If Mary was the mother of God...

When they say “bearer” they meant, “one who carried God in her womb and gave birth to him.”

The English word which most aptly expresses this is “mother”.
“Mother” is not the emphasis of the term theotokos: “God-bearer.” As I said previously, the Council did not convene to define the motherhood of Mary (it wasn’t at all about Mary), but to confirm the divinity of the Person she bore. Cross that line and you introduce error. Alas, that line was crossed.

“Mother of God” is equally all about the divinity of the Son. If it was in any fashion about Mary then it would’ve been much easier to go for a simple ‘Mother of Jesus’, which would achieve the purpose of glorifying Mary equally well - after all, no-one argues that she WAS his mother, apart from a few numbskulls who seem to think He was conceived in a test-tube or something. 🤷 What they argue about, and the crux of the problem with the title, is HIS nature.

Some at the Council in fact argued that Mary be called the more palatable ‘Christotokos’ instead of ‘Theotokos’, so you can’t say ‘Theotokos’ is less controversial than ‘Mother of God’. To those who were there at the time it certainly wasn’t.

Christokos: “Messiah-bearer,” would not have defined His Deity. The Council did not convene to determine His Messiahship, but His Deity.

AND it convened to determine the nature of Mary’s relationship His divine and human natures as well, which also went along with settling the question of His nature.

She was obviously pretty important in her own right to these early Christians. Otherwise why bother to issue dogma on the question of how to describe her? Why not restrict themselves to saying ‘Yes, HE was God and not just a nice bloke, or even Messiah’.

Andrew,

Thirdly, something that is not specifically said but yet believed is called extrapolation. Its certainly not obedience. People of our time call them smart alecs.
Well, brother. Do you believe that the Holy Spirit is God? If so, please show me the verse in the bible.

With all this discussions, I wonder what would Jesus do to those who insult the Virgin Mary. Jesus being the perperfect follower of the 10 commandments surely gave honor to His mother and yet some people continue ti dishonor her. Insulting Mary surely means insulting Jesus Christ. I don’t know why they can’t see this logic.

You call THIS insulting Mary ?

**Luke 1:38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. **

If bearer means mother, I’d be the mother of my wallet, mother of my watch, mother of my handphone. 🙂
Hi Rumpelstiltskin, the meaning of your name - dwarf of German folklore who spins flax into gold (Grimm). A name aptly describing your dispute on this forum. 🤷

a dwarf in one of the fairy stories of the brothers Grimm; tells a woman he will not hold her to a promise if she can guess his name and when she discovers it he is so furious that he destroys himself

Please don’t do that to yourself - the bible says of certain people

14 So they make Isaiah’s prophecy come true:

‘You will hear clearly but never understand.
You will see clearly but never comprehend.
15 These people have become close-minded
and hard of hearing.
They have shut their eyes
so that their eyes never see.
Their ears never hear.
Their minds never understand.
And they never return to me for healing!’

Instead let it be said…

16 “Blessed are your eyes because they see and your ears because they hear. 17 I can guarantee this truth: Many prophets and many of God’s people longed to see what you see but didn’t see it, to hear what you hear but didn’t hear it.
Matt 13:14-17 (GW)

just to be nit picky

this is not my name Andrew
Andrew is my son
who I bore & who is not divine or a handphone,.lol
that is probably smart alec 😛

Seriously, I think this one might as well end because no matter how many ways people say the same thing, you say the same thing back. Its going in circles. You made your point that we dont agree with & we have made our points that you dont agree with. I cant see any logic in continuing the circle.

I still dont understand what the issue is & Im sure you are probably frustrated at us for not getting it. Sorry, Ive been trying to understand your logic, but the familial relationships you are talking about are different in terms of God. So I guess we agree to disagree

Personally, I think the employment of the word (theotokos) is unfortunate. Nevertheless, it was originally meant to confirm the Deity of the Child. Men have corrupted it by putting the emphasis on the woman; the cause of all the extrabiblical Marian doctrines introduced into Christianity by men (“leaven”).

It does not honor a person by saying things about them that are not true. Even if those things seem “good.”

It’s a separation of His two natures. The hypostatic union is a greater mystery than you’re willing to accept.
You are not espousing the hypostatic union. You are espousing Nestorianism. You said that the man Jesus Christ did not exist at a point in time, while the second person of the Trinity did. That is Nestorianism. You’ve separated the person into two people, one divine, and one human, and asserted that Mary is only the mother of the human part.

The person Jesus Christ has always existed. He added humanity to his divinity without confusion. Hence, even though he was God, he he became human. Because he is divine, it was and is and always will be appropriate to call him God. Therefore, Mary is the Mother of God.

When you deny her that title, you’ve become a Nestorian.

Actually, I said just the opposite. The MAN Christ Jesus came into existence at a certain point of time, via the incarnation. Whereas the Second Person of the Trinity, God the Son, transcends time, being eternal. No “man” spoke the universe into existence.
That is Nestorianism.
No it isn’t. But what you’re espousing is a form of Monothelitism, that the human and divine natures in Christ were fused together.
You’ve separated the person into two people, one divine, and one human, and asserted that Mary is only the mother of the human part.
The Council of Chalcedon declared that Christ had two natures. The Council of Constantinople declared that He had two wills, his human will being subject to His divine will. As for Mary, she had nothing at all to do with His Divine nature. She cannot be the “mother of God.”
The person Jesus Christ has always existed.
Scripture states differently:Luke 1:31 “And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus.”

John 1:1-2 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God…And the Word became flesh,”
He added humanity to his divinity without confusion.
He did not “add” humanity to His divinity, nor was Divinity “added” to His humanity. The two natures were not blended. He was “fully” human and “fully” Divine.
When you deny her that title, you’ve become a Nestorian.
When you attribute that title to her you corrupt what the Council of Ephesus originally intended by the term: “God-bearer.”

Luke 1:38 "I am the Lord’s servant," Mary answered.

Being servant of god and mother of god are different issues; they are not connected.

You can be slave of a future emperor and still be the father of that emperor.

The one who who started this thread is being ridiculous

and God is your Father, does that not make Mary your GRAND MOTHER ???

Serious answers only please.
:confused::(:mad::rolleyes:

Is that serious enough?

Well anyway, what I would like to say is just because you have no belief in what we believe you dont have to show so much saracasm

Lily, you must realise that this is a fully legitimate question.

The argument should be consistent throughout. Since Catholics claim so, that if Jesus is God and Mary gave physical birth to Him, therefore Mary is the mother of God. Then likewise, since you claim that God is your Father, then Mary MUST be your Grandmother.

This is an undeniable conclusion that has to be drawn if we go by the SAME queer logic that you have used in calling Mary as the mother of God.

.
I am curious of the queer logic behind Mary being our grandmother. :whacky: where are you going with this?
