Someone asked me about this icon today. It states on the site she found it on that it is Mary Magdalene.

Any thoughts. THANKS!

Thanks for the link. I am oddly seeing the image now. I am not sure why I was not before.

You are correct, that is not a iconographic portrayal of the Magdalen with which I am familiar. She is usually with the container or with an egg or both (when seen alone). It is not an image of the Theotokos with which I am familiar either though, but solo images of the Theotokos are not common. But I can’t make out the writing.

Sorry I am not more help.😊

I hope everyone had a wonderful feast of the Holy Myrrh-Bearer and Equal to the Apostles, Mary Magdalen.

salaam.

It is the Icon of the Protecting Veil of the Theotokos–1 October.

Usually she is shown surrounded by different groups of saints, but solo versions like this are not unheard of.

Yea, that icon is not of St. Mary Magdalene, it is of the Theotokos.

Yes, thank you all. You confirmed what I tought. God bless you!

That icon is the Theotokos? Why then have Eastern Orthodox Christians often harshly criticized Latins for having depictions of the Blessed Mother without the Christ-child? Obviously the Byzantine Tradition has them as well.
