If God Exists...

You can take this as you wish…am just reporting some occurences in my life. Maybe it answers your question in as much as anyone else can…but I leave it to you.

During childhood, my underlying preoccupation was with God. Yet I sometimes wondered if God really exists, and questioned whether it was truly possible for God to love such massive numbers of imperfect human beings. When finally I posed a question about faith to my father, he simply replied, “You just have to have faith.” That was unsatisfactory to my logic.

I recall an episode during a time of particular interior questioning when I was ten years old. As I roamed Saint Michael’s schoolyard, pondering those troubling questions yet again, I was thinking— “We are like millions of generations of ants…generation upon generation of ants”.

Expecting no response, I cried out in my heart, “How can You possibly love us?” Immediately I was engulfed in tremendous, comforting peace that said—“Because I am your Father.” I did not know the term, ‘begging the question’ but if anyone had given that answer, I would have been dissatisfied. I already knew that intellectual answer but, because it was spoken into my mind by that peace, I accepted it with contentment.

Second such episodes, also unexpected, on my last day of secondary college.

My memory of the Mount Isa sky is of bright stars in the darkness that gave no reply. Many times I called out in my heart to a God I did not know existed, and if God did not, how could God answer? I would cry out past the edge of my being saying: “Power of Goodness and Love, if You exist, love Yourself in me.” “I can’t find You. Please find Yourself to me.”

I sometimes recalled that final day at ‘Kildare’ after matriculation, when I stood immobile at the top of the stairs, reluctant to leave, aware of deep unanswered religious questions, and fearing that I would be unable to maintain faith in the years ahead. “What if I abandon You?” I cried out in my mind to God. For the second time in my life, there came a powerful peace, which said, “You may abandon me. But I will never abandon you.” I would think, “But He did abandon me.” Oddly, although I recalled the words, I did not grasp what had actually been said, perhaps because of the reassurance of the accompanying peace.

Thank You God of goodness and love for the longing in my heart for You in my decade of unbelief. You never did abandon me, or how could I have prayed as I did? When I was unable to believe, and in integrity would not program myself to believe just because I wished to, You still caused me to long for You. Heaven seemed silent during those troubled years. I reached out into the darkness, seemingly in vain. For ten years, God remained a painful loss.

On the morning of June 15, 1978, to my surprise God suddenly drew me back to the Church. Upon awakening, I had no idea this could occur. Afterwards, I said to God, remembering that day on the stair, “But You did abandon me because for many years I lost You”. Finally, after all those years I realised that the actual words were only that God would never abandon me, not that I would not abandon God, although that was the assurance I sought.

God, You promised only that You would never abandon me. I continued reaching for You who seemed not to exist, praying that You would “find Yourself to me, love Your love in me, and think Your thoughts in me.” This surely meant You had remained present to me. You seemed absent, non-existent, but how could I pray into space with no response, unless You gave me grace to continue seeking while refusing to deceive myself into false belief? God’s grace flows through all the varied situations of life. Sometimes we manage to recognize it

  • I only tell you this stuff because you want to believe in God but you don’t experience Him so can’t believe and because it does happen to be true, but take it or leave it.
I’m sorry but it’s true that most of us have to live most of the time with just…faith. Maybe I’ve been a bit spoiled by heaven and if so only because heaven saw I had a mind whose questioning nature could have had me far from God and Church very easily. I think God might do this extra-care thing because I’ve a long-term tendency to pray creatively for others and maybe He really wants that. This is what I figure anyway.*
Glimpses from heaven
During 1981, I took some flowers to my parish church. They were sent by someone who unnecessarily feared that I might resent his monopoly of my husband’s time in assisting him in setting up a Company branch in Townsville. I filled a vase and carried the flowers to Mary’s statue, and was shocked at the unexpected sense of white-hot grief coming at me. I exclaimed audibly, “Mother, what has he *done *to you!” I later discovered that he was a former priest, married without Church sanction.

In praying for Priests, I naturally began praying earnestly for the gruff, shy Irish priest, who came to dinner at our home in nearly every Saturday. He flew up for Mum’s funeral in July 1965. I never saw him again. Within the year, Father lost his faith and left the priesthood. My sisters and I felt sorry for him. We heard that he worked as a gardener.

