Idolatry and hypocrisy

The earth.
God nourishes the earth. God is its creator.

Here is a clue, we all came from dust , we will all go back to dust. We were created from dust and there we will go.

The earth, the soil and the people , all the beasts, Dust!

The OP literally compared the earth to Mary in regards to veneration and intercession earlier. It wouldn’t be any streach of the imagination to see that the OP is comparing the earth to Our Lady. Which is offensive.

The earth is not our mother. The earth does not deserve veneration. The earth is creation, creation that God Himself gave us dominion over.

Nachomama, along with other gentile dieties belong in the ash heap like the Golden Calf (literally Moloch, also a fertility statute) in Exodus.
Can you not even have praise for the earth in the context of John’s Revelation?

Rev 12 13 So when the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. 14 But the woman was given the two wings of the great eagle, so that she could fly from the serpent into the wilderness, to her place where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time. 15 Then from his mouth the serpent poured water like a river after the woman, to sweep her away with the flood. 16 But the earth came to the help of the woman; it opened its mouth and swallowed the river that the dragon had poured from his mouth.

Is that not a reason to be thankful for Gods earth? I know that Protestants aren’t keen on Revelation, but we Catholics have no fear of it.

No one is arguing to not be thankful for the Earth. As Christian’s, we thank God for the Earth. We dont thank the Earth for the Earth.

I give my thanks to God, not to the earth. Again, the earth cannot hear you. I’m sure some protestant sects believe that the earth can, but as Catholics we believe the earth cannot hear you. Do I need to quote the Psalmist Pope Francis quoted earlier?

Sounds like Earth worship is coming to the Catholic church, and I don’t get to say anything about it because I have the audacity to make a modest living for myself. Awesome.

Sr. Dorothy Stang, Martyr of the Amazon | National Catholic Reporter

Sister Dorothy Mae.
This happened in 2005. The article is from 2007
I found it fitting for the title of this thread.
Sister Dorothy Mae, an American - Brazilian nun who gave her life for the poorest of the poor in Amazonia.
That is an inspiring woman of the Church for sure! Thanks graciew. ❤️

“Tell all that we must make great efforts to save our planet. Mother Earth is not able to provide anymore. Her water and air are poisoned and her soil is dying of exaggerated use of chemicals, all in the name of profit. Pray for all of us and for a world where all can live – plants, animals and humans – in peace and harmony.” In 2002, the death threats intensified. The mayor of the nearby town said, “We have to get rid of that woman if we are going to have peace.”

When the point of the Amazon Synod is to be aware of how the idolatry of western greed is destroying others, how is it that some can put all their angry zeal on the image of a little pregnant carving of a mother who nourished humanity from the soil? It is so hypocritical and embarrassing to be part of this greedy west without having equal zeal for the downfall of western greed.
The point of the Amazon Synod was several points, capitalism and the destruction of the Amazon being just one point.
You might do well to find out why people are distressed and scandalised, rather than assuming ‘angry zeal’ on an 'innocent picture or carving or statue of a ‘poor old indigenous heavily pregnant woman’

Here is a key ’ who nourished humanity from the soil’

Who , my question is to you, does the nourishing of humanity. who has created absolutely everything and sees to its ongoing nourishment or drought.

Who has this role, who is the Creator, who is the created?
I have heard that argument to denounce the intercession of the Saints many times… but always from Protestants. As Catholics we acknowledge Christ in the patronage of the Saints.

And it sheds light on the situation so real, so dangerous, people go through in Amazonia.
The story of this nun brings the light of God into our lives so warmly…
I read she is in the process of canonization, I have to double check though…

That sounds very Protestant. Go straight to God. No need for the intercession of Mary and the Saints.
There’s no reason to consider it in a spiritual manner on it’s own.
How do you evangelize to a primitive native/earth worshipping people if you can not try to bring their beliefs into alignment with Catholicism? If you start out saying your idols are false and here’s the truth, you have lost them before you’ve ever started! Whereas, if you start by trying to find similarities between what they currently worship and your own beliefs, you give them a path to move forward. It may start out looking like syncretism but if you eventually arrive at Mary and the people will listen, aren’t you actually accomplishing your goal?
I see how that works, but the manner being used isn’t really tactful which can also make it severely ineffective. Some of it’s just unconventional for no reason.

The earth is dead as the rocks and idols. They cannot hear you like the Saints and God can.

Are you referring to the Popes that I quoted condemning modern idolatry?
No, just you and people like you who see wealth and people who have wealth, even if they earned it fairly, as evil. People like you who call rich people idolaters while enabling the abused Amazonians in theirown idolatry of the earth. You have the audacity to compare Our Lady with the pagan Nachomama. The same Nachomama that demands human sacrife and infanticide.
The earth and nature are not dead. Beasts aren’t dead. All religions share many of the same symbols that embody a universal character. Jesus is the ‘lamb’ of God. The ‘dove’ of peace. The divine ‘sacrifice’ . The ‘tree’ of life. Two of my kids are going to Israel next week, specifically to walk on the earth Jesus and the Apostles walked on. The hallowed ground. In this recognition we are in fact part of the ecology of Christianity.

Mary is referenced as the ‘moon’ who imbued with the light of the ‘sun’, has the power to grant us the comfort of God through her intercessions.

These are cherished Catholic principles. We are not in any way shape or form separated from the natural world as if we are the holy ones and everything else is evil.

No one is arguing to not be thankful for the Earth. As Christian’s, we thank God for the Earth. We dont thank the Earth for the Earth.
And that even though we are high and mighty Catholics, we are failing to be thankful and respectful of the earth and our habitat… why is it not right for the Church to urgently remind us of what real respect for the earth looks like? Even through the example of respect for the earth still shown in other faiths?

For those who read the story of Sister Dorothy Mae, the person who killed her mercilessly is serving 27 years prison.
There are persons who forge titles of ownership of land there , over 1000 persons have been killed just for trying to defend themselves from the greed and the corruption abundant in this area.
It is serious, and grave and the Church is there present , compassionate and struggling to evangelize despite all this.

This reminds me of another irony. Pope St JPII made a habit of kissing the ground of nations he arrived in as a sign of respect and blessing. The same people who poo pooed this act as un Catholic, took issue with Pope Francis discouraging people kissing his ring. Same people.

Mary is referenced as the ‘moon’ who imbued with the light of the ‘sun’, has the power to grant us the comfort of God through her intercessions.
These are just symbols or analogies that help paint a picture that are not to be praised in of themselves.
And that even though we are high and mighty Catholics, we are failing to be thankful and respectful of the earth and our habitat… why is it not right for the Church to urgently remind us of what real respect for the earth looks like? Thanking God for these things are the same thing. I’m not sure why one would go in an over about way to respect the Earth if a reasonable effort is used to not needlessly destroy it.

What you are calling ‘earth worship’ has in fact been part of the Catholic faith for millenia. I’m from a farming family with a number of clergy involved. Whenever any important seasonal event happened, such as planting harvesting or picking, we had a blessing ceremony, much to the angst of the local Protestants. That’s the Catholic way.

I should add, that my uncle has blessed our new houses as well. We don’t think that’s pagan at all.

Respect for the Earth does not look like a ceremony honoring Pachamama.

That’s all im saying.

Blessing things isn’t the issue.

But who believes that the synod was promoting a ‘manner being used’? The synod was a listening event. Listening and understanding what we share in common of the divine life. If pachamama was replacing Our Lady, I’d be all there against it. But that’s not what’s happening at all.
