I’m new to the forums (obviously) and I figure since I put my faith as LDS that this is where I would go to ask some questions.

So I would like to learn and better understand the Catholic Church and what it teaches and why. I don’t really have any knowledge of it other then my Grandparents are Catholic.

I was born into the LDS faith (parents converted) and even served a mission to Ireland. Which is where I became more attracted to the Catholic Church and espeically enjoyed it because thats where my ancestors hail from. But recently, and i mean very recently, i’ve had an urge and quite frankly a sense of excitement when thinking about learning about the Catholic Church.

So, I would like to learn, not all at once of course, but little by little. Just like in the bible where it states you can’t eat meat without first learning to drink milk (or something along those lines). Wheres a good place to start and what are some basics that I would need to learn first. Thanks for the help and hopefully again, i’m starting this thread in the right forum. (fingers crossed)

p.s. on a side note, I see people with quotes and pictures next to their names or at the buttom of their comments. How do you do that?

Welcome Friend!

This seems to be a good place to start:

whatiscatholic.com/

Here are the most basic beliefs:

vatican.va/archive/ccc_css/archive/catechism/credo.htm

This is a great place to ask questions!

And…the signatures and things? They appear after being here a while & posting a certain amount.

God bless you+
Thank you for some of the info! I already have a question though after reading the Apostle’s Creed. It states that Jesus descended to Hell. I actually just got done watching the Passion of the Christ, and it reminded me that when Christ gave up His Spirit he said, “into thy hands I command my spirit”. So why would Jesus descend to Hell and not go straight to Heaven?

Thanks again for the help in getting me started! and for answering my questions about the signatures and things!

That clears it up, thank you.

It looks like I have a lot to read and learn so i’ll get on it right away! thanks again for your help!

God Bless!

good luck…I made that journey 11 years ago
Thank you! What were you before?

Also quick question about prayer, how should i start praying to receive answers? should I just do the Lord’s prayer or does praying from the heart work too?

Praying from the heart is wonderful!

Just remember, prayers always get answered, but not always at a time or in a way we are expecting!

The Lords prayer should also of course, and with sincerity, be regularly prayed.

I don’t know why this has really made my happy and excited for some reason. This might be God’s way of communicating to me or guiding my steps but as of right now, I feel more at home in the Catholic Church than I do in the LDS church. Ive never been to a Catholic Church as an investigator or know that much about it, but I like this feeling and want it to stay. I think i’m heading in the right direction.

Thank you again for your help and support!

I was nothing right before. Before I was nothing, I was LDS

Here are some basics to start with:

star.ucl.ac.uk/~vgg/rc/aplgtc/hahn/m1/Mod1.html

This discusses the foundations and splendors of the church…and the 7 sacraments.

Praying from the heart is always good. Also, when words fail you, there are a lot of prayers that you can use already written. Most were written by Saints, etc. You can usually find a prayer for almost any situation. Just google Catholic Prayers…and you can even pray pre-written prayers from the heart…

The book “Catholicism for Dummies” is the perfect place to start. Don’t be put off by the title. You want a place that gives you a highly readable overview without getting bogged down in jargon and minutiae, right? There you go.

It’s an introduction, not a Summa, so you won’t be phd ready when you finish. But you won’t feel like you’re lost in the woods anymore either.

(P.S. Don’t buy the “Idiot’s Guide to Catholicism” by mistake. Those guys should be cited for false advertising! That book is somewhere between poorly written and deceptive.)

Enjoy your reading and feel free to post questions!

Quick question about reason’s Catholics do what they do.
  1. A rosary, where did it come from? why is it used? how should it be used?
  2. To Cross oneself. Why do you do it? When do you do it?
  3. Intercession of Saints and Mary. Where did this doctrine come from and Whats the benefit of doing that instead of praying directly to God?
Thanks.

Welcome and God Bless you on your journey.

Pray until it hurts, then pray for the hurting to stop and start over 🙂

2. The sign of the cross is closely tied to baptism. Jesus told the apostles, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Mt 28:19).

The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us that when Catholics are baptized “the sign of the cross, on the threshold of the celebration, marks with the imprint of Christ the one who is going to belong to him and signifies the grace of the Redemption Christ won for us by his cross” (CCC 1235).

Thereafter, each time we make the sign of the cross we remember that we belong to Christ.

The Christian begins his day, his prayers, and his activities with the sign of the cross: “In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.” The baptized person dedicates the day to the glory of God and calls on the Savior’s grace which lets him act in the Spirit as a child of the Father. The sign of the cross strengthens us in temptations and difficulties. (CCC 2157)

You can make the sign of the cross any time you like, but it is most common before and after prayers, when genuflecting, entering and exiting a church and at the Gospel reading at Mass (the sign being made on the forehead, lips and heart).

The Rosary was given to St Dominic. Some aspects of the rosary pre-dated him.
Here is a full explanation of the Rosary:

Crossing ourself:
"The Sign of the Cross is a profession of faith in God as he revealed himself. It serves as an abbreviated form of the Apostles’ Creed. Touching our forehead, breast and shoulders, we declare our belief in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We are announcing our faith in what God has done — the creation of all things, the redemption of humanity from sin and death, and the establishment of the Church, which offers new life to all. When we sign ourselves we are making ourselves aware of God’s presence and opening ourselves to his action in our lives. That would be enough, wouldn’t it? But there is much, much more. "