In 1981, when my grandmother was dying and my father had flown down to be with her and the family, I suddenly was aware of the priest. He was so amazed, delighted and grateful. I was alone, so his presence was inexplicable. When Dad returned home from Melbourne, I immediately contacted him to give him my sympathy. “Dad I’m so sorry about your mother,” I began, but all he said was, “Father D. died about the same time as your grandmother did.” Years later, I was informed, “Father D. was reconciled with the Church on his deathbed.” It was then that I understood his presence, and his gratitude and delight at that time when Dad said he died.

Once during the early 1980s I was, amongst others, singing hymns around the deathbed of a cheerful, dying blind nun in Brisbane. I asked her, “Will you give Jesus a hug and kiss from me?” She laughed musically, “Yes, I’ll give Jesus your love.” I had to leave, to meet my husband for shopping. Suddenly at one thirty-five as we approached the supermarket checkout, I felt a surge of uplifting joy. It was evening before I was able to return to the convent. A sister answered the door and told me that Sister Angela had died. I asked the time. “One thirty-five” she told me.

Another event occurred when my husband and I were living in Mackay. One Sunday evening at the beginning of Mass, suddenly someone confronted me within. He was familiar despite his venerability and graciousness. I spoke playfully with him, “Well, if you’ve come to me at the beginning of Mass, then you want me to pray for your intentions, so okay, I will.” We returned home to a phone call from my stepmother who said, “Noel has died”. I had not known that her brother-in-law was dying. It was strange that so many years passed between that event, and its possible explanation, the marriage of my father to Noel’s widow, M.

Perhaps, when he died, he came into the knowledge that his children would become my stepbrothers and sister, and his wife, my second stepmother. I should have prayed much, but we often do not give enough attention to heaven’s promptings. When Noel died, did he become aware that my father would one day marry M. only to find that she was already afflicted by Alzheimer’s and therefore in his eighties my father found that he faced ongoing trauma?

There was a similar lapse of years between the image of my brother David’s face with his eyes closed and flames around his head. “This is what will occur if David does not stop drinking to excess.” I felt very anxious and prayed more intensely for him. Soon afterwards, he gave up alcohol for many years; only returning to drink after his marriage broke up. He repeatedly tried detoxification but this the image proved true. Having returned to the Sacraments after 32 years absence, he died a month later when his car hit a pole. His car ignited and flames destroyed his body.

crowonsnow, smells and bright sun can do the same for me. My experiences sound similar to yours; I think that they mostly were the result of brain chemistry. I appreciate everyone else’s responses as I realize that you are trying to help, but all these words don’t mean much to me without any proof. You say, “God is great; God is loving,” but where is the evidence? In the sick and dying that fill the earth? In disease and abuse of power? There is also a great deal of good, but everything seems so unbalanced and unjust. Why are some poor and sick while others are rich and in good health?
You ask “where is the evidence?” and if it is in the sick and dying.

I say it is in those who have found meaning in their suffering. It is in those who have accepted Christ’s invitation to share in His suffering and joined themselves to Him.

How “unjust” was Jesus’ suffering and death?

He didn’t remove the injustice, instead He redeemed it by showing us how to live in the face of it.

Thank you for your response, Bubba Switzler.

What I’m really looking for is some type of “higher plane” experience. I want something out of the ordinary because the day-to-day can leave me feeling empty. Has anyone felt a connection with a higher being?
I have felt a connection with God, but the problem with feelings is that they fade away. God is more than a feeling and if all you’re looking for is a feeling I hate to say that you’re going to be disappointed. Consider this, when you first meet someone you really really like, you’re consumed with the warm and gushies for a little while. You date this person for a time and you find that the warm and gushies fade. You can’t rely on your feelings because they’re not always reality. And to put God in a box of things that have to be felt is kinda simplifying what He really is.

I live a life filled with the obviously supernatural and when I was striving to please an atheist milieu it upset me not to be able to explain it all away. I think we all get the messages from God we need to find Him. It took a lot to get my attention. Being interested in science, you might just have it in you to come to real faith based on the reports of people like me. I was a hard sell back then. But God got to me and I have faith now.

