If atheists can be saved (without accepting Jesus), what kind of baptism (baptism of desire?) do they get?

OM, that makes sense because you said “if they die as an atheist they will not be saved.” However saved can be mean that the sanctifying grace received perdues until death, so the salvation occurs before death.

Another question to answer, the one of the thread is: “If atheists can be saved (without accepting Jesus)”.

Now for that question, salvation is reception of sanctifying grace, which does not require explicit acceptance of Jesus.

Living in a state of grace does not mean you are saved. You are only saved (or not) when you die. The state of your soul at death determines your destination and not how you have lived on earth but naturally we should strive to live as Christ wants us to.

It is doctrinal to say that a person can die with a variety of grave sins and be saved. It may happen frequently or infrequently, but it is doctrinal to say that it can happen.

Not such is not the Teaching of the Catholic Church.

One dying with even one grave sin - is not saved.

Now there can be sins that were grave in nature…but not committed with the needed knowledge and deliberate consent but in that case no grave sin was “committed”.

And yes it is possible that God in a way known to God can can even rich a person in their last moments. But again then the person is not leaving this earth in grave sin.

Yes one is not saved in the final meaning of the word…

But

Yes living in a state of grace* does *mean one is saved.

A person who is living in Christ - in the life of grace - is saved. One is not only saved at the end.

Otherwise they would not have that true life.
