If a child asked: Why did Jesus have to suffer?,
How would you answer in a simple explanation?

I think…I would say that he chose to suffer as opposed to had to.

Because He really didn’t HAVE to suffer at all.

But because He suffered we have someone to turn to when we suffer. We know for a fact that God knows firsthand what it means to suffer. So when we suffer and turn to God, we can be sure that God knows, not just that we suffer, but what suffering actually feels like.

I mean…depends on the age of the child but something along those lines.

I would say He died because that was the only way to open the Gates of Heaven, and God loves us so very much that He wanted us to be able to join Him there.

Children often don’t need as full explanations as adults do.

I would say that Jesus did not have to suffer, He chose to suffer and those who made him suffer did so because of original sin and their not recognizing Him as God.

He chose to suffer to make up to God for all the sins that people did and all that they would do (many children can’t grasp “sacrifice” any other way) because you can’t get into Heaven with a mortal sin on your soul.

God made us to love, to choose the real good over whatever who-knows-what we decide to choose for ourselves, instead. People choose not to love, starting with the very first two, Adam and Eve. They chose to decide what they wanted, instead, to act as if they know better than that. Whenever people do that, people suffer–the people who don’t love and the people they don’t love, both suffer.

God chose to become one of us and to take on that suffering that we chose for ourselves so that we could choose to live like God does. We are made to live forever with God in heaven, but until we learn to love as God loves and learn to trust in God’s sight over our own way, there isn’t anywhere in the universe that can be Heaven for us. That’s because we’re made to love, and if we don’t love as God loves, we cannot be happy. So I guess you could say that Jesus chose to come, even though that means suffering the suffering we chose for ourselves, so that we could have the love God intended for us, instead, and really truly be happy with God. That is what God wants for us: to know him, to love him, and to be happy with Him forever. That’s all about love.

And that is what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.
