Yeah, attending a Tridentine Mass is next on my list!!! (Although I could spend forever and a day in a Byzantine Divine Liturgy!!)

But yes, the Byzantine Divine Liturgy is…Divine! There really are no words for it. Praise God! There should be a Byzantine Catholic Church in every city of this country. Imagine the effect on church attendance and the religious implications that would have!
It isn’t called the Divine Liturgy for nothin’!

Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory to Him forever!

You know, I don’t know if does, but it would make sense. He writes that Mass is Heaven on earth, and I feel this very deeply in a Byzantine Liturgy. My mother always told me that in every Mass all around the world all the angels and saints are standing around the altar during the Liturgy of the Eucharist . Maybe she is right…
…their is no doubt about it.

In the East the deacons carry fans (they look like circle disks on a stick) around the altar, and in the procession. If you look, you should see the face and the six wings of the seraphim, representing visibly their invisible presence.

Divine Liturgy is always going on. We just drop in from time to time.

As far as germophobia–do you really think that Jesus would allow germs to linger where His Body and Blood are present? Personally, I don’t think so! However it is true that the alcohol content in the Wine which has become His Blood will kill any germs.

Frankly, I don’t think that there could possibly be any harm to take His Body and Blood, nor do I think that the Lord would allow it.

However, I have heard of some priests that, in pastoral care for their alcoholic sheep may put aside a small amount of the Lamb so that there will be no stumbling block for one who is in recovery, but firmly believes that the wine might harm him. However, this is an exception, and not the rule.

One thing of interest–the Melkite Catholics do not use a spoon. Rather, they cut the Lamb into small strips, and the priest takes a small strip of the Body, dips it into the Blood, and places the whole in the communicant’s mouth–again, the idea is to open your mouth, tilt your head back, and let the priest place the whole in your mouth. Then you may close your mouth, after he has removed his fingers.
This practice was commanded by the Pope of Rome himself in the 1800’s, the intent was to increase communion.

Cool. I really liked it, and it was even more surprising that there were only about 30 people there but they all were talking and praying and going up to icons. I didn’t know if it was over or not!!
It’s never over. We can only take it in small doses.

I just found out from the priest who says Liturgy at the parish I went to last week that I can come any weekend I like!! YAY! That means I’ll be going every time I get the chance!!👍
Not to be nit picky BUT the priest does not say DL and the Faithful do not hear it, but they CELEBRATE Divine Liturgy.

In case any others are reading this who would like to visit an Eastern Catholic parish, I want to clarify this point: the priest was only stating a fact to him, not giving permission.

All people are welcome in an Eastern Catholic parish for a visit or as a regular parish home. Roman Catholics have the canonical right to attend any Catholic Church, and it *does *fulfill their Sunday and holy day obligations to do so.

Some Eastern Catholic parishes maintain the traditional schedule of Vespers on Sat evening and Liturgy on Sunday morning, and it is being restored in many more places. In that case, Vespers does not fulfill the Roman Catholic’s Sunday obligation like a Saturday Mass would. All are welcome to attend, but Roman Catholics would need to come back (or go to another Catholic church) for a liturgy to fulfill their canonical obligation.
TOTALLY off topic but OH WELL.

I just heard a commercial on relevant radio on the movie in your sig. I’ve always wondered about it, and now I know why

😃 Go see it! Second best thing you’ll do that weekend next to attending Divine Liturgy. 😃
Third best-there’s Vespers:D
As I am writing on EWTN I am listening to the star of Bella talking about the movie.

Btw they played a trailer and I saw some reference to American Beauty. What’s the connection? (AB was my favorite movie until the passion of the Christ).

Maybe that is also won the Toronto Film Festival and went on to win an Oscar as they are hoping Bella will do after its Toronto win?

Movie times are now published in most places and I’m seeing a lot of late evening times. Since you won’t want to be going after Vespers, you need to look at the schedule now to work it around that and Liturgy. 😃

Off topic, but I can’t believe that Bella is finally coming out! I met the procuder and got invited to a sneak preview of the movie in summer 2006 in Washington DC, and I must say that it was an incredibly moving film.

I went to another Divine Liturgy this weekend while visiting Dallas. I believe this is my home. I told the parishoners that I would join their parish if I lived in Dallas, and they said I can anyway. I want to call myself a Byzantine Catholic even though I know practically nothing about the customs, except what I have picked up while attending the DL.

I do know this much: To celebrate in the Divine Liturgy IS TRULY TO WORSHIP GOD WITH YOUR WHOLE BEING!!! I am trying to read all that I can about the DL, so that I know everything I can possible know. I cannot stop thinking about the DL, and the chants are always in my head.

O God, be merciful to me, a sinner!
O God, cleanse me of my sins and have mercy on me!
O Lord, forgive me, for I have sinned without number.

I am not really certain how this fits into the discussion to this point, but good to see you maintain form and never miss a beat in denegrating the awful west.
Yes, he sounds just like a Traditionalist, now doesn’t he? 😃

I can find ten times as many Roman Catholics stating essentially the same thing. It isn’t about the awful west, just about the awful mess! It could have happened in the east, but…

That’s all I am going to say on the subject.

I am glad for your sake that you feel this way.

I had a similar experience my first time at a Divine Liturgy.

A note on the question of whether to close one’s mouth on the spoon when receiving the Holly Body and Blood of Our Divine Lord. My pastor told me on one occasion he was giving an elderly gentleman Communion and when he pulled the spoon back the gentleman’s false teeth came with it. I do not believe that this is the source of the practice. I do know that in the courses I am taking at SS. Cyril and Methodius Seminary to become (God willing) a deacon in the Byzantine Church, the instructions are to open wide and do not close your mouth on the spoon. I suppose it is a minor variation of praxis.

Yout got me kids? THANKS!
