I believe I have crossed the line Into sin unto death. It all makes sense now. Im unable to repent. Envy, pride, premarital sex and sloth have consumed me. These sins are so ingrained in me now. I dont think theres any hope left for me. I have been sucked into the black hole of the ego. I truly know what despair feels like. Id it my fault that I turned out this way though? Its not my fault I was raised by crazy parents who were never able to teach me love. I know there’s no hope for me now because even st john said theres no point in praying for people like me. Esau sought repentence with tears ( as did I) yet he was denied. I don’t even know why im coming here. I dont suppose any of you could offer me any consolation? Im ina pit of despair atm

Im simply unable to feel sorry for some of my sins. In fact the there are some im even glad I committed. No matter how hard I try I cannot regret some of them. Id only be PRETENDING to be sorry and just decieving myself.

You don’t have to ‘feel’ sorry for your sins. You just need to acknowledge the sin to God. Say you know it offends God even though you feel nothing, but ask pardon.

It could seem you are feeling depressed.
You know that God’s mercy is there for you until the very instant that your soul leaves your body. You already know this.
I could quote scripture and the kind words of saints. You know about that.
So what can I do to help.
I simply settled for a picture of an Australian wallaby mother offering a pigeon some of her food from the brown paper bag someone had given her…

Double clicking on the photo enlarges and enables a clearer view of this kind behavior. Wallabies and kangaroos hold the bags in their hands and nibble delicately from the bag, but in this picture, her compassion for the lowly pigeon is manifest.
There is love, and there is hope in this world.

Thanks for the picture. Its nice but I dont think you understand. For example I just cant let go of my envy or my ego. Every time I try the flames of envy and resentment rise up again. I cant help comparing myself to others. Im sorry I didn’t mean to spam the spirituality section btw

I may understand better that you think.
It’s hard to let go of the resentments and hurts, and even the things we envy.
Many of us if not all, have things we battle with in our natures and in our lives.
And often we have to deal with the same resentments and unforgiveness time and time again.

We might not talk about it except to the priest in Confession, but to some extent, greater of lesser, we all have to battle with our ego, or sense of injustice etc.
We might never overcome these difficulties for long, but the main thing is to keep trying.
The success is not always in succeeding, but in continuing to try.
Getting up out of the mud and trying again. God sees this. He knows we want to be the person we feel we should be. He knows how hard that is for you, me, and lots of us.

As usual, a wise post. Get back on the horse every day. Don’t rely on emotion, use your will and if you fall, fall before the Lord. My poor lost prayers are with you in your despair.

If this is okay to add my thoughts here for you, feel free to ignore what you wish…

I shall say a prayer for the sanctification of your soul, for peace in your heart, mind and body. I know your battle - you CAN rid yourself of these sins, searching for the grace within and prayers, I’m sure I’m not saying anything you don’t already know. It’s a daily fight to stay close to God.

I think it was St Anthony of the desert who said: ‘Every day I say to myself, today I will begin.’

You could try reading some of the desert fathers and mothers sayings? I find them to be straight to the point and very helpful, there are books on Amazon. Also if you’re able to order online from the CTS website, they do some great little booklets which are quite cheap, prayers during suffering, etc. Some of these might also help. I sometimes find the Bible very ‘heavy’ I can get depressed when reading chapter after chapter about what not to do and what to do, it can feel overwhelming to me. You could try to read a psalm, or a verse of the proverbs or wisdom say, with a passage from Christ in the Gospels - keep it small, if you struggle with the Scriptures. Maybe pick a few words from Christ which you find comforting and repeat them during the day, use them as a way to calm your mind when you start to despair?

And of course there are Priests, if you can find someone you feel at ease with to talk to…

I hope I don’t come across as bossy, that’s really not my aim, I recognise a lot of what you say, and trying to reach out to you. These are just some ideas I would use myself. God Bless and keep fighting. I believe God and St Michael have you covered if you can try a small step towards Him to begin with.

