hey everyone

My dad was doing something outside, that I.did not like and in anger I told my mom that he is gay, purely out of anger, is this a mortal sinn? I’m so scared it is please help, every reply helps!

Depends on if you had full knowledge and consent of the will. Either way, take it to confession.

That’s my two cents.

Compendium issued by Pope Benedict XVI
  1. When does one commit a mortal sin?
1855-1861
1874

One commits a mortal sin when there are simultaneously present: grave matter, full knowledge, and deliberate consent. This sin destroys charity in us, deprives us of sanctifying grace, and, if unrepented, leads us to the eternal death of hell. It can be forgiven in the ordinary way by means of the sacraments of Baptism and of Penance or Reconciliation.
  1. When does one commit a venial sin?
1862-1864
1875

One commits a venial sin, which is essentially different from a mortal sin, when the matter involved is less serious or, even if it is grave, when full knowledge or complete consent are absent. Venial sin does not break the covenant with God but it weakens charity and manifests a disordered affection for created goods. It impedes the progress of a soul in the exercise of the virtues and in the practice of moral good. It merits temporal punishment which purifies.

It was childish, petulant and disrespectful certainly.

Ask your priest.

Maybe you need to set up regular confessions with your parish priest and talk to him about your scrupulosity.

How can you get an answer to whether something is a mortal sin on a website.

Mymammary you don’t know us, we don’t know you, we might not be who we say we are… etc, etc.

16! You should not be asking such questions on an adult forum. The answers may not be suitable at all for someone your age or with your scrupulous nature.

You need the guidance of safe adults who can relate to you one-on-one in your life, and who know of and communicate with each other.

Eg., all of these - parent, school counsellor, parish priest and maybe others.

I personally feel in prudence, and out of care for what is best for you, that I should not give any answers to any of your questions in future.

Find help from real people who can help.

I will pray that you receive appropriate guidance and help.:gopray:

Yes, i am scrupulous, and yes, i do have a regular confessor, we have weekly confession set up, and yes he knows my situation. If i were to ask, he would cut me off as he would not want to indulge my scruples. However my eternal soul matters very much to me, and that is why i ask. It might be an adult forum, but i care about my Faith. All i wanted was whether or not this incident was a mortal sin??? I dont know, and if i were to ask, he wouldnt tell me, because these kind of questions would tend to indulge my scruples. But im trying not too!

Plus, now this will sound very childish, but what if i stay up all night praying? as i have the fear of dying and going to hell

The fact that you’re wondering whether it was means it wasn’t. You have to know it’s a grave sin and then freely do it while fully aware of that fact for it to be mortal.

I’m scrupulous too–it can feel like agony. Did you say it suddenly in anger without thinking (it slipped out) or did the thought come to you, you knew it would be terribly wrong to say, and you went ahead and CHOSE to say it anyway? If you said it suddenly without thinking, it is very likely a venial sin. If you make an act of contrition and tell God you’re sorry and ask Him to help you do better next time, then you will be restored to a state of Grace (provided you are not in a state of Grace). God knows that you go to Confession weekly, so He knows that you fully intend to go at the appointed time. If you are scrupulous and you are doubting whether or not you’ve mortally sinned, more than likely you HAVEN’T. Imagine if you killed someone. Would you be asking if that was a mortal sin? Or would you KNOW you’d committed mortal sin? I know it’s hard–I’ve felt the very same way you do now many times. But make an act of contrition, do something nice for your dad, and go to Confession as you normally would each week and you will be fine. And no, you don’t need to stay up all night praying. But praying ONE rosary or Divine Mercy Chaplet may help you feel God’s love for you.

Learn from that.

But you are indulging your scruples by taking this question to an internet forum instead of your priest.

It was a dumb comment, not a mortal sin.

A scrupulous person should ALWAYS follow his confessor’s instruction.

Any time, you think you have committed a mortal sin, pray a sincere act of contrition. And go to confession when you can.

BUT also remember you can not “accidentally” commit a mortal sin… You MUST know** in advance** that it is a mortal sin, AND it is in actuality a real serious sin (not just that you think it was) and then you deliberately do it anyway.

