Between the “fest” and the “others”, I think it sounds like a parish-sanctioned wife-swapping.

It sounds funny in print, but I know of a parish where wife swapping was practiced/accepted.

Man on Fire, you’ve certainly gotten some flames, haven’t you?My parish has an ethnic themed event. Meh. Tell me what you think of my idea for this type of church picnic:
“LOVE FEST”
(of others, true)
The title should get people’s attention. The “of others” part is intended to counter the Love-of-Self desire for individual entertainment that is being promoted by the secular media which inspired me once I saw a bumper sticker that said “God first, others second, I’m third.” With so many families breaking apart due to the liberal secular media’s promotion of Love-of-Self, the church’s message of romantic Love-of-Others (spouse and kids) sure needs a boost. The “true” part is designed to counter the liberal secular media’s promotion of more Love-of-Self’s physical and chemical pleasures. We need more romantic Love-of-Others emotional and spiritual depth. Inquiring minds will raise awareness naturally.
Whaddya think?
Let me clarify: I wouldn’t read the poster thinking it actually was going to be a wife-swapping! It would be more like one of those unfortunate newspaper headlines, like:What the heck?! People see Love Fest poster in a church andthey ould think it’s a hippie gathering?
That’s like saying that if you saw “sex” on a church poster you’d thinkof porn.
I, for one, don’t think it’s a bad idea to spin distorted notions into normality. I’m sure there can be better ideas but it’s late so I cant think of them. I definitely would participate in any family-oriented activity at my church, ragrdless of what the organizing committee chose to call it. But to eaxh his own.
I’m afraid to ask…It sounds funny in print, but I know of a parish where wife swapping was practiced/accepted.

I’m not! What happened?!?I’m afraid to ask…
There was basically a “small group” in the parishes dedicated to strengthening marriages or something to that effect. Turned out to be a group of swingers… I understand that it went on for quite a while before someone reported to the pastor what the group really was.I’m not! What happened?!?
I don’t think it is a contraction. I think it is a rip-off of Oktoberfest. This is just one of my little pet peeves perhaps…
I am not attending anything that even uses the word “Fest.” Nope. Not even Lobster Fest.
Hey, if you want to have a fun time, call it a festival. But a fest? Are we so busy that we can’t even say a complete word anymore?![]()
It does sound kind of hippie-ish. If you say that is a picnic with that theme, it might improve the odds of having more people show up. Many people will probably wonder how family friendly it will be.My parish has an ethnic themed event. Meh. Tell me what you think of my idea for this type of church picnic:

That could be true. But it still annoys me.I don’t think it is a contraction. I think it is a rip-off of Oktoberfest.
You know, as in once there was a Watergate scandal, now every time you mean “scandal” you just tack “-gate” on the end.
That poor pastor…There was basically a “small group” in the parishes dedicated to strengthening marriages or something to that effect. Turned out to be a group of swingers… I understand that it went on for quite a while before someone reported to the pastor what the group really was.
We are probably too easily annoyed, but I’m with you! That could be true. But it still annoys me.
And I agree about the “_gate” thing. Another one is “_oholic,” which I truly find annoying as well.
Okay, or maybe I am just easily annoyed.![]()
If you have no Love for the Love Fest, then you’re probably better off at home.I think more would stay away than would investigate.
Hmmm. Love Feast. I like it. Amazing what one letter does.Between the “fest” and the “others”, I think it sounds like a parish-sanctioned wife-swapping.
The love you find wanting in this world, after all, is no “fest.” It is found by those who stick around when there is definitely nothing festive in it for them. So to have a “love fest” sounds as if you’re talking about “love” in one of its secular incarnations. You could change that to “love feast” and the connotation would change a great deal, but I think the general perception would still be that this was another of the half-witted experiments we have been subjected to over the last 40 years or so, all of which happened because someone didn’t realize the results of parish-sanctioned events could be far worse than “meh”.
In short: the experimentalists will show up with bells on, the game parishioners who dutifully show up no matter what the DRE has cooked up this time will dutifully show up once again, setting up tables and tearing it down all by themselves, and that’s all you’ll get.
I think they used to call them agape feasts…because of course they spoke Greek and Greek has more words to differentiate what kind of “love” you mean.Hmmm. Love Feast. I like it. Amazing what one letter does.
But what would be the theme of “Love Feast.” “Love Fest”'s spoof on woodstock would at least gain some traction because people would know how to have some fun with it.I think they used to call them agape feasts…because of course they spoke Greek and Greek has more words to differentiate what kind of “love” you mean.
Agape wouldn’t fraudulently lure in the eros crowd, but that’s your call.![]()
Ewwwww. Gross. There was basically a “small group” in the parishes dedicated to strengthening marriages or something to that effect. Turned out to be a group of swingers… I understand that it went on for quite a while before someone reported to the pastor what the group really was.
