Hi Steve, 🙂 I thought you were a proponent of The Theory of Evolution. You’re statement confuses me. I’m lead to think that you believe God created and organized the universe then ran the whole shebang. Is this what you want me to think?

vern said, “We studied God’s universe, learned the rules he built into it and created things like electric generators, light bulbs, and many other things. We still study it, still learn, and still develop new inventions based on His rules.”

Hi Vern, 🙂 I thought you were a proponent of The Theory of Evolution. What are God’s rules that he built into the universe?

What you both have presented to me is flavored with tinges of ‘creationism’. Please correct me if I have misunderstood your intent. Thanks in advance. 🙂

There is no conflict between science and religion. Among God’s rules are gravity, relativity, quantum mechanics and so on. By studying the universe around us, we are able to discover some of these rules and put them to work for our advantage.

The same study has revealed that live evolved over hundreds of millions of years.

Thanks vern for replying. 🙂 There is great conflict between science and religion! 😃 Haven’t you heard about Intelligent Design folks misleading the public and demeaning experts in the field of science? 😃 Come on, I know you know. 😛 I’d like to know if you think science and religion has to do with ‘faith and reason’. If that be the case then I’d refer you to this url:

Gravity, relativity, and quantum mechanics aren’t rules. How does a person go about understanding these rules of God that turn into scientific theories. Does God implant them into the mind of scientists? 😃 It sounds like weird science to me. Why do we need scientists if God made the rules?

vern humprey said, “The same study has revealed that live evolved over hundreds of millions of years.”

What study are you referring to? God’s study of the universe or scientists?

Thanks 😃

I’m a Catholic. The Catholic Church does not teach there is a conflict with science.

Indeed they are – in fact, they are sets of rules. If you jump off a cliff, there is a rule that draws you to the bottom – and pretty smartly, too.

If you don’t believe it, I invite you to try it and see what happens.http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon12.gif

Do you find S=gt^2 in the Bible? Or E=MC^2?

We must study God’s universe to find his rules. There is a systematic method of study (and various refinements of the system, depending on what is being studied.) This is called the scientific method.

We need men who are trained in this method – just as we need bishops to teach us the theological rules.

I am referring to the scientific method. God did not give us the light bulb or the internal combustion engine. He allowed us to study His universe and learn the rules needed to make these things with our human hands.

steveandersen:
He did. He just took billions of years to do it.
For an eternal transcendent being how is this any less “direct” then saying “Aacazam, you’re a human”?
He just took 6 days to create everything. and as God is omnipotent, I tend to think each day is shorter than 24h.
Can God create human in a second? Yes of course, then why billions of years?

Why/ how would evolution preclude a special process? I’m sorry but I’ve never been able to understand this objection.

The subtle beauty of the process is amazing…very special IMOH
If it includes a special process, then it’s futile to understand it from physics. just as physics can’t explain every other miracles.

vern humprey responded, “I’m a Catholic. The Catholic Church does not teach there is a conflict with science.”

I’m a Roman Catholic too! 😃 Tell it to the rest of the Catholics that our faith has nothing to do with science except for the Science of Philosophy as stated in the above mentioned url and what was written by Cardinal Ratzinger in 1998:

"If theology wishes and should be something other than the science of religion, something more than confronting unresolved questions about what transcends and at the same time constitutes us, then it has to be based solely on the fact that it comes from a response that we ourselves did not invent. But for this answer to be truly an answer, we have to try to understand it, and not let it be diluted.

“The special nature of theology is that it concerns something that we have not imagined and that can ground our life precisely because it precedes us and sustains us, that is to say, because it is greater than our own thought. The path of theology is well expressed in the formula Credo ut intelligam: I accept a proposition previously given in order to find, from it and in it, access to true life, to a true understanding of myself. This means in turn that theology presupposes, by its very nature, an auctoritas. It only exists because I know that the sphere of my own thought has been transcended, because I know, so to say, that a hand has been extended to help human thought, a hand that pulls one upward, beyond one’s own powers. Without this presupposition, which always surpasses the capacity of one’s own thought, and which is never diluted into something purely personal, there would be no theology…”

