I think gay marriage should be legal. Is that wrong?

Do I believe that gay marriage is okay? No. But why? Because it goes against my religious beliefs. However, I don’t think it’s fair to say, “This goes against MY religion, therefore, nobody can practice it.” And this isn’t like abortion. Abortion is murder, which is why it should be illegal. But gay marriage is a sexual sin, where both people are choosing to partake. I mean, premarital sex is also a sexual sin, and is just as bad as homosexuality. But nobody protests against that, or wants to ban that. Almost everybody will agree that premarital sex should not be illegal. So why should gay marriage be?

Gay sex is not illegal, nor is anyone trying to make it illegal, despite the fact that it is morally wrong (as is, of course, any sex outside of marriage).

But there is a huge difference between the state 1) choosing not to criminalize a certain type of behavior and 2) promoting/condoning it by calling it marriage.

I’m sure that there have been numerous threads on this issue, if you run a search. 🙂

Identity theft is not murder, yet it is illegal. Someone can’t just suddenly start calling himself “Bill Gates” and start using the things that belong to Bill Gates unless that person is indeed him. So called “gay marriage” is a form of identity theft. Marriage has a meaning and a purpose in this culture and it relates to a special relationship between a man and a woman.

You don’t need to argue from the Catholic POV against gay marriage. There is no major religion or secular society that approved of gay marriage until very recently. And the legal aspects pertaining to marriage in societies where it is legal tend to be so striped down that the nobody would recognize it as a marriage. Does a legal contract that can be eliminated at will, that is gender neutral, that require no sex, that requires not children or attempt a children, sound like any traditional marriage definition?

Another thread on redefining marriage!

Why are these continually in the family forum instead of the forums typically used to discuss political issues?

One could rightly argue that ‘thou shalt not murder’ is a religious belief. What do we say to someone who says it’s not against their religion to murder?

The fact is, stable families, in which the next generation is raised, are the foundation of a stable society. As marriages go, so goes society. As marriage is torn down and becomes meaningless, society degenerates further.

There just might be a reason why no society, ever, anywhere, in any culture, in any era, EVER, has regarded marriage as anything other than people of the opposite sex. Maybe, just maybe, when that many people, throughout time, history, cultures, and the globe, are universally in agreement about something–perhaps we would be wise to stop and consider why, rather than yelling bumper sticker slogans about ‘love.’

Our modern arrogance, that we know better than any culture or people who ever lived, as Catholics who feel we know better than 2,000 years of great saints and great minds in the Catholic church–this arrogance will be our undoing.

Sorry,but bad comparison and weak:

I mean, premarital sex is also a sexual sin, and is just as bad as homosexuality

Sex before marriage is one thing and homosexuality another. And the church is against sex before marriage. Clumping them together is a mere cop-out!

👍

Marriage is a Sacrament. There is no such thing as gay “marriage”. It is a civil union recognized only by the state in the context that TheWarriorMonk described.

God help us the day that the state attempts to force the Church to perform these sinful unions.

Exactly! That is what the gay community has done, re-define marriage to cater to them for their own selish needs…period!

I’m starting to wonder if these threads aren’t started for a purpose.

And they certainly don’t belong is this section.

I think of it in terms of divorce. Homosexual people basically want the right to divorce, just like heterosexual people.

If 50% of heterosexual marriages end in divorce, then apparently, marriage is the problem. A lot of people have no faith in marriage, and say “everybody cheats” and people are “fools” if they get married. It should be no different for homosexual people.

You seem to have a wrong understanding of moral truth. Relativism is a heresy.

