By The Associated Press

LONDON - Britain’s advertising watchdog has banned an Italian ice cream ad featuring a pregnant nun, saying it causes offence to Catholics.
The magazine ad for ice cream maker Antonio Federici showed the nun eating a tub of ice cream, with text that read: “Immaculately conceived … Ice cream is our religion.”
The Advertising Standards Authority said Wednesday it has received 10 complaints from magazine readers who said the ad was offensive to Christians. The agency said imagery used to illustrate immaculate conception was likely to be seen as mocking the beliefs of Roman Catholics.
The Italian company said the idea of conception represented the development of their ice cream and the ad aimed to gently satirize religion.

Only in Europe would a company pay millions to take a shot to insult the Catholic faith-the fact that it’s an ice cream company of all things doing it just shows how deep Europe is lost in secularism and anti-christian feeling.

More information, and a photograph of the ad, can be seen here:

The company, being denied advertisements in magazines, is vowing to produced posters which will be posted publicly:
BBC article:
Antonio Federici says it will now put up new posters near Westminster Abbey.

Pope Benedict XVI will visit Westminster Abbey on Friday, before holding Mass at Westminster Cathedral on Saturday.

I’m just glad something is being done about it rather than just let it be in the name of freedom of speech.

I’m amazed it actually was banned. It’s crazy how far people will go to insult Catholicism. You wouldn’t see this kind of thing done about Islam!

Unfortunately it’s multiple ads .Here is a quote of the homosexual activist who helped create some of the ads.
British firm Antonio Federici said the adverts celebrated the ‘implied forbidden Italian temptations’ of the ice cream.
Creative director Matt O’Connor said the company would lose a substantial sum if it had to pull the campaign and was considering a legal challenge.
He said: ‘Only a tiny proportion of those who have seen the ads have made complaints. They seem to be upholding the views of a bigoted minority over the majority.’

Adverts are bad enough without them being stupid or offensive. This one was both; it is a good thing it is banned.

It’s not so much that the ad attacks our faith, as that it takes something sacred and uses it for cheap (not-even-funny) humor and to sell something. It’s very bad taste. There are some things you shouldn’t joke about.

What strikes me is their misunderstanding of the Immaculate Conception. And as with protestants and others thinking it has to with the birth of Jesus. Anyway I’m glad someone came forward to protest them.

I have to admit. I have not seen the ad, but on the face of it; it sounds kind of funny. The pregnant nun is a comedy staple and an extremely popular Halloween costume. I’ve see the pregnant nun costume many times —*even at Catholic School Halloween parties.

Pretty ironic thing to say comig from a homosexual activist. I wonder if he wouldn’t take offense to me making a print ad using two homosexual men with a ghostbusters sign across them to promote aids awareness. I personally find it hilarious!

I can’t imagine that any Catholic would think this is funny or an appropriate Halloween costume at a Catholic school, or anywhere.

👍 Your wit is superb, N.A.

Now, as one who has no use at all for the excesses of modern secularism, I nonetheless wonder if this whole thing doesn’t parallel the Muslim cartoon event?
This from a Belgium newspaper at the reaction of Muslims to the Danish cartoon of Mohammad:
“Muslim fundamentalists have threatened to bomb the paper’s offices and kill the cartoonists.”

To my knowledge, Catholics don’t go around bombing ice cream companies.

I think you’d feel differently if the Halloween costume was of Luther as a gay man.

Well thank goodness we do not react in this way when made fun of.

I guess not the first Italian ad that is “offensive”

When I was about 7 or 8 there were jeans called “Jesus Jeans” the ads featured a bearded young man in jeans…😦

I also remember full nudity in soap commercials, nudity in iced tea commercials, all at least 25 years ago. The equivalent magazines to Time and Newsweek, often feature a topless woman on the cover.

Very sad.

As others have said, I have yet to hear of any Catholics who are threatening violence about it.

Also, the company is very inconsistent.
Defending the banned nun advert, Antonio Federici said the idea of “conception” represented the development of their ice cream.
It added that the use of religious imagery represented its strong feeling towards its product.
“We don’t know why you’re offended–we’re not making a statement about yout religion, we’re making a statement about our product…”

However, they admit they want to
“comment on and question, using satire and gentle humour, the relevance and hypocrisy of religion and the attitudes of the church to social issues”.
“… But your religion is irrlelvant and hypocritical and its attitudes to social issues are wrong & we kinda wanted to let everyone know that.”

I only wish I was in the UK so I could go out and buy a lot of stuff from their competitors. It makes me want to buy gallons of their competitor’s stuff and give it to a homeless shelter or something.

BTW, according to the article, it’s not an Italian company. It’s based in the UK–I guess it’s just trying to make people think it’s Italian because that sells ice cream.

The streets of the Catholic world erupted in violence today. with Dairy queens being burned by angry militants… Spokesmen for the ice cream company fled in terror as angry Catholics shouted “Death to Vanilla”!!!
