I want to love Mary but I don’t feel it. Anybody else have that problem?

Also, if you want a more “palpable” charism, I’d look into praying the Franciscans Saints or St Therese of Lisieux… They’re awesome… 🙂

The wedding feast at Cana days it ALL to me. I just feel like I have trouble relating to Mary. But I honor Her. I say the Rosary every day I can.

As I have been thinking about your question, I remember a time when someone asked me something about Mary and the rosary…

I kept feeling like you were saying, like you don’t feel it, but - in fact - when I responded to the person’s question, I went on and on and on and on and on about her… Apparently, her soul really does magnify the Lord, as I could keep going on about her here…

It is as if perhaps she is so often unseen because she is so obvious… Try reading the Gospel of Luke or John… Think about Advent and Christmas time coming up… There’s many, many different types of Rosaries… Read Saint Louis DeMontfort’s True Devotion to Mary or any of his other works… There’s a million “Our Lady of the fill in the blank” churches everywhere… and on and on…

That fact is - She’s everywhere… Again, She is THAT sublime… The best “recommendation” I can think to make would be simply not to get too focused on something that might blind you to the big picture… Her soul magnifies the Lord, so she’s probably showing you something so much bigger and grander than you realize… Sometimes you just need to step back to try to put it in perspective…

I have read Saint Louis DeMontfort’s True Devotion to Mary. One of the points he makes is that devotion to Mary is the quickest way to salvation.

Oh, and one last thing…

Remember that she magnifies the Lord by rejoicing in God, whom she sees (through faith) as her Saviour…

The part about rejoicing (especially by being a servant to God) is probably just about as important as her sadness at the cross…

There’s really so much to love about her… She shows us all aspects of what our faith is like…

The feelings of an innocent child for their Mother, is beautiful. Even loving Abba, Jesus & the Holy Spirit is so much sweeter, when innocent. At 70 yo., I’ve seen things, know of things, that took away my innocence. I don’t bubble anymore.
You know, you love Mary, as I do. I have trouble w the Rosary. When I was in HS, I had detention, once. The Sister gave us the Rosary to say. HMMM Subconsciously, I’m not fond of the Rosary. I can FEEL more loving saying the Memorare.
Sometimes, it concerns me, if we’re giving too much attention to Mary. GOD is a jealous God. Mary is special & He loves her. But, a proper balance is needed.
In YT, there are NDE. One Spanish woman, a fair Catholic, died & saw Jesus. Her journey was going to take her to hell. Her Catholicism wasn’t saving her, nor would it. Jesus is our Savior. But, Jesus mentioned her relationship w Mary was more than He wanted.
NOW, are NDE real? I’m a cautious believer. I worked ICU/CCU for 44 yrs. I was there when pt’s died. Interesting things happened. We must balance scripture & church teachings w what we see.,.
Our priest said, when I say the Rosary, the Holy Spirit is putting His love in the words.
Love God w our whole heart, our whole soul & our whole mind & strength. Love our neighbors as we are to love ourselves.
She answered YES, to Gabriel. She could not have known the intensity of her journey at 13 yo…We owe her fidelity& love, for that act alone.

MARY, CONCEIVED WITHOUT SIN, , PRAY FOR US, WHO HAVE RECOURSE TO THEE.

Don’t go chasing after a particular feeling, especially if you’re hoping for mushy-gushy and dripping with sentiment.

You want to get closer to her, then you talk to her every day. and read everything about her you can. And speak well of her.
Bam. There your devotion.

Many times when God is calling us to a greater holiness He will remove all of the consolations that we have been receiving in order that we may love Him for who He is. We should love the God of consolations, not the consolations of God.
I recommend that you do something every day that would be known only to you and God as a sign of the love for the Blessed Virgin even though you don’t feel anything.

A relationship with The Blessed Virgin Mary is a wonderful thing to have. Here is the wonderful thing about out faith, it has pretty much nothing to do with feelings but will. You don’t have to feel it. For example you may not always “feel” like talking with your spouse, but you know you love them even if you don’t feel it. That is a deeper kind of love than an emotional level.

If you are not already I would encourage you to start wearing a Miraculous Medal. You can get one for free here:

I feel that way too. I don’t have any emotional connection to Mary. I think it’s because I don’t experience any maternal love/relationship with anyone, so it is hard to ‘imagine’ it with Mary. However, I don’t have a good relationship with my dad yet I find it easier to connect with God. Maybe that’s something you’re experiencing as well?

Dear Visitor58,

It was good to read this comment from you:
I have read Saint Louis DeMontfort’s True Devotion to Mary. One of the points he makes is that devotion to Mary is the quickest way to salvation.
Have you read this little book more than once? It is really a “gem” written by a Saint- Priest who loved Mary, although he never mentions ( at least to my knowledge) much about “feelings”. That is not to say feelings are not important; they are and they can help us or God would not have created us with our emotions as part of our human nature.

I’ve read “True Devotion” many times and each time I learn more. We are called to love God with our whole heart and soul and mind and strength, and St. Louis helps us to discover how to have devotion that is “true” and not false. I would encourage you to take that little book in hand again and re-read it slowly, asking the Holy Spirit, given to us in our Baptism to bring you into the full Truth of Jesus and Mary. Their union is a model for us, which is why St. Louis encourages us to Totally Consecrate ourselves to Jesus through Mary.

Perhaps you have already tried the 33 Days preparation for Total Consecration. If not you may want to follow St. Louis’ directions in Chapter 7 of True Devotion. The online version can be read HERE Preparation and Consecration directions are written in paragraph 227 but the book itself explains why Mary is so important and how devotion to her is the easiest and shortest way to salvation. I would also encourage you to look particularly at Chapter Two - “In What True Devotion to Mary Consists”. Note especially the marks of False devotion in contrast with the marks of True devotion.

If God has given you the desire “to feel” your love for Mary, then trust Him to show you how. Keep asking Him to show you more clearly how to love her truly. He does not tell us to do something without enabling us to do it, by His Grace, but we need to ask in order to receive, seek in order to find and knock that He might open the door for us.

St. Therese of Lisieux once said wisely : “Everything is Grace”. She also also wrote a beautiful poem you may want to read sometime – if you haven’t already read it. The Title is “Why I love you O Mary” This link will take you to all her poems but if you scroll down the Table of Contents you’ll get to it, just click on the title. See HERE

May the Lord grant this desire of your heart, dear visitor! Our hearts were made to love and to be loved. 🙂

Thanks again to everyone who responded to me with all sincerity and desire to help. May god bless all of you!

Wanting to love God is loving Him already, which is why it is actually easy to love God.

I am willing to bet that’s the same with Mary too.
