WE went back to eating no meat on Fri, a few years ago…WE just talked it over after lent was finished and decided if we could manage to not eat meat for 6 weeks running, we didn’t really need to resume our sort of slothful ways…😃

We just stopped eating meat on all Fri’s and we really don’t miss it…It is a small act of penance that is easy to do…Has it benefited us spiritually? I think it has, but I am certainly not claiming sainthood…I think the old disciplines that got tossed into a corner did serve a purpose…It makes me mindful I need to be more thankful, and humbly accept my cross

I thought would be an issue for me. However, after witnessing my friend going from lapsed Jew to strict Orthodox (e.g. no electricity during Shabbos), it stirred me to be dedicated to my religious obligations. In fact, I think it will help me be much more cognitive of my Catholic faith.

I like the idea. Every Friday from 12:00 noon till 3:00pm I need to contemplate the cost of my sin.

peace

Since all Catholics are already obligated to do penance on Friday, with the abstinence from meat being the preferred means to do so, the question is really “How would you feel about abstaining meat INSTEAD of the other Friday penance you do?”

You do penance on Friday right? It is an obligation.

I think all of us are fully aware we are required to do a penance on Fri, but the Bishops in England and Wales have mandated meatless Fri…It might spread …I have no idea

I started abstaining from meat on Fridays several years ago. I plan to keep on.

I do penance every day. In a special way today(Friday).Thank you.

peace

It wouldn’t bother me I abstain from meat on all Fridays during the year anyway.

I would be okay with it. I need to trim my diet down anyway. But this way… I would do it in order to serve the Lord.

I did not know this until several years ago. I don’t think the change was well “publicized” or discussed. Many, many people think it was just dropped. I was born in 1962; lots of folks my age have no idea.

Wouldn’t make a dent. My RCIA training was a little ‘gappy’ and I thought you always had to abstain on Fridays.

It wasn’t till a year or so ago that I discovered you could do an alternate penance. We take advantage of this if eating fish or eggplant would mean throwing out expensive leftovers or we got invited somewhere or the like.

When i returned i was tol that it wasn’t necessary to abstain on fridays. But i choose to do so as a small act of penance. Fish fridays i like fish, so not much penace on my part but more so for the rest of the family which doesn’t care for fish.

Ditto.

I know of almost no lay Catholics that think this is necessary. Regardless of age.

My husband and I went to meatless Fridays only about a year ago (as soon as we discovered this need), and we love it! Haven’t looked back. I think we’re finally getting the hang of it too.

I asked my mom about it (who is admittedly slightly addled) and she just frowned and said “Oh they got rid of that years ago”.

~sigh~

For those of you in the know, can you give the specific reference to this fasting requirement so I can help enlighten my fellow parishioners?

Thanks tons & please don’t judge those of us that were simply never told. K?

Sometimes during Lent I eat something I really hate , as an extra sacrifice…I don’t mind fish , but I hate cheese , so I would eat Mac and cheese on Fri

I already decided to go to meatless Fridays all year round some time ago. I hate fish so it’s a penance all right. I like the idea because it is a kind of unifying gesture for MOST people. It brings back early childhood memories when ‘every’ Catholic round the world was sitting down on Friday to mac and cheese, scrambled eggs, tuna or fish icks --I mean sticks-- back when food was quite a bit simpler and a lot cheaper.

I do penance every day. I would be in favor of adding the obligation to avoid meats on Fridays. The more penance, the better! That’s what I always say.

Any penitential act can be substituted…it might be prayers, or alms giving, or doing a good deed and not telling anyone you did…There are lots of ways to do an act of penance

Give up a TV show you enjoy, read scripture…the choice is yours

Fabulous idea.

It would, at least, get people to thinking.

and it would serve additional notice that the Catholic Church is special.

I like fish, in many forms; I like mushroom in many forms, I like cheese on pasta, and many other kinds of pasta, been, peas, lens. Tonight my supper will be fried grits.
