DISCLAIMER: Don’t get me wrong, I believe it is altogether impossible that the Church would allow contraception since truth never changes. I would just like to present the famous-hyptothetical “what if” question and see what the response would be…

I would remain Catholic and continue to use NFP.
But what would this do to the belief of an infallible Church? And a Church instituted by God?

Go for an impeachment, because this teaching can never change. This is Christ’s church, not ours

That’s why this won’t happen.

You said hypothetically speaking. It’s not against church teaching to use NFP (for sufficient reason). Even if contraception became ok (which we know won’t happen) it is still perfectly acceptable to continue using NFP.

Yes, and hypthetically speaking, if it did happen it would imply that there is not an infallible Church… Thus, hypothetically speaking, what would you do? Accept that the Church is indeed not infallible, but still accept it is God’s Church… just not infallible? Or would you be agnostic? Or… ???

If it did, than I would know that the Antichrist has influenced the Church. I’d fight for real Truth in the Church.

I’m probably going to flamed here… but if the Church said contraception was OK - I’d be glad. I am very happy with 5 children and hope not to have any more. Can’t afford it - getting too old - a variety of reasons. But so long as the Church says no - then no it is.

And I do not believe the Church will ever say contraception is OK.

From my studies NFP is more effective than contraception…
Besides this many forms of contraception cause cancer.
Finally, many forms induce abortion…

Why would you want this? NFP is natural, safe, and faithful…
I am getting married soon and have been taking NFP courses…
It is what we’ll be using for only serious reasons of course. I’m looking forward to a large family 🙂

Depends.

I could accept the church deciding non-abortifacient contraception is ok, but I couldn’t get to grips with allowing contraception like the pill or the IUD.

So in the first instance, no problems here, in the second instance, I honestly don’t know what I’d do. I’d be confused. It just wouldn’t be the Catholic Church anymore.

 Would at this point in my life question “who” the change came from. I would still tell others to follow the “centuries” old teaching of being open to life. If we Catholics were having children like we were ment to have them the world would be mostly Catholic and there would not be the specter of an Islamic world.:banghead:

You might feel different after you have a few children ;-). I’m not saying you will but I have noticed a lot of people seem to follow church teaching on this matter until they get to the fourth or fifth child and then put it in the ‘too hard’ basket.

I wish you a long and happy marriage with the large family you desire 🙂

They probably weren’t following NFP to the letter. A lot of people fault NFP but they don’t follow it strictly. They get sloppy with temp taking, try to cut corners between phase I and phase II or phase II and phase III, or avoid the stricter rules of coitus for phase I.

Finally, I wouldn’t feel any different that NFP is safe and faithful 😉

I am going to agree with you. My mom is a nurse and often jokes “What do you call a couple practicing NFP? Parents”.
I have so many problems with pregnancy, I dread the entire nine months. I will be grateful for every child that God gives us, but pregnancy is the most miserable experience I have ever endured ( and I have endured alot). I will continue to have babies, but please pray that my pregnancies are better–then maybe I’ll be a fan on NFP.

What I meant is that a lot of people I’ve observed decide they can’t handle anymore children after four or five. For most it seems to be four, others ‘crack’ at five.

Not saying you, or even I, feel that way, as I’d love more children but unfortunately, circumstances make that unlikely. Just making an observation.

Anyway - my original point was supposed to be that I could never accept the church allowing abortifacient birth control. (BTW - my understanding is that this teaching is no infallible?).

I would become a bear and go into hibernation. I’m serious. There is no obvious, rational response given my current worldview.

My goodness…you sound like an expert. I think it’'s wonderful to “want” a large family. But in this day and age that might not be practical. No offense, but wait until you have 3 or 4, you might feel differently.

I find this hard to believe. We have more money and luxuries in this day and age than ever before.

I know two families with 12 kids each and they’re perfectly happy and incredibly organized. Everyone pitches in. They’re all homeschooled too.

My grandpa had 15 brothers and sisters, and their parents were immigrants who started out with nothing. They did just fine. They have nothing but fond memories.
