I have confessed to a chaplain, now laid to rest, who held a high rank. I would not accept advice based on military rank without assurance that both canon law and pastoral experience were part of a person’s background.
I reverted to the faith from my professed atheism, praise Jesus and thanks to Our Mother, Mary. My pastor at that time granted a general confession. However, he need not have and made it clear to me that even in this extreme circumstance a general confession was not necessary for absolution. A proper state of life was needed and I had made many changes in my life to be in a worthy state of life for obtaining the Sacraments. If you live in good conscience then work on your scruples to know this to be true, and do find a priest who will help you with scrupulosity.
That chaplain also granted me an opportunity for a general confession. In this case I made it clear to him that I had the opportunity several years earlier and thanked him for his consideration on those elements if secret matter he intended I may have needed to confess. God knows our hearts and even if we fail to knowingly speak our sins, this is different than purposely concealing sins, He hears our heart prepared to be made clean. God loves you and His mercy is boundless, accept absolution and do not reject the love Jesus has for you, a special creation in God’s own image.
