One cautionary note, the Gospels are not meant to give us an accurate moment by moment historical account of Jesus of Nazareth.
I don’t think anyone ever accused the bible of being accurate.

What evidence do we have of the apostles dying for their faith?
Peter and Paul were killed in Rome.

Stephen, although not an apostle, was stoned with the approval of Paul.(pre Christian Paul)

We know that John was exiled.

The Bible is a collection of writings by various authors and in a wide range of styles. It is not some sort of historical or scientific treatise as some would portray it. As a practicing Catholic, I recognize faith as both a legacy and as a gift. For me, the Bible is both.

What of the others?
Here’s what I found, which I recognize as unsubstantiated on this site.

However, if you are interested, you can do some research:

Matthew suffered martyrdom in Ethopia, killed by a sword wound.

Mark died in Alexandria, Egypt, dragged by horses through the streets until he was dead.

Luke was hanged in Greece as a result of his tremendous preaching to the lost.

John was boiled in a huge basin of boiling oil during a wave of persecution in Rome. However, he was miraculously delivered from death. John was then sentenced to the mines on the prison island of Patmos where he wrote his prophetic Book of Revelation. The Apostle John was later freed and returned to serve as a bishop in modern Turkey. He died an old man, the only Apostle to die peacefully.

Peter, was crucified upside down on an x-shaped cross, according to Church tradition, because he told his tormentors that he felt unworthy to die the same way that Jesus Christ had died.

James the Just, the leader of the Church in Jerusalem and brother of Jesus, was thrown down more than a hundred feet from the southeast pinnacle of the Temple when he refused to deny his faith in Christ. When they discovered that he survived the fall, his enemies beat James to death with a fuller’s club. This was the same pinnacle where Satan had taken Jesus during the Temptation.

James the Greater, a son of Zebedee, was a fisherman by trade when Jesus called him to a lifetime of ministry. As a strong leader of the Church, James was ultimately beheaded at Jerusalem. The Roman soldier who guarded James watched amazed as James defended his faith at his trial. Later, the officer walked beside James to the place of execution. Overcome by conviction, he declared his new faith to the judge and knelt beside James to accept beheading as a Christian.

Bartholomew, also known as Nathanael, was a missionary to Asia. He witnessed about our Lord in present day Turkey. He was whipped to death for his preaching in Armenia.

Thomas was speared and died on one of his missionary trips to establish the Church in India.

Jude, another brother of Jesus, was killed with arrows after refusing to deny his faith in Christ.

Matthias, the Apostle chosen to replace the traitor Judas Iscariot, was stoned and beheaded.

Barnabas, one of the group of seventy disciples, was stoned to death at Salonica.

Paul was tortured and then beheaded by the evil Emperor Nero at Rome in A.D. 67. Paul endured a lengthy imprisonment which allowed him to write his many epistles to the Churches he had formed throughout the Roman Empire. These letters, which taught many of the foundational doctrines of Christianity, from a large portion of the New Testament.

Well, are you saying that people believe that Jones and Korish have risen from the dead?
Both groups died because they believed the story that was told to them. This is NO different than those christians who have died believing the story that Paul weaved. This is NO different than muslims who have died for their prophet. I do not see why so many use this to claim that Jesus MUST have risen if these people died for him… it is odd. It proves nothing to anyone with a functioning mind. 🤷

You actually believe in the kooky apparent death hypothesis? Scholarship has evolved since the 18th century, you know …
I am unsure what planet you are living on, but there are now even those leaders in your own Catholic church that can see the evidences in front of their face AND they admit to keeping it a secret so as to not lose their position in the church. 🤷 odd, no? Is it true that you all are told that the Church must reveal the Word to you? They were saying that this is done, else all the contradictions would be seen. One other thing that was said is that one MUST not have their mind turned on to think before walking in the doors of the Catholic church. Do any of you read your own Scriptures or do you really obey them that they must reveal it to you. 🙂

Oh heck no I did not watch it!! I am ULTRA empathetic… I cry just reading about in the NT; I cry anytime I hear about some one suffering. What you saw in Mel Gibson’s movie was done to many other Jews and they hung there for days suffering in agony. I am not undermining what Jesus went through… GOD FORBID!!! I am trying to make you realize that He was not the only one. MANY JEWISH PEOPLE were hung on crosses SIMPLY for being Jewish. THINK about what it is you are hoping for… Really think about it.

