Welcome to the Forum.
The reason we Catholics - and Orthodox - truly have honor for things we can see and feel, etc., has to do with the Incarnation in that Catholicism understands and appreciates the reality of the Incarnation, whereas much of Protestantism merely pays it lip service without truly appreciating what it means for God to have become Man; as St. Paul says of Christ: “He is the visible image of the invisible God; and so in seeing Him we are caught up in love for the God we cannot see.”
I suggest going to read the prophecies over my friend… God’s I WiII and God’s Curses. Read: Isaias and Jeremias over and over it is filled with God’s disgust of doing these things. God fortells the coming of Christ what we have done to him etc and foretells the end God’s warth for doing them.
Please speak for yourself when addressing Catholic’s when you say Catholics…"honour of things we can see and feel’. So I ask you we honour statues of Mary, Jesus. It “feels” like a stone and looks like we used paint in different colours. I ask you do you know what God’s image is? Are we not created in God’s image? can you not touch me? Happy are those who have not seen yet believe for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
Next you say: Quote… “Protestantism merely pays lip service without truly appreciating what it means to have become man. What it means for God to have become man”. You know God’s thoughts do we? How insulting as a Catholic to judge anyone or know anyone’s heart or soul my friend. Sounds Protestant bashing from a Catholic to me and I do not see God’s IMAGE in you, shame on you.
Next you say: Quote Mary and the other Saints who reflect Christ
thereby reflect the Fathers Glory. “WE” God’s children are also to reflect the Fathers glory for were created in the IMAGE of God our Father. I ask you is this not true, did God not tell us that we were created in his IMAGE?
Old Law, New Law…God is the same today as yesterday. god is not dead my friend but all seeing, all knowing. God is the Great I AM the beginning and the end…Read Apocalypse.
Jesus… accomplished the VISIBLE WORKS so the INVISIBLE GOD could be seen.
Next I Quote you: If everything is merely spiritual why did Jesus need to come in the flesh at all!!"
So “MERELY” spiritual is of “no value or importance”.? Remember Adam and Eve where spiritual till they sinned and God’s wrath removed them from Heaven. What did they do after they sinned, they sought to cover themselves immediately. God loved them Dearly. God removed them from Heaven, from his garden, God also covered them. God said " If you eat from the tree of good and evil" God said: “you will surely die” God means what he says and does what he means, don’t you think? That is why Jesus in “great humility and humbleness” came to us in the “FLESH”. For we would not see him “spiritually”, don’t you think?
I believe I will not go to hell if I chose not to have statues or pictures, icon in my home or what ever. I rather seek to become the image of God. “To me” I feel I insult God by doing so.
Jesus did not have his apostles make one to show us what God look like. And they kept asking about God. If you see me you see my Father he not mean Flesh. Jesus accomplished God’s visible works so the invisible God could be seen.
What is God’s “IMAGE”. THE GREAT I AM, ALL HOLY, ALL SCARED, ALL LOVE, ALL TRUTH, CREATOR OF ALL SEEN AND UNSEEN, ALL MIGHTY, ALL POWERFUL, ALL UNDERSTANDING, ALL SEEING, ALL KNOWLEDGE, ALL INFINITE, ALL WISDOM, ALL GLORY, ALL HONOUR, ALL COMPASSION, ALL MERCYFUL, ALL GIVING, ALL SORROWFUL, ALL GRACE, ALL BLESSING, ALL PATIENCE, ALL CARING, ALL PROVIDING. I could go on and on. Now I “ask myself” how can I even “think” I could make a statue or whatever out of stone, paint it, gaze upon it, touch it, kiss it, bless it, bow before it, talk to it, ask it, dust it off, having to carry it, place it, pick it up if it falls, repair it if cracks, paint it, put painted black eyes on it and even think that I am giving honour worship in doing such a thing and comparing it with “God the great I AM”. When “I am” the temple of the Lord who dwells in me. When I was created in God’s IMAGE. No I seek to become the 'Holy" image of God my Father
God Bless …a very little child of God. God when I look in the mirror I seek “your image” before me.
