If Muslims believe Mary had no sin, why don't Protestants for the most part

Good afternoon. 🙂 I hope you’re well.

Perhaps it was you. Forgive me for not remembering. If you have a list of these “over 500 verses” I would appreciate it. If you like you can send it to me by PM or email if there is no link available onilne. I am somewhat skeptical about your claim, but I would like to investigate it anyway. However, even 500 verses, if that’s really true, would still be only a small percentage of the Qur’an.

I could debate about the OT sure, and the point would not be to show that Christians should massacre competing tribes as was commanded of the Israelites, but that sort of debate would demonstrate, I hope, that violence has been commanded by God in the past, with reasons sometimes known only to God. My position as a Muslim, however, is that “peace and love” does not necessarily violate the commandments in the Qur’an.

Thank you for including that in the thread. The story of Mary appears other times in the Qur’an, however, and she is mentioned even more times without the story being told, so it’s possible that such a mention appears elsewhere, though I’m not aware of it. I’m not aware of any teaching of that in the Qur’an or in the Hadith but surely the poster heard it from somewhere, and I would just like to investigate it if I can, to know for sure.

Take care. 🙂
Sister Amy, you read the Quran all the time so you must know that it promotes plenty of violence against others! Does that not bother you? You find that beautiful and uplifting?

from what I gather it seems she thinks it promotes peace.

You’re right, I do read the Qur’an “all the time” (try for every day at least, if that’s what you mean by “all the time”) but I haven’t seemed to notice that it promotes all this violence.

I keep reading about praying and charity, paradise and hellfire, and God’s mercy all the time. 🤷

I believe the OP asked why Protestants don’t believe that Mary had no sin–not asked for the Inquisition of Sister Amy. . . ?

Muslims believe Mary had no sin?

Interesting.

Anyway, Muslims derive their beliefs from the Qur’an and teachings of Muhammad. That’s why Muslims believe whatever it is they believe.

Protestants derive their beliefs from other sources.
Christians that belong to a Protestant (i.e. non-catholic) church derive (or should derive) their beliefs from the Bible. There is no “other” source of the teachings of Christ.

Yes but sister Amy,

Please tell us how the Koran proves what you believe and please tell us of the evidence that The Koran is right.

We have The Dead Sea Scrolls and first century manuscripts. All the original copies of The Koran got burnt.

I’ve also read The Koran. All it did was make me want to thank God more for being a Christian.

On another note,

I like that flag you’ve got there. Freedom for Palistine!

That’s fine. Do you know where you heard that Muslims believe Mary had no sin? If you could perhaps direct me to an article or video or something, that might help.
I’m not muslim or an expert but this may be the verse that is referenced.
“The Messiah (Jesus), son of Mary, was no more than a Messenger before whom many Messengers have passed away; and his mother adhered wholly to truthfulness, and they both ate food (as other mortals do). See how We make Our signs clear to them; and see where they are turning away!” (Quran 5:75).

I’m not convinced that this means that muslims believe that mary was without sin. You would have to know where the original translation came from.

It is my view that the Qur’an proves itself, rather than that I prove the Qur’an. My base assumption is that the Qur’an is from God, and it is the basis for my beliefs. Very much more than that would be beyond the scope of this thread, I’d imagine.

The Qur’an is not a book, or a manuscript. The meaning of the word is recitation–and it has been memorized by countless Muslims over the centuries. I can count several people among my own acquaintance who have memorized the entire thing. If every text of the Qur’an were to disappear this instant, it would still be preserved down to every last letter, as it has been since Muhammad was still alive. It wasn’t even compiled into a single volume (after all, why would that be necessary with everyone memorizing it?) until after Muhammad had died. That happened within two years, and that first compilation was then copied. The original volume was destroyed, but there are some manuscripts believed to be part of that first set of copies. Yet while scribes make mistakes, a hafidh does not, so still the preservation is not so much in text as in memory.

Indeed. 🙂

Thanks. May Allah strengthen those who are suffering hardship and purify them, and may He establish peace and justice over oppression and war.

This is really a beautiful passage, thanks for bringing it up. The word in Arabic is sadeeqah, for Mary, which basically means that she was true or truthful. It doesn’t mean that she is without sin, as there are other descriptions of people in the Qur’an who are the sadaqeen or truthful. (ps, my i’rab might be wrong… if I’m mistaken please forgive me)

Not really, no.
than what is Islam supposed to be all about(the Religion)? What does it promote, if it doesn’t promote violence or peace. These stories I have been reading in a version I d/l seem to far fetched to be of any truth

Sorry but I’m not sure exactly what you’ve been reading.

Islam is all about submitting to God’s will by believing in Him and the Last Day and following the Messengers and Revelation which He has sent.

Hello,

May be i can help,

The verse that people are refering to does exist in the Quran. But it doesnt explicitly say that mary was sinless. It however say that she was granted a special immunity from satan , she and her son.

Mary’s mother prayed to God as soon as she delivered mary and asked God to protect her and her offspring from satan whispers.

Sin can come from other sources than satan, like ones own whispers and weeknesses.

Please also note that sinless doesnt equal Holy in Islam. Forexample the angels are sinless however they are gods creatures. Just like us humans.

Mary in islam however is the best woman to walk on earth. In terms of piety and obedience to God.

best regards,

Meedo

Salaam Meedo

If you don’t mind my pointing it out, the statement about Mary not being touched by Satan is a hadith, and not an ayah. A mere technicality perhaps, but to say something is in the Qur’an which in fact is not kind of rubs me the wrong way. So I just wanted to clear that up.

Hello sister Amy,

Thank you for your note. yes ofcourse it is a hadeeth , but the hadeeth is generally linked as an interpretation of the below verse .

That doesnt mean that the Quran say Mary is sinless . i didn’t even say so . Satan doesnt only cause sins, he causes forgetfulness , distress , etc… . and sins can come from other sources too , like one’s own weak soul .

I just wanted to provide the verse that is behind teh hadeeth that is probably the background behind the opening post.

YUSUFALI: When she was delivered, she said: “O my Lord! Behold! I am delivered of a female child!”- and Allah knew best what she brought forth- “And no wise is the male Like the female. I have named her Mary,** and I commend her and her offspring to Thy protection from the Evil One, the Rejected.” **
PICKTHAL: And when she was delivered she said: My Lord! Lo! I am delivered of a female - Allah knew best of what she was delivered - the male is not as the female; and lo! I have named her Mary, and lo! I crave Thy protection for her and for her offspring from Satan the outcast. **
SHAKIR: So when she brought forth, she said: My Lord! Surely I have brought it forth a female-- and Allah knew best what she brought forth-- and the male is not like the female, and I have named it Marium, and I
commend her and her offspring into Thy protection from the accursed Shaitan. **