So many on here “boo hoo” because Jesus died on the cross for their sins… yet only a few people on here (none of whom are Christians) seem to care about all the others that suffered and died up there as well. And when it gets mentioned, the Christians are VERY dismissive. When anyone expresses any hope in their heart that Jesus DID NOT die, but rather lived and lived well, immediately the christians jump in letting me know that they hope he did died. Christians come across as very selfish people ya know. MORE JEWS THAN JUST JESUS DIED!!!

I know… I know… but THEY did not die for your sins. 🤷
Of course we’re sad because of innocent people suffering! We talk about Jesus’ suffering because he was the God of the Universe, and that he died for our sins.

Yes, any death is sad, and we don’t mean to ignore them, but Jesus’ death was one that brought new life.

God Bless.

i know all this, im just wondering why people would think that.
Moslems think it so they can worship god allah and Mohammed. If they accept Jesus as we do, then Mohammed has no meaning or validity.

Atheists think it for a variety of reasons like doubting the eyewitness testimony or a lack of physical proofs today.

Those who point to followers that die for their beliefs like the Branch Davidians or Jim Jones should remember they still have their origin in the Christian belief though they have perverted it.

Uh… don’t you subscribe to the NT? Why would you be pointing me elsewhere? Surely you must be because NONE of this can be validated in the NT. Too many clues point to his still being alive when he was taken down. This may not have been a common thing, but a survival of crucifixion is not impossible according to Josephus who took down one of his friends who survived (and this, from what I remember, after a couple days… Jesus was only up there for 9 hours at the most… the stars are because nine hours is still horrific to me, considering… but if one can survive after a couple of days and MOST suffered on their crosses for a couple to a few days…not to mention the ALOE… well, I am not naive. You may be… but I am not). 😉 By the way, I would be very happy to know that Jesus survived and lived out the rest of his life in a very well off kind of way. I am sad for people to suffer and even more sad at death… especially in such a horrible way as crucifixion.

YOu all are wanting to know that he died so that you can gain something… else, you would be willing to see what is there right in front of you. That is a scary mentality that you possess.
Josephus said this about the survival of the crucifixion:
“And when I was sent by Titus Caesar with Cerealins, and a thousand horsemen, to a certain village called Thecoa, in order to know whether it were a place fit for a camp, as I came back, I saw many captives crucified, and remembered three of them as my former acquaintance. I was very sorry at this in my mind, and went with tears in my eyes to Titus, and told him of them; so he immediately commanded them to be taken down, and to have the greatest care taken of them, in order to their recovery; yet two of them died under the physician’s hands, while the third recovered.”

Even with urgent medical attention, only one survived.

Do you expect me to believe that some Aloe was supposed to heal Jesus wounds?

He had six trials in which he was beaten. He wore a crown of thorns. The purple robe could have additionally torn open his wounds. To quote CARM apologetics on the crucifixion:

“The arms are pulled apart and nails driven through the wrist into a cross beam which is raised in place. This dislocates the shoulders. The nails in the wrists sever the median nerve resulting in a burning pain as well as paralysis in the hand. To breathe Jesus had to press up on the nails in His feet, scraping His raw back on the wood. The body gradually drains of blood causing the heart to beat faster and faster. Dehydration is occurring. The breathing becomes more labored and intense as well as frequent adding to the agony. The blood loss results in extreme thirst as the body craves water to restore the lost blood. Jesus said, “I thirst” (John 19:28). The heart beats so hard trying to compensate for the loss of oxygen (due to the lack of blood) in the body, that it eventually ruptures. At this point the chest cavity fills with fluid. The soldier pierced Jesus’ side and out came blood and water, signifying that the heart had stopped beating and the blood was settling in the chest cavity. Jesus was dead.”

