My parish has an ethnic themed event. Meh. Tell me what you think of my idea for this type of church picnic:

“LOVE FEST”
(of others, true)

The title should get people’s attention. The “of others” part is intended to counter the Love-of-Self desire for individual entertainment that is being promoted by the secular media which inspired me once I saw a bumper sticker that said “God first, others second, I’m third.” With so many families breaking apart due to the liberal secular media’s promotion of Love-of-Self, the church’s message of romantic Love-of-Others (spouse and kids) sure needs a boost. The “true” part is designed to counter the liberal secular media’s promotion of more Love-of-Self’s physical and chemical pleasures. We need more romantic Love-of-Others emotional and spiritual depth. Inquiring minds will raise awareness naturally.

Whaddya think?

dumb idea.

All you will do is keep decent people away, find sick joy in tricking people and try to keep away the hippies and teens looking to get some.

Try things like “fellowship” and “community” and “neighbor”

Well it’s funny that you would interpret the meaning of Love that way. It really says something about our liberal secular culture, doesn’t it.

Come to think of it, it could be a spoof on Woodstock. Break out the tye-dyes and headbands. Some of the large families always seem to have a mom who can go barefoot and pregnant for real. Many of today’s fashions are already about peace and love. Some fashions look like they were made for Woodstock. Face painting booths, jewlery making. The message just needs the real definition that produces results instead of hyped hope.

Everyone knew “free love” wasn’t really about true love. Now, it’s time to turn the tables.

Kisses on the cheeks for everyone!

My gut reaction was:
Huh? What? Ugh…no telling what that might be. Won’t be attending with my kids.
Sorry, just being honest.
It seems like way too ‘LSD, Tie DYE, Hippie, wow-man’ and I have to be honest that I didn’t get the by-line at all. ( and I have a number of tie dyed shirts that I wear regularly!)

If you want to do a Woodstock spoof, you will need to be a bit more blunt about it, or it will be lost on some of us!LOL!!

Some ideas for clear cut slogans:

“Come find the Real Love of Jesus that Woodstock missed”
“The LOVE at Woodstock was NOTHING compared to the love of Jesus…come check it out!”
Jesus served Loaves and Fishes, Woodstock was full of mud…we won’t have either! Come for some clean fun!
Jesus didn’t die for tie DYE! He died to save!

Just don’t go down the B-52’s road to the Love Shack! 😉

My immediate gut reaction is hippies.

Love Fest conjures up images of tie-dye, peace signs shaggy hippes, hemp pants, hemp smoke… I wouldn’t read any more of the flyer, that’s for sure.

It’s sad that the first thing many of us think of when it comes to a gathering of people in love is “hippies.” What does that say about us and what does it say about hippies?

It says they co-opted the word.

Gay used to mean happy and lighthearted, in the not-too-distant past. The Flintstones will have a gay old time! It’s been co-opted, too.

Language moves on.

In that sense at least, I sympathize with OP’s attempts to “take love back”

I think of a touchy feely huggy feel good bunnies and sunshine festival - ick ick. Not my style at all. I would not go.

I would also assume its a thing for couples, and as a widow, I would not go. Also, my children would not go, as they would be uncomfortable at a huggy love fest.

I would change the title to:

FREE LUNCH!
(with paninis and red wine)

I think you’ll attract a lot more people and can then spread your message to full stomachs.

The idea sounds nice but I think you need a better name. Love festival just sounds ick.

My slogan was designed to disturb people into awareness. C’mon people! WHY is it that the far left media can make fortunes as shock-jocks, but the minute I try to shock people into goodness, people run away from it? Have we been propagandized that badly? Where’s the sense of humor in it? Have any of you seen how goofy some of these movies are? Why are we not entitled to have some of the same fun with it? At least it would get people to think about it.

Maybe I’m sarcastic enough to drive by a catholic church with a LOVE FEST sign and bust out laughing. I would know something was up, and I’d be curious to investigate, which is the point of the message. 👍

I think more would stay away than would investigate.

If they hung a sign that read,

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION FEST

the usual saints would attend.

It’s time to be BOLD. It’s time to take chances, instead of enduring this false hope and change, as marriage and true love worsens. We need to reach the LOST, those who have been prostituted by the culture into a lifestyle of Love-of-Self. It pains me to see relatives and friends who can’t wait for their next paycheck so they can buy more pleasure for themselves, in whatever lust for physical or chemical pleasure they fancy. It’s time to take Love back. Do not go gently into the night.

Because we think love is “icky” and it is best to only speak the word poetically as is done here… but never practice it? 😃

What the heck?! People see Love Fest poster in a church andthey ould think it’s a hippie gathering?

That’s like saying that if you saw “sex” on a church poster you’d thinkof porn.

I, for one, don’t think it’s a bad idea to spin distorted notions into normality. I’m sure there can be better ideas but it’s late so I cant think of them. I definitely would participate in any family-oriented activity at my church, ragrdless of what the organizing committee chose to call it. But to eaxh his own.

Between the “fest” and the “others”, I think it sounds like a parish-sanctioned wife-swapping.

The love you find wanting in this world, after all, is no “fest.” It is found by those who stick around when there is definitely nothing festive in it for them. So to have a “love fest” sounds as if you’re talking about “love” in one of its secular incarnations. You could change that to “love feast” and the connotation would change a great deal, but I think the general perception would still be that this was another of the half-witted experiments we have been subjected to over the last 40 years or so, all of which happened because someone didn’t realize the results of parish-sanctioned events could be far worse than “meh”.

In short: the experimentalists will show up with bells on, the game parishioners who dutifully show up no matter what the DRE has cooked up this time will dutifully show up once again, setting up tables and tearing it down all by themselves, and that’s all you’ll get.
