam they did, and the history she was willing to give or else she was not in the US or in a country with free indigent care or else the friend is not telling the OP everything there is to tell.

Also, we need to remember that the “mom” is actually the grandmother, someone who has an illness of her own to cope with. That makes this a bit of a different situation, particularly when letting someone have a place to live in your duplex doesn’t count as “helping out in any way.”

There are a lot of odd details in this story. Who knows what is going on…