In his burial, Jesus had to be very tightly wrapped. (Even when Lazurus rose, he had to be helped out of his burial clothes -John 12:44)

And what of the massive stone and the guards? There were rumors that the disciples would come and steal the corpse. In Roman society, if the guard’s prisoner escaped, the guard would have to take the place of the prisoner!

If you consider the horrible crucifixion, the extreme rarity that anyone would ever survive the crucifixion, and the fact that the Romans had to make sure Jesus was dead, you must come to your senses. Sorry, but considering the fact that you’re saying someone can survive a crucifixion with some aloe and then appear alive again, getting past guards, I’d say you’re the one who is being naive, and that your mentality is scary.

God Bless.

Has at least ONE person that we know of survived crucifixion? You answered yes and then even posted up the account of it. I am not mystical in thinking and thus, if the tomb of Jesus was empty… then there is the explanation. He did not die, but lived. You act as if it is impossible right after you show account of it being QUITE possible. 🤷

I cannot believe that you actually hold to the apparent death hypothesis, which has been totally relinquished by scholarly sceptics.

Josephus wrote that, of three men who were prematurely descended from the cross and treated by the Emperor’s own physicians (ie, the Empire’s best), only one survived. There is ample reason to acknowledge, in the light of modern medical science, that Jesus could absolutely not have survived the Crucifixion (I refer you to the contribution of Alexander Metherell, MD, PhD, to Lee Strobel’s book The Case for Christ); but even if He had, “it is impossible,” as David Strauss wrote, “that a being half-dead out of the sepulchre, who crept about weak and ill, wanting medical treatment … could have given to the disciples the impression that he was the Conqueror over death and the grave, the Prince of Life. … Such a resuscitation could only have weakened the impression… [and] could by no possibility have changed their sorrow into enthusiasm, have elevated their reverence into worship.”

I recall a few years back, on one of the anniversaries of Watergate, Charles Colson was asked what he thought was the most important lesson from that event. He said he wante to say that it proved Jesus rose from the dead.

He noted that a few days after the event he was at breakfast with a number of the most important and powerful men in government agreeing on how to contain the problem. Within a week or so they were each trying to work a deal for themselves with the prosecutors.

He maintained that if these men could not maintain a conspiracy for a month there is no way 12 simple fishermen could maintain such a conspiracy to their death.
And for the next couple mellinia.

Also, one has to remember that the Romans were expert at killing people and ensuring they remained dead.

Quite possible? There was at the VERY most a 1 in 3 chance that Jesus would survive, even if he had gotten urgent medical attention, which he did not. Like I said, survival from crucifixion was an extreme rarity.

We even have the details of Jesus’ crucifixion. Judging by what we know from that certain crucifixion, there is no possible way he could have survived, let alone make his way out of the tomb.

The “swoon theory” as it’s called is an old favorite of skeptics. But it has been refuted many times.

God Bless.

May the beliefs of heresies and conspiroucy theories be cleansed away with the blood of the myrtors.

Jesus Christ, shine through us all!

God Bless everyone.

one survived.
👍 ONE survived. That is evidence enough that it IS possible for one to survive crucifixion. Joseph of Arimathea was a wealthy man so we can not say for sure that there was not someone brought in under cover to help aid in the recovery. ALOE: HULLO!!! 🤷 It is not like I am basing this on absolutely no evidences. OPEN YOUR EYES!!! The resurrection story of a godman is Hellenistic; it originated in Egypt, was adopted by Greece and absorbed by the Romans: TA-DA! Up springs the Roman Catholic Church. There IS a reason they do not want you to know the Scriptures. YOu have minds… USE THEM!!! 😊

Jesus died at cross…died
Well, why believe this version of the sungod story and not the one of Horus or Mithra or Krishna? They all died the same way, were buried, and were resurrected on the 3rd day. Do you think that those who believe(d) such stories were erring in their faiths? If you answer yes, then you have to admit that you are too. If you answer no, than how do you decide which godman to believe? the stories that must be believed are ALIKE!

.
I promise… resurrection from the dead after 3 days is even more rare. You are willing to believe that and not the more logical explanation? You cannot use the rare card, when you are buying into one of the oldest mythological stories that have existed since the “dawning” of mankind. 🤷