I believe that you are repentant, because if you weren’t, why would you be here, struggling and lamenting over your situation? Why aren’t you out in the world, being carried absolutely wherever your whims take you? Why - like what happens with unrepentant people - have you not become blinded to the fact that you’re even sinful at all? Your heart might not be a blazing fire like you want it to be, but I do think there’s a fire in there that is smoldering and smoking; you just need to labor to get it going.

If a person looks at an elephant before them, and is told to eat the elephant, they might become hopeless, because how could they possibly do such a thing? But, if they obey, and they start doing it, they will succeed. How? They just take it one bite at a time. Remember that conversion is not a one-time experience. It is our lifelong quest.

Don’t sit in your room attempting to magically manufacture warm, fuzzy emotions. That is not what makes a strong Christian. Sit down and organize some tangible goals, and then do them. If you are catechized in the faith, then you will know what pleases God and what doesn’t please God. Work at it and be patient with yourself. You will experience joy and a sense of accomplishment, and your love will increase, but that isn’t something that is just going to pop its head out on its own. Everyday, pray. If you’re not in the mood to pray, or if you’re consumed with a sense of unworthiness to pray at all, then in those times especially, pray.

Show confidence in your ability to be liberated from sin. Not because of who you are, but because of who God is.

Whenever someone comes to this forum with this kind of thread I feel a great loss for words and want so much to have a chance to sit down and have a real conversation. What you have described reminds me of myself over the years and my personal experience would suggest that I give you sincere encouragement that these feelings will go away and be replaced by positive, faith filled ones. Hopefully having the chance to vent even helps, it usually does for me. But, the greatest support I have is when I turn myself over to God and realize He has been waiting for me to do just that. Then these type of feelings leave me and are replaced with the loving support of Our Father. I can’t sit and listen and share with you, like I would like to do, but I promise to pray for you.

Memorare

REMEMBER, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

Praying to the Holy Spirit to give you guidance, direction, strength & fortitude in your time of need.

now I see you on the threshold of an even more dangerous sin “DESPAIR”.
you can’t become a saint on earth but you can lay the foundation.
a hermit once told me “do not repent once and for all; repent everyday!”

OP,

Jesus said that if you sinned seven times a day and asked forgiveness seven times, he would forgive you. For now try your best to work on your sins, but always be ready to ask forgiveness and do penance if you slip up. Everyone slips up, we are only humans.

Of course there is hope! It wouldn’t be called hope if there wasn’t!

Trust me on this: the devil is feeding you lies in the form of very lofty intellectual ideas and making you think they’re your own ideas. It isn’t your “ego” that’s the problem, it’s your gullibility!

Take a step back for a second and look at yourself: you clearly do repent. You’re saying you want to repent but can’t? No such thing!

You’re misquoting the Bible. Esau did not regret his action because he was sorry he sinned, he regretted it because he was sorry that he was being punished, and only wanted his punishment taken away!

You’re not really despairing, don’t worry! You’re just confused and misled by the devil. Pray to be more simple, and to think more simply. Then you’ll see that you already are repenting, and God is already very pleased with you for wanting to stop offending Him 🙂

I’ll pray for you, but I’m not worried for you. You obviously do repent, you’re just a bit confused. Once you calm down a bit, and pray for clarify of sight and mind, you’ll see that you’re on a pretty good path right now, and your cup will overflow with hope, and faith and love!

I would say that trying is important. Some of what sin is depends on consent. If you have been conditioned in a certain way and cannot control certain things right now, it does not mean this cannot change nor is it any reason to lose hope. I don’t think that you are responsible for having these feelings, but it’s what you do with them.

I would suggest meeting with a priest and communicating these concerns to him.

You recognise your pitifulness. That’s something many people will not admit - that they are broken, and need to be fixed. I commend you.

On the bright side, at least you have never tangled with drugs, alcohol, smoking, violence, the demonic, or any number of other vices. Imagine how much harder it would be to repent with all that on your soul.