That was very nice what you said David. Today I was reading Hebrews 11 about God’s discipline … ouch … I know I am not running toward the cross yet … it hurts … and pain is not something I enjoy … LOL … but you have hit it right in the center of the bullseye in my opinion … the cross of Christ and allowing God to join us to Him … that is true freedom and life.

You hit the ball out of the park … if you don’t mind me using a corny saying. I was talking to my wife today about leadership. You know what a true leader is? For us it is a person who doesn’t just tell other people what they need to do or where they need to go. But rather it is a person who will go where they want others to follow. I think you know exactly what I am talking about in reference to your comments.

But in all relationships, don’t you think there is a process of conflict and resolution? As you continue to be honest with the other person that you were attracted to in the first place, and learn how to communicate about conflicts with each other in a reconciliatory manner, don’t you think your relationship with that person grows even stronger? And sometimes those feelings can come back … .and grow even stronger through that process of growing closer together? I think that is true also of our relationship with God and being honest with Him in prayer. You grow closer to God and allow Him to get closer to you.

If God exists, God is necessarily Infinite Being. The very idea of a finite creature calling Infinite Being to the dock for not measuring up to that creature’s standards is absurd.

– Mark L. Chance.

Why does he not reveal himself more?
I have had what one might term “spiritual” experiences.
Now that I need a God figure most, I can’t seem to find any. I hate the idea of living in delusion, and I want to know: Has anyone really felt a connection to a higher being?

My sister, how clear would you have Him? Even Moses wasn’t able to look at God’s face, but only from behind.
You have asked for our experiences, but then said they don’t mean much without proof. The Catholic Church has many saints, and most of them have been recognized only after several miracles in their name after their death. Perhaps you could read about them? Also try the miracles at Lanciano and Fatima. The evidence IS also in the sick and dying. Caring for them is an act of mercy. They are closest to God’s heart.

👍 I’m sure you have heard of the expression “the proof is in the pudding.” I whole heartedly agree that the “proof” of the truth in the Catholic Church is in the lives of the saints. I think we just had two of the greatest … citizens of heaven here on earth … Mother Teresa and Pope John Paul II. I doubt that there was much that needed changing in their lives if anything at all. They most likely in my opinion were admitted straight into heaven after their death, and had little if no purgatory (cleansing) at all. We pray “may your Kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven.” I think we clearly saw the Kingdom of God in the lives of these 2 people very holy people.

There is only one thing I can say to this - YES, YES, YES, YES, YES. The poor are the most dear to the Lord’s heart. I think He identifies with them very closely … and that doesn’t even come close to expressing it … I think you can see it most clearly in the life of Mother Teresa.

gods not gonna pop out and say “hey!” because it eliminates the need for faith, and hes a creature of faith, so i guess that sums up my feelings on it.
it would be kinda nice for him to call every once in awhile…

Galatians 4:6"And because ye are sonsGod hath sent forth the Spirit of his Soninto your heartscrying Abba Father"ask God to **send **his **Spirit ****into **your heart

Luke 11:13"…how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him"
I think it really is this simple. You have to talk to God. Ask him for what you need. Be persistent. And wait and see how he responds.

In college, one of my strongest desires was to meet the person who would be my wife. Sometimes feelings of loneliness would be intense. Every morning driving down to school, I’d say the Rosary (or some part of it), with that intention. That prayer was answered. It took awhile. But looking back, that was OK. It had the affect of making me appreciate the answer more. (Although the answer thinks I still need work in that area.😃 )

I can think of another time. Also school related. My last final for my last class for my BSME was a difficult advanced math course. It was open book, open notes. The thing missing in my notes was the solutions to the last midterm. I didn’t do well on it. Or the previous one either. I pretty much had to ace the final to get my degree. And I really didn’t know anyone in that class. I studied as much as I could. But I had no idea how to work some of the problems on that midterm. So I’m praying/worrying as I’m driving down to school. On the way in to the final, out in the hallway was someone I recognized from class, standing at the copy machine, copying guess what, the solutions to the midterm. Call that Irish luck or prayer answered. I always thought the latter. And yes, I aced the final and went on to become a great appreciative husband.