I’ll pass on the cliff, though I did take a nasty fall when climbing over a very high fence the other day. Talk about a midnight blue right arm. 😃 Neither you or I are scientists. Let’s say ‘what goes up must come down’! 😉 I don’t think scientists would call that a rule. But, God doesn’t make us fall down. My point is that God didn’t make the rule that if we fall from a cliff or fence we might get hurt. 👍

Heck Vern, I know what is in the bible. 😛 It is God’s universe to me too! 👍 However, I wouldn’t agree God makes scientific rules that govern over us. If I’ve understood you correctly, you’re attributing the scientific method as the study of God’s rules. Nah, I don’t think scientists would agree with you on that hum dinger! 😃

Yep, we have scientists that continue to help us better understand our world and the universe we live in. 👍 Fun talking to you. You’ve plum tuckered me out! God bless you.

vern humphrey:
There was a time when if you wanted to have light at night, you had to build a fire. Now, you just flip a switch.

How did that happen? We studied God’s universe, learned the rules he built into it and created things like electric generators, light bulbs, and many other things. We still study it, still learn, and still develop new inventions based on His rules.

Yet somehow, our method of study which works so well in designing things from light bulbs to computers, doesn’t work when we study how life evolved.

It is a puzzlement.http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon12.gif
God isn’t restrained by physical laws. That is why miracles can happen

vern humphrey:

Do you think God’s only rule is that? no. they’re nature’s rules not God’s rule. God’s only rule is love. physical rules are created to make lives easier for humans. If you want to use it to understand God, you’re wrong.

I doubt that we can say with certainty that God did not create the world last Thursday. After all, God can pretty much miracle anything into existence. There will always be explanations that we cannot strictly rule out. But the real question is: what hypothesis does the evidence point towards? And it is clear that it points towards a universe billions of years old, and the evolution of life on Earth according to biological processes.

the method to determine the age of rocks is faulty. and there’re threads dedicated to reveal the absurdity of evolution from a non-theology aspect.

Like abcdefg’s or davidford’s? ; )

If you’re criticizing radiological dating, you might want to take a look at this. It’s interesting to note that radiological dating is consistent with several other methods for determining age. For example (this is in the link), the Hawaiian islands are formed by a hot spot in the Earth’s mantle. The tectonic plate there moves at a slow but measurable rate (this is why there’s a chain of islands). So we can estimate the age of each island by its distance from the hot spot. And it is very consistent with radiological dating. Funny, eh? We can also use astronomical data to estimate the age of the Earth - and yet again, it is consistent with radiological dating.

if you like to discuss about it, abcdefg and davidford have started various threads about it. I don’t know why atheists should jump in a thoelogy thread and make off-topic posts

No good Christian/Jew/Muslim can ever discover evolution.
Why God forbids the faithful to discover truth? and have this truth  revealed by an atheist/agnostic?

one can be a faithful and discover newtonian law, theory of relativity. but never evolution
This hurts, right?

It certainly seems to me that my posts are, in fact, on-topic. You asserted that it was possible that God created the world in 6 days; I agreed but noted that this is not really the point. You asserted that radiological dating was wrong; I attacked that assertion.

I don’t even need to attack radiological. God is so eager to have something to love that he can’t stand waiting for billions of years.

Some atheists say God’s all mighty so have no desire to do anythin. this is wrong. God still can’t have nothing to love. and this is genetically programmed into humans too. Hitler must have believed he’s “omnipotent” at the height of his power, yet he still keep a German shepherd as a pet

I suppose so, Alec. I submit this unusual contraction from a few posts up as evidence, since abcdefg also used it a number of times in several threads.

If you really want to make that case, these are some interesting facts:
abcdefg’s account is currently under review.
abcdefg’s last action was to go off of CAF at 3:55, January 7.
GodnCountry’s join date is January 7, and his first post was at 4:03.

But it’s not really important. It doesn’t matter what his/her name is; it matters what the content of her/his posts is.

2 Peter 3:8
But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like one day. 👍

Thousand, million, billion. What’s a few orders of magnitude to God.