But what do you think repentance is? A feeling? Nonsense! Repentance is no more a feeling than love! Do you think you can love? To love is to do the good to God, and to one’s neighbour, nothing else. So repentance is only the turning away from sin.

Tell me this: is the victim of a rape guilty of rape? Never! Sin - especially tough sins like pride and sexual sins - is like a riptide at a beach. A riptide pushes you away from the shore. So sin pushes us away from goodness, and God. And perhaps like a riptide, you’re fighting your sins the wrong way. If one swims directly into a riptide, the riptide will just keep pushing them, and they’ll drown.

You seem to be drowning in despair. Perhaps you need a spiritual “lifeguard” - a spiritual director. Someone who knows how to get you out of life’s riptides. Also note that fighting sin is a lifelong battle - as any recovering alcoholic will tell you! - but it’s well worth the fight!

I…Esau sought repentance with tears ( as did I) yet he was denied. …
That’s old testament, dear!!

Do you read the New Testament? That’s “The Good News”- have you heard that phrase before? Maybe you haven’t. ??

The way I read the whole Esau story was similar to how I read the Simon (of simony) story: both men were only sorry for the punishment they received, not sorry for what they actually did wrong, with no intention or desire of actually changing.

This is only because you don’t see what those sins you did have done. You simply lack understanding at this point. You don’t see the ripple effect and the destruction your sin has caused… Now, I don’t say that to make you feel worse, but to interest you to the occasion of learning why what God says is sin and trying to find out what those sins actually destroy. When you understand that, you will have real sorrow, and real repentance will follow- and you will be at peace… and have joy that God saved you from darkness of not understanding. …

…Think about the difficulties and struggles Helen Keller had, being both deaf and blind. ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helen_Keller) It is the same way for many who have not heard the Gospels taught to them before, or even understood them correctly. Jesus talks a lot about ‘the blind’ in the Gospels. Go take a look!

So, why not ask God for understanding? It may be that you will find in some of your sins God doesn’t hold you as responsible for it as you think He might… again, its a matter of lacking understanding or knowledge. That happened to me on a few things when coming to know Christ… It turns out according to His Word, that on some things that I did that were sin, I was off the hook in responsibility because it was mostly someone else’s failure or wrong doing and I could see that God didn’t hold me fully responsible, but someone else. Now, it was still sin, mind you, but it felt good to know that I wasn’t fully responsible for it… and I loved God because He saw my pain and my dilemma and He didn’t beat on me the way others were about it, but simply gave me an education in love and asked me to not do it again. And because I knew better, because I understood, I did better…because of that love, but ONLY because of Him. This did NOT come from me or any other, though there were most certainly Christians who were helpers. (It is good to remember Christians are not perfect, only Jesus is! So don’t expect perfection from people…ever!)

Scripture says, “the wages of sin is death”. Death. Decay, rotting, destruction, loss. ** Sin is the cause of it. ** Have you ever watched a beloved pet or family member or loved one die? Remember how awful it is to see it? That is what sin does… it takes something good and destroys it, or slowly decays it, bit by bit . Death was not God’s idea, but it was a consequence of the original sin. (One can’t say He didn’t warn Adam and Eve!) In fact God hates death… He hates divorce. He hates sin. He doesn’t even take pleasure in the death of evil people. Sin brings about so much hurt… for everyone. So many complications- sometimes its consequences reaches the innocent! That is a true horror… and that is why its a horror to see Christ on the cross… Pure innocence, pure goodness, pure hope, pure purity, pure love, kindness, justice, etc… murdered. But God cannot be destroyed. Alleluia! Thanks be to God for his works and His mercy!

You may not know it but whatever sin you are glad you committed probably hurt you badly- in fact, your discomfort that you write about now might be the result of that sin. Do you like being discomforted? Do you like dying instead of living? If not, seek and grab onto the only One Who has said, ““I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me…”