Why does he not reveal himself more? Please allow me to state that I am not trying to be rude or get myself banned. I am a science student who has been trying to find some evidence of a higher power, but I just can’t seem to feel any being trying to relate to me. I have had what one might term “spiritual” experiences. For example, one summer vacation during my high school years, I was extremely happy. I stayed up until dawn many days and listened to music. I biked in the sun, and I was happy. To me, it was the essence of being alive. I still experience happiness, but it is not as often and usually only occurs after I have completed a great deal of work. When I think of the halcyon days of my childhood, I feel as though there could have been a God figure involved, but many of my current days are too repetitive and seem to make me think that life is a long series of pointless actions and reactions. Now that I need a God figure most, I can’t seem to find any. I hate the idea of living in delusion, and I want to know: Has anyone really felt a connection to a higher being?

**If an author exists, why does he not appear in his books ? **

**The analogy is imperfect, but not quite valueless. God is too great to be reduced to fitting into His own creation. He can come among creatures only by being a creature in appearance; which is what He has done in the man Jesus of Nazareth. **

Thank you Gottle of Geer for that … as I lift my pint of Guinness to you 🙂

they do…
do you not look at the jackets?
They do and they don’t. They do in one context but not in the context of what Gottle of Geer was referring to in my opinion.

In another context God does appear in his story in my experience. I can look down my face and actually see a nose … or at least I think and hope its a nose … and I actually can “see” God the author because I exist … my experience that is now in my bones informs me that God is present … because otherwise I would not exist … I and each one of us are God’s story in a way … and He is not done writing it yet … I can’t wait to see and read the rest of the story 🙂

My darling you used “I want” twice in the post to which I am responding.

May I suggest the humility to stop wanting and wait for grace to reveal itself. Go to a church kneel down and ask God to help you. Tell Him you are ready to be his daughter. Wait. He is your father. it is not for you to command Him.

Either he doesn’t exist.

Or he doesn’t need for humans to acknowlege him.

The point of life, is either meaningless, or God has already designed it into our being.

There are lots of arguments about how we “MUST” be faithful to an invisible being, but I think a lot of us realize how silly that is. Let’s just follow a human religion, believe people "had " god revealed, or you HAVE ALL HELL TO PAY.

Pffft…

Either God does not exist, or God does not require belief.

God may require something…but it certainly ain’t belief… lol !!
IF God does not exist, then there is no point in life. You live your 100 or so years and you disappear forever. You return to the nothingness or space atoms as Carl Sagan suggests.

You’re absolutely right that God does not need us or our beliefs. He does not need anyone or anything at all.

BUT it is we who need God, in our finite existence we are the ones who crave immortality and meaning in life. And it is God, who says, that faith is the key to eternal life. By sending His Son to show us the way, He tells us faith and love will lead us to eternal life.

The proof or evidence is in the lives and testimony of the great saints who have gone before us. I suppose each and every one wants their own personal miracle to prove to themselves that what Jesus and His friends say is true.

Maybe IF you ask, you may be granted such a miracle. And even if your request were granted would it be enough ?? And how many miracle would it take to make you believe ? Is one or two enough ? Couldn’t they just be tricks or illusions ? What kind of miracle would satisfy you ?

Would a host turning into a human heart suffice ? or how about the body of a saint (actually many saints) lasting for hundreds of years without decaying ? How about making a dead body sitting up before a tribunal and testifying for the innocence of the defense (St Anthony)? or maybe a cloak of roses turning into a beautiful portrait of Our Lady (St Juan Diego and Guadulupe)?

There are hundreds of miracles, stories abound with thousands of witnesses, and if you compiled a small percentage of them you would have more testimony than most murder trials that bring back a guilty verdict beyond a reasonable doubt.

Evidence is there, you only have to look for it. God is not as silent or hard to find, as people think. You only need to open your eyes and heart.

It has been reported that even mother Theresa suffered times of extreme loneliness and abandonment and sometimes felt herself to be in a spiritual wilderness.
Some people may be blessed enough to experience Gods presence directly, but for the majority of us, we will continue to pray and love our Lord regardless of our sense of spiritual loneliness, knowing within that He’s there and not expecting that miraculous experience many seem to want.
