It seems clear that the world is heading in a direction that I do not see it backing out of. See some of the comments - “Somewhere along the way, the populace in general will FURTHER recognize that gay people are deserving of equality under our laws. In general this is happening in much of the country, but “protect marriage” has become code words for discrimination against gay people. In the end, the churches who denigrate and deny the humanity of LGBT people - all part of God’s creation, will suddenly see their coffers running dry, and never understand why, for they have been blinded by their own propaganda and deceitfulness. In particular, all Catholics should realize that Jesus never said a word against gays, and he did say that besides Loving God, we should all love thy neighbor as ourselves”. And these folks should demand the church change, or cut off the contributions. And see just how fast blind faith suddenly becomes enlightened. Reminds me of the statement : The truth shall set you free."
This one was especially ominous - “Give me a break. In fact, give yourself a break and get it through your neanderthal skulls that the world is changing, and in 20 years, your ignorant protests will be akin to using racial slurs, and your children will be chastising you for having such little, hateful minds. I wonder which minority, whether by class, race, sexuality or gender, we’ll be demonizing by then.”
and
I said just the opposite if you read my post on the issues. I think when you study cultures that change over time, as ours has in its short history, you will see resistance to change on many levels. Some resist gay marriage out of hatred, it’s true. But I believe most resist it for a variety of very legitimate reasons. I just think those reasons are all wrong. I really do liken it to the civil rights issue of the 20th century as well as the woman’s sufferage issue earlier in the 20th century. Not all men were ignorant slobs (okay, maybe a lot were but not all). They were resisting a sea change in society when it came to women voting. Remember, for more than half our history, women could not vote. How silly that looks to us now here in 2009. I fervently believe the thoght of not allowing a man to marry a man or a woman to marry a woman will seem just as silly to the average american in 2059.
Well, it’s an objective fact - Gay relationships are morally wrong. Unfortunately, in a world that doesn’t believe in objectivity, we are going to come across as hateful bigots. We’re gonna look like the people who still adamantly support racism now.
We have to come up with more compelling arguments to counter this.
