Icons aren’t painted so we know how the people depicted on it looked like. Even protestants use the cross yet the cross they use doesn’t really look like the crosses Romans used. It’s not about painting the phisical but rather the spiritual reality. Of course the images do depict some physical reality, but that’s not their purpose.
A good point! 👍

William Churchill was a great man but I’d be abhorred if i saw someone prostrating themselves in front of a statue of him. Same with the a statue of Mary or the Saints.
William Churchill???

No offense, but you evidently know as much about history as you do about Catholicism.

Quite a thread…it’s grown to nine pages of squabbling and arguing from non-Catholics and a few who claim to be Catholic but apparently were never instructed very well, and fruitless explanations by Catholics to people who have their fingers plugged into their ears.

This is my final post in the thread, but to all my fellow Catholics here, if I may offer a small bit of advice: do not feed the trolls.

Not intending to feed any ’ trolls’ ; just that since we are on the Eve of Chrismas , when His Glory shone all around - even on those oxen and sheep …and we can be merciful , like Him …who gave us lot more than what any one of us deserved …

The interest in this thread also possibly gives some clue to the deep yearning of many to find The Truth …esp. considering the severe judgements that Israel called down , when she became unfaithful in this area ( now true , idolatry was probably more a sign of her having become unfaithful in other areas of her relationship to Yahweh and to each other )

May be there is even the hidden wish that The Church is true and spotless , in an insane ( idol worshipping ) world ! - since that is one of the consequences of idol worship - loosing the sense of who or what man is and who God is …

What many seem to miss is one key phrase in the first commandment - ’ you shall not make for YOURSELF an idol '…there in comes the diffrence between the Cherubim on The Ark -which were made in obediance to God and the other graven images that man was tempted to carve - to take the place of The True God .

The fall had brought in the enemy’s lie …the enemy whose intent was to destroy man , made from matter…and its ploy was to seduce man to make gods out of the appetites of the body and its pleasures …so that when man became even more frustrated from realising that that god only made him a slave , he would become violent and despairing in his passions …

But then came The Light …from a Good God who had made everything for Good …

Body -as The Temple of The Holy Spirit …

And The Father taught His children that precious lesson , by going all out …The Old Temple as a type …even the worship guidelines also to help us - in our sacred duties of relationships …marriage …preciousness of life…

Is it any coincidence that it is The Church , who have the balance and truth in this whole matter and has been the Light … and are the lies of idolatry, the enemy’s ploy to hide this truth …esp. now that we have The Thelogy of The Body …and man would truly consider his sacredness …

Yes , we , made of body and soul are sacred …and we can respect and venerate … esp. those who have lived , not for oneself but for God…

One major problem non catholics face is possibly because of the Major deficiency in their concept of Adoration … specifically with regard to Eucharist…

God had His chosen people guarded through centuries against the lies and distortions of the enemy …this ,esp. about His true and substantial Presence which was to be only in The Eucharist …not in idols … so that in the fulness of time , when He did chose to be present with us , it would not be any source of confusion or contention but only of unity …

And it is …for The Bride …for The Church …for persons of Good will !

Peace !

One more thought before I go to sleep in peace thanking all who posted in helping me, especially at the end. I am not boasting but boasting in what I have received I am always ask to speak and do readings at funerals, weddings, in church, say grace at functions etc. be godmother etc so you can see why I kept these thoughts about this topic of idols to myself. For if you knew me personally you would never say I am anti or what ever but Catholic! I just want to do all that pleases God and seek the truth in all things. I am a sinner and I am not highly educated to such depth as some of you here. Not to offend anyone but such great knowledge gives me a headache. That is why God has sent you to me to help me in my simple way to stay on the right path. But just simple and I am a very little child of God.

Please pray for me for I shall pray and thank God for you…gives gifts are beautiful Good night Merry Christ mass
Approaching difficulties regarding this or other articles of Catholic doctrine with humility often brings the truth to light. If you contrast this and other recent posts of yours on this thread to your earlier ones here (for example, posts #64 and #83), you will see why your Catholicism came into question. I hope you can see now why simply asking questions as to why the Church teaches as it does about the use of statues and icons - or other aspects of Catholic teaching - is the better way to find answers to your difficulties; far better than throwing around accusations usually found made by Protestants.

God bless you with His peace at the Feast of the Nativity of Our Lord. 🙂

If it’s a 100% true fact that you are not a spokesperson for all the RC’s on this forum then STOP trying to speak on behalf of all the RC’s on this forum!

Also i notice you refused to answer if you have the authority to interpret Sacred Scriptures.
Since Church Militant has repeatedly offered LINKS to the official teachings of the Catholic Church, and his words are completely in line with Catholic teaching, there is no reason in the world for him to do so.

Church Militant, while not an “official” spokesperson for CATHOLICS, all of them, including those of the Latin Rite, CM is someone that if I had to pick ONE person in CA forums, he would be MY official spokesperson!

However, do you have anything to refute any of the various links to the official Catholic teachings that have been provided by Church Militant?

Or do you continue to insist that the Church teaches something but provide no proof of said teachings except your own erroneous opinion?

Yes,I am Catholic and I find with in my family of Catholics they do not like the topic of idols. It is not a ridiculous posts considering idols we are told, we are forbidden to crave, make as it is written in the bible. It is a serious matter at least for me for I look at it as a sin. The topic is about idols, if I disagree what is an idol then they call me a Protestant and they bash me. Very confusing to me as a Catholic, a child of God to hear this.

God Bless
Are you in any bible studies currently? And which Church denomination would that be with? Do you go to Mass every Sunday, or a non-Catholic Church?

Your views reflected here are ususally held by those who may be currently Catholic but are in bible studies with non-Catholics who are showing them the evil of the Catholic ways.

You should consider getting into a really good bible study with some strong Catholic Christians instead of relying on those whom scripture warns us will come along teaching falsely.

Respectfully,
Maria

Amen! 🙂
