dmelosi:
Can either of you that believe once saved always saved explain the following?
Perseverance is a necessary component of salvation:**Romans 8:30
and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.**
(cf Is 43:1-3; 54:10; Jer 32:40; Mt 18:12-14; Jn 3:16, 36; 5:24; 6:35-40, 47; 10:27-30; 17:11-12, 15; Rom 5:8-10; 8:1, 35-39; 1 Cor 1:7-9; 10:13; 2 Cor 4:14, 17; Eph 1:5, 13-14; 4:30; Col 3:3-4; 1 Thess 5:23-24; 2 Tim 4:18; Heb 9:12, 15; 10:14; 12:28; 1 Pet 1:3-5; 1 Jn 2:19, 25; 1 Jn 5:4, 11-13, 20; Jude 1, 24-25).
That’s a conditional statement: “IF…”
If someone does not continue in faith, that one never had a saving faith (cf Lk 8:11ff).
This is seen in other passages as well; I’ll cite one to begin with:**Colossians 1:21-23
21 And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds,
22 yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach—
23 if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, was made a minister.**That passage seems to teach the possibility of losing salvation IF one draws the inference “if we do not continue in the faith, we shall be lost.”
However, one has not been saved, if one does not continue in the faith (cf Lk 8:11-14). The past fact of one’s being reconciled to God (v 21, Gk. aorist tense) will be manifest by his continuing in the faith (v 23).
Same as above. Earlier in the passage, the writer states:**Hebrews 3:6
6 but Christ was faithful as a Son over His house—whose house we are, if we hold fast our confidence and the boast of our hope firm until the end.**You will draw the inference, “if we do not hold fast, then we shall cease to be Christ’s house and shall be lost.” But the verse doesn’t say that. It says that, if there is no perseverance of faith in the future, we are not now Christ’s house. Our failure to meet the future condition is due to our not experiencing the past conclusion (cf v14).
Those Jews who return to Judaism, were never members of “Christ’s house” to begin with, as their not persevering makes clear.
