I was told that suspending the common cup was out of fear & ignorance, & I was ignorant too

Wow! I explained to a non-Catholic minister, a Lutheran ( Lutherans believe in the Real Presence), about how my church and archdiocese, as well as other archdioceses throughout the world, including the Church of England and Methodists, for example, have suspended the use of the common cup out of caution and safety of the church members due to the Coronivirus.
He informed me of my ignorance of the sterilization properties of the silver and gold of the chalice, as well sterlizing properties of the alcohol, that would kill the virus. And that we have to take both species as Christ commanded. He also said that the Precious Blood, by it’s very nature as being Christ’s blood, that it, too, would kill the virus. The wine/Blood of Christ is not a cesspool, he also said.
Additionally, he knows me and knows that I am an EMHC, so his calling me ignorant is especially hurtfull, treating me like I’m stupid, particularly when it comes to the Chalice & Precious Blood. I take my duties as a EMHC seriously. It’s a tremendous honor.
It is easy for Catholics to forget that non-Catholic religions don’t just see us as a different variety of those who follow Christ, but actually against the things they think Christ initiated, and to whom they’re very opposed. The more the person adheres to his own religious variety—and the higher they are in their religious worlds—the more they look down their noses at us. They may tolerate us on a superficial level, but they’ve drunk the Kool-Aid, and they really do think we’re wrong—and very stupid—to follow Catholicism.

Your friend believes the lies he’s been fed, the crux of which (amazingly!) is that his religion is true and that ours (more amazingly!) is a false, manmade religion. He definitely feels superior and that you’re a religious imbecile. Depending upon the extent of their good manners, such superficial “friendships” may last for decades, and they may even “play nice” with ecumenical emperor’s clothing, but the underlying amazement and scorn for our stupidity will last as long as they believe that their brand of religion is true and ours is not, or until they draw their last breaths.

No matter how we may rail at that idea, it’s a fact.

You nailed it! Your explanation was perfect. And when I tell you some additional information, which others will undoubtedly see as well, you’ll see how spot on you are. It’s really bad enough that I and my (our) Catholic Church was attacked like that, but what really hurt, is that he is (Was, as of yesterday, because his verbal assault on my faith and my person, my wife’s Pastor. She’s Lutheran ( And I have nothing against the Lutheran faith or Lutherans), but my wife was hurt by his comments (He’s made other comments about me in the past, so this was the last straw for her, so to speak). She says that a verbal attack on me is an attack on her. Even though we have different faiths, it does pain me to see her go through that. I can handle it, as I’ve been called far worse, believe me, but what happened is enough for her to lose her faith.

Yeah, the Earth is flat, 6,000 years old, Evolution is fake, Carbon dating is not reliable, the speed of light isn’t accurate, the universe isn’t 16 billion plus years old, I heard it all from Evangelicals etc… 😆

there’s a youtube vid out there about a star that is older than the universe, assessed by the standard methodolgy used for such things.

I’d rather have a little faith in my bishop than a lot of faith in myself. 😉

Sadly, I had a good friend yesterday refer to all of us who abide by our Bishop’s guidelines as “ye of little faith”.
It is sad that your good friend has so little faith. She “knows” that pathogens are capable of a moral calculus that you and I are not, and can discern the difference between a cup of common wine and a cup which has been consecrated as the blood of Christ.

Her small faith grants her an empirical test for the real presence – Sprinkle some mold spores over the cup, and if the contents become corrupt it is merely wine; if it remains pristine it is the blood of Christ.

I, on the other hand, can only discern the blood of Christ through eyes of great faith.

In my diocese the bishop has issued a 3-1/2 page letter regarding the corona virus situation. The key words in the letter are:

It is also importent that all people remain aware of the guidance of national, state, and county health officials in order to avoid highly contagious diseases.

Well, the letter also addresses the use of the chalices, etc. but his guidance is not based on fear and ignorance, as suggested in the title of this topic.
