As the title says I’m in search of a new Bible and I could use some help. I’ve been using a Fireside NAB Catholic Companion Edition for years now and it’s seen better days plus the NAB had some weird things going on with the translation of the Old Testament. I love my Bible and they still make the Catholic Companion Edition but with the NABRE translation. I was about to buy one but I’ve heard a lot about other translations and I’m interested in trying a study Bible.

So far the other options I’m looking at are; Didache Bible, Douay-Rheims or Ignatius Study Bible. Do any of you have experience with any of these and which do you feel is the best translation / version?

The RSV-2CE is always good. I must say that it leaves me a bit flat - I don’t know why. Now, the Douay-Rheims is classic, but the language is dated. The Knox is fantastic, even more so if you speak British. Sadly, my personal favorites cannot be had new. Any of the 1941-1969 Douay-Confraternity bibles. Each has the 1941 Confraternity New Testament that is excellent. The OT begins in 1941 editions with pure D-R and additional Confraternity OT translations were introduced as time went on.

Sadly the NAB killed it and a completed Confraternity bible was never published under a single cover. However, eBay has lots of them and they can be found at thrift stores and also at ThriftBooks. Many are in like new or unread condition. Maybe $10-$15 tops.

A sleeper is the little-known Revised English Bible (w/“Apocrypha”) by Oxford-Cambridge. IMO, it is a darned sight better than the NAB or NAB/RE. Also dirt cheap in like new-to-excellent at Amazon, eBay and ThriftBooks. It was done with (name removed by moderator)ut from the Catholic hierarchy in the UK and is actually quite a good daily reader.

Hope this helps.

If you have the money: Get all the ones you mentioned. You can never have too many Bibles.

Thrift Books is where I get a lot of used books, and they do have good prices, so I second that.

I love my Didache Bible. The references to the Catechism of the Catholic Church are awesome!!

Well, some might think so…

What Bibles do you own? Sacred Scripture
OK, you asked. Ya’ see, I have this thing about scripture. OT/NT: Several Douay-Confraternity bibles (1949, 1950, 1952, 1953, 1957, 1960 compact) - some of the absolute best in Catholic bibles. 1953 Belmont Abbey Catholic Action bible (Excellent artwork) 1967 Pope Paul VI Papal Edition Douay-Confraternity 1967 Pope Paul VI Papal Edition Douay Confraternity (Spanish) 1953 Marian Douay-Confraternity 1914 Douay-Rheims w/approbation of James Cardinal Gibbons A leather-bound late 40s - early…

If you’re looking for a study Bible, the Didache Bible is quite nice, though I don’t have much experience with it. A family member of mine owns it. It can be had in either the NABRE or the RSV-CE version, whichever you prefer.

The Ignatius study Bible is only the New Testament right now, I believe. They’ve been working on the Old Testament for quite some time.

The Douay-Rheims is great. You could call it the Catholic equivalent to the KJV. There is a certain mystical quality to it that I haven’t seen in a lot of other translations.

The Knox Bible is a go-to favorite of mine. It’s a more dynamic translation but is very poetic. Baronius Press did a good job getting it back into print. And the Confraternity Bible is great too. It’s not in print, but older editions in good shape can be had on the cheap.

Money is a little tight but I’d love to get all of them if I can. I’ve always liked having multiple translations around. I’ll check out Thrift Books and see if I can find them them on there for a better price.

Thanks for the suggestions. I’ll look into the Knox Bible.

@po18guy That does help. I’ll look into all of your suggestions.