SSM is not wrong simply because the Church says it is. It is objectively wrong, for all people. It is a serious wrong to inflict upon society and children. SSA was rightly classified as a mental illness by the APA until recently, when political correctness moved them away from this truth.
And this isn’t like abortion.
You are quite mistaken. It is very much like abortion or any other serious moral wrong. It impacts society. It is wrong in-and-of itself. It should be illegal not only because of its wrongness but because of it’s impact on society and children. The French can see this so clearly, they clearly understand the term “matrimony”-- the making of a mother-- and the purpose marriage serves in civil society.
But gay marriage is a sexual sin, where both people are choosing to partake.
It’s moral wrongness is part of the equation. Legality in civil society should in fact reflect the objective truth of natural law. But more importantly, civil law seeks to preserve the social order. Laws that favor marriage are in place to encourage marriage because they produce children, which is a benefit to society that is to be encouraged. Rome found themselves in a similar position in the late empire-- people were not having babies. The society was imploding. They enacted legilsation to encourage marriage and children, and penalize singleness. Gay marriage is of NO benefit to society. To encourage it is to give financial and social benefit to something that produces no benefit in return. It is illogical.
I mean, premarital sex is also a sexual sin, and is just as bad as homosexuality. But nobody protests against that, or wants to ban that.
Oh, really? No one?
Almost everybody will agree that premarital sex should not be illegal.
I think you are unaware of the vast majority of Western history.
So why should gay marriage be?
Because it is a detriment to society and to children.

I would love to know how gay marriage is a detriment to society and to children.
  1. A gay person getting married has NO impact on your marriage, your family, or your life. If you are against gay marriage, don’t marry a gay person!
  2. I would love to know how gay marriage is a detriment to children. How is ANY committed relationship where two people want to love a child a detriment to that child? Answer: it’s not.
Two intellectually disabled individuals who are competent enough to consent can marry and reproduce, which certainly would be a detriment to a child, and yet two people of sound mind and body are somehow less capable of raising a child?

The state is not forcing churches to marry ANYONE. Religion should have no place in affording legal protection to a committed couple- gay or straight.

And this whole argument of “we must make straight people get married and have sex to keep our population up” argument is complete bollocks. There have been and always will be infertile couples, or couples who are child-free by choice.

There are 143 million orphans in the world. Until they all have a home there’s no reason that we need to be worried about humans going extinct.

Only Marriage in the Church is a sacrament…any other “marriage” is a civil issue. I don’t care how the state wants to legislate what they call marriage, as long as they don’t impose state views on the Church; nor should the Church impose on the state…solution in my mind? If a couple enters into the Holy Order of Matrimony, that should be called marriage, and all others, gay or straight alike, who make a commitment outside the Sacrament should have that relationship called what it is: civil union.

Part of what laws do, or should do, would be to attempt to promote what is benefiical, healthy, and good for society.

Laws often try to discourage what will hurt its people, over the long run.

You already know what God thinks about this. So, let’s put all that aside, and I’ll address this from a purely secular perspective.

Have you ever actually looked at some statistics on homosexuality? If not, I’d invite you to do that before condoning this.

Did you realize the murder rate of homosexuals is 100 times that of the normal population?
The suicide rate is 25 times higher.

People say condomns are great, but they have about a 15% failure rate, and what about AIDS? Yes, I know that heterosexuals can also get AIDS; but homosexuality puts a person into a high risk category, for example, with even blood donation. It’s similar to someone who uses IV drugs.

The life span of homosexuals is also significantly shorter.

Statistics on their relationships shows that promiscuity with it goes hand in hand. Yes, I know heterosexuals can also be promiscuous. However, what I’m saying is that the statistics show that homosexual promiscuity has been demonstrated to be much greater.

I’ve seen stats that 28% of homosexuals have had sex with more than 1,000 partners, that 79% of their partners were strangers.

Some thing by promoting gay “marriage”, it will help with these stats, but that doesn’t seem to be the case, either. Some seem to do this strictly for the benefits, be it health insurance, etc., not that they have any intention of being faithful.

It’s been said when gays marry, it mainly means they won’t bring their other partners to the house.

Again, religion aside, it’s a government’s obligation to promote what’s in society’s best interest. When gay laws come in, it often kills Christian businesses and organizations, and those of people of faith. Often the work these people of faith does is great…their service to society. Yet, many gays resent anyone disagreeing and will stop at nothing to shut them down, put them in prison, make sure they are fined.

So, we must not back gay marriage, because after gay marriage, what next? Gay adoption? Then what?

Christians have had all they can do to defend themselves, often losing in court, having even the most basic religious protections denied.

Gays can be some of the most intolerant people, will retaliate against people of faith, given the opportunity, unfortunately.

There are many ramifications, and these are just a few reasons why we must not accept gay “marriage”.

Is it wrong to think gay marriage should be legal? If you’re a Catholic, it is.
