Animals have a degree of awareness, but how does it arise from a purely material basis?

Because materials are the building blocks of everything. And there has been a gradual change in the way life has evolved. If you keep asking the same question every time you get an answer then we eventually get back to ‘how can life emerge from non living materials’.

Exactly how? Well, we know it actually did, but we don’t yet know the exact details. But there are plenty of suggestions that look promising.
