Idolatry and hypocrisy

I don’t really know what in the world is going on in this topic. 😆
I believe that it is entirely possible that many Catholics haven’t followed the teachings of Pope St JPII and Pope Benedict XVI regarding the manifestation of idolatry in this day and age. They don’t realise the insignificance of tribal concepts of god to affect us and the great significance of modern idols like wealth, power and pleasure to overtake our souls. Aquinas made the comment…

"There was no idolatry in the first age, owing to the recent remembrance of the creation of the world, so that man still retained in his mind the knowledge of one God. On the sixth age idolatry was banished by the doctrine and power of Christ, who triumphed over the devil." Summa Theologica II II Q94 Art 4

Anyone who knows Christ and is illuminated by the gospel can’t possibly be threatened by the old forms of idolatry. But they can certainly be threatened by the new forms.

the maronites have nothing to do with worship of nature or the earth. So don’t draw any comparisons from our prayers to what you personally believe.

To be honest with you I am not really sure either
It’s the influence that current authority in Rome (save some who are divided) has not stood up to, but embraced with an excuse of fellowship.
My whole life has been a product of the authority of Rome. That is being a Catholic.

All idolatry is to be turned from. We all need Gods help to do so.

The western world is the only reason more people in poor country’s aren’t starving or suffering from famine. Our advances in GMO crops, food, and financial aid have saved millions of lives.
This doesn’t necessarily have any correlation to the concerns that prompted the Amazonian Synod. But more to what I think is the point of your post, there are pros and cons to such a high level of production. One of the cons is improper management of the land. Which is a concern in the US, but was also one of the concerns of the Amazonian region’s native people. Some of whom are Catholics without much support.

It’s just misguided people trying to rationalize their enablement of earth idolatry and comparing it to Christians venerating the Queen of Israel, as well as shaming people for the wealth they have in relation to others. Pretty bad bait imo.

Pray for them. Pray they don’t go full modernist.

God love you, Magdalena.

We also recognise her as Queen of Earth.
Mary is still not the earth!! She is a person, a saint, a woman!
The earth is NOT a person, a saint, nor even male or female!

Mary and the earth are NOT one and the same. No.
Mary shares the maternal characteristics which are manifest in the earth God created. Also of the Church. Also of the first woman. Also of all creation.

The earth is not a person. The earth cannot love you like a mother can. Please stop comparing our queen with something dead. It is not funny or amusing.

Yes, and thank you. I completely agree.

God bless you.

I think maybe you’re taking some things that are said too literally. There’s no equating Mary with the earth here.

It’s more like when Jesus called Peter a rock.

The OP literally compared the earth to Mary in regards to veneration and intercession earlier. It wouldn’t be any streach of the imagination to see that the OP is comparing the earth to Our Lady. Which is offensive.

The earth is not our mother. The earth does not deserve veneration. The earth is creation, creation that God Himself gave us dominion over.

Nachomama, along with other gentile dieties belong in the ash heap like the Golden Calf (literally Moloch, also a fertility statute) in Exodus.

Sister Dorothy Mae.
This happened in 2005. The article is from 2007
I found it fitting for the title of this thread.
Sister Dorothy Mae, an American - Brazilian nun who gave her life for the poorest of the poor in Amazonia.

This discussion has got me wondering…

How do you evangelize to a primitive native/earth worshipping people if you can not try to bring their beliefs into alignment with Catholicism? If you start out saying your idols are false and here’s the truth, you have lost them before you’ve ever started! Whereas, if you start by trying to find similarities between what they currently worship and your own beliefs, you give them a path to move forward. It may start out looking like syncretism but if you eventually arrive at Mary and the people will listen, aren’t you actually accomplishing your goal?

For starters, this isnt evangelism. These are fellow Catholics in South America They know Jesus, and still are venerating a pagan goddess.

Second, finding similarities is fine. Venerating is crossing a line

Are you referring to the Popes that I quoted condemning modern idolatry?

When the point of the Amazon Synod is to be aware of how the idolatry of western greed is destroying others, how is it that some can put all their angry zeal on the image of a little pregnant carving of a mother who nourished humanity from the soil? It is so hypocritical and embarrassing to be part of this greedy west without having equal zeal for the downfall of western greed.
The point of the Amazon Synod was several points, capitalism and the destruction of the Amazon being just one point.
You might do well to find out why people are distressed and scandalised, rather than assuming ‘angry zeal’ on an 'innocent picture or carving or statue of a ‘poor old indigenous heavily pregnant woman’

Here is a key ’ who nourished humanity from the soil’

Who , my question is to you, does the nourishing of humanity. who has created absolutely everything and sees to its ongoing nourishment or drought.

Who has this role, who is the Creator, who is the created?
