Deuteronomy 21:22-23, regarding he who is hanged upon a tree is cursed.

Muslims and some Jews will use it against Christians.

This caught Evangelical David Wood flat footed in debate.

How do we respond?

Isaiah 53
Psalm 22 and

Galatians 3:10-14 Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition (DRA)

10 For as many as are of the works of the law, are under a curse. For it is written: Cursed is every one, that abideth not in all things, which are written in the book of the law to do them.

11 But that in the law no man is justified with God, it is manifest: because the just man liveth by faith.

12 But the law is not of faith: but, He that doth those things, shall live in them.

13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written: Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Christ Jesus: that we may receive the promise of the Spirit by faith.

It’s not so much the crucifixion per se, but rather the Jewish belief that the Messiah is supposed to accomplish all he was sent to accomplish the first time around. Also, for Jews, the Messiah is not divine.

Firstly, Jesus was buried on the same day of his crucifixion as was required by what is written in the Book of Deuteronomy.

Christ has freed us from being cursed in this way by his own being made a curse, as it says in Galatians 3: 13. Another poster has already cited this scripture.

By the law of Moses, the touch of a dead body was defiling, therefore dead bodies must not be left hanging, as that would defile the land. It is not about being the Messiah or not.

Hi, meltzerboy. I was wondering, what all is the Messiah supposed to accomplish?

It fits perfect with chirstian thoelogy since jesus became a cursé for us

God made him who knew no sin to become sin for us .

The Messiah is to accomplish three things. One is the ingathering of the Jewish tribes to Israel. The second is the intensive study and practice of the Torah, more so than ever before. And the third is the realization by all the nations of the world that the G-d of Israel is the only one true G-d. That does not mean everyone must become Jewish, but everyone does follow the precepts of ethical life including no longer waging war and living in peace with Israel and one another. This, according to Jewish teaching, is the mission of the Messiah.

Thank you. And so it’s strictly an earthly accomplishment, with no eschatological or afterlife implications?

That is correct. The afterlife is in G-d’s hands, not the Messiah’s. Our purpose on earth is to make the world a better place for everyone by means of our behavior and with the help of G-d, and to praise G-d for our many blessings.

Thank you. And those are pretty much the agreed upon positions among Orthodox Jews?

From my experience, yes. The messiah was never envisioned as divine nor coming a second time nor dying for any redemption of others. These are all Christian definitions of the role of the messiah which is why Judaism was so resistant to Jesus as the messiah.

Mr, Wood, being Evangelical, is not in possession of the entirety of God’s revealed truth. As such, he will be hamstrung in certain debates.
  1. Jesus bore the curse of our sin - but being absolutely innocent and having both human and divine natures, was not accursed. Why was He, without sin and not in need of repentance, baptized? Same thing. The effects of the hypostatic union, the self-sacrifice out of love for the sake of all humanity.
  2. Read the Wisdom of Solomon (which Mr. Wood does not have), Chapter 2, verses 10-20. Written as few as 50 years before the Incarnation, it is a summary of Christ’s life and death - a prophecy soon thereafter fulfilled, if you will.
  3. The accursed; the guilty who had transgressed the Mosaic Law descended into the pit and remained there. Christ descended, preached the Gospel and rose again - the greatest event in human history.