Doing something on the spur of the moment like that, is rarely a mortal sin. I hope you recanted your lie and apologized as soon as you could.

Get in the habit of praying an act of contrition before you go to bed every evening and you will never have to worrry about going to Hell.

Remember St John Vianny says “folks who always pray will surely go to Heaven, folks who never pray will most surely go to Hell”

If it was a lie, you committed the sin of slander.
If you did so in the heat of the moment, without planning to do it,
it was a venial and not a mortal sin, because it wasn’t cold and willful
(( i.e. by that I mean thought-about and committed with full consent of
the will intending to slander him )).

If it IS true, then it was not the sin of Slander (for slander/libel is bearing FALSE witness
against someone), but it might be the sin (still venial if in the heat of the moment)
of Detraction, especially Unnecessary Detraction.
If you found out that your dad has same-sex attraction but is NOT committing gay
sex acts, then he is not cheating on your mother, nor sinning at all with his body,
and it was not necessary to reveal that conflict within his personality to your mom.

But if he IS cheating on her? That’s another matter.
Some would say (not without reason) that it would be cruel, both to him
AND to your mom, to reveal the cheating to her. That’s a valid viewpoint.
BUT.
There are other possbilities to consider as well, if you know that he is, in fact,
practicing gay sex. Should you tell your mom? Difficult to answer.
A woman who is being cheated on by her husband, with another woman,
may be infuriated by it, but she can at least COMPETE with “the other woman” to win back her husband’s loyalty because, after all, it is another WOMAN who has gained
his affections.
But if he is cheating on her with a MAN, how can she “compete” with THAT??
Many women have realized this, to their shock and heartbreak, about their husbands,
because in such a situation, he doesn’t want a woman, whether “another woman” or even in fact, possibly your mom. He wants a MAN, and a woman cannot compete with another man to win back your dad’s affections. That would be very difficult for a woman to deal with.

Also, whether with a woman or with a man, if your dad is cheating on your mom,
you are faced with having to consider the possibility, the very REAL possibility,
that he may be having “unprotected” extramarital sex, and therefore could bring home,
and infect your mother with, a very dangerous sexually transmitted disease, such as syphillis, the big G, chlamydia, or even, god forbid, AIDS/HIV.
Your innocent mother definitely does not deserve to be made sick by her cheatin’ hubby,
and in that case, to reveal it to your mom would not even be a VENIAL sin of detraction, it would, in fact, be an act of Charity towards her.

There are many factors to consider here.
But if you lied about your dad in anger, it was still a venial sin.
But it will become a Mortal Sin if you do NOT reveal to your mom that
you slandered your dad and that your claim was false and made in the heat of anger.
Moms arent’ dummies. They’ve been around the block.
They know that kids get furious with their dads sometimes and say god-awful things about them that they later regret. If you lied, just tell her. And if your dad knows you lied, that really hurt his feelings whether he shows it or not, so apologize to him. If he DOESN’T know that you lied about him, then don’t tell him, because that would STILL hurt, and why subject him to that unnecessarily??
In any case, confess to God, and when you go to confession next time,
even though it was a venial sin, confess it anyway. It isn’t strictly necessary to do so,
but you gain Grace against such future deeds by confessing even the venial sin. In other words, it’s GOOD for YOU , to do so. Peace and love to you !!

I don’t see anyone here who has said it - but it starts with an apology to your father and looking at why you said this - what were you angry about?

Its not a matter of being a sin but more importantly why you said it and resolving the anger issue with your father.

You can go to confession next opportunity - but you need to examine the reason for the anger and issue a true apology to your parents.

I wouldn’t call it a mortal sin but an anger outburst of a teenager who needs to apologize for their behavior towards their parents.

Did you use the term to mean he is stupid, as in, “Dad is just so GAY!” You know that young people your age use that term in all sorts of ways that have nothing to do with being a homosexual.

Or did you really pretend to mean that your dad is a homosexual?

What was your mother’s response to your statement?

This will make a difference in how I advise you.
