If the Crystal Cathedral becomes Catholic

It might be difficult to rename the church, especially if there are lease-back provisions included in the offer to purchase the building.

I suspect the name “Crystal Cathedral” and “Crystal Cathedral Ministries” are trademarked. Unless the name was purchased, gifted or abandoned, it probably couldn’t be used. Given that CCM is supposidly going to be a continuing ministry, that might make things difficult indeed.

Tourists certainly would be distracting. A lot of Churches, such as those in Rome, have signs asking for silence. But that rarely stops people from talking. One can’t blame the tourists (pilgrims are a different matter), because they do not necessarily understand what’s going on.

You’re offering your opinion as if it were fact. Just because some churches fail does not mean all fail in controlling those who enter it just to take a look. I have been into silent churches that attracted visitors. It’s a fairly awesome thing.

In the case of the Crystal Cathedral, once it was outfitted for Mass, it might be nice to have the Blessed Sacrament exposed in an amazing monstrance outside of Mass. My father was a huge fan of Norman Vincent Peale and desperately wanted to donate the cash to have his name on one of the crystals. We did not have that kind of money.

The whole thing turning Catholic probably has my dad and many other dearly departed fans turning over in their graves. Peale himself is probably doing somersaults.

It should be named something like “The Holy Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Adoration of the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist” or something like that.

I’m thiniking they should get one of those three foot wide monstances like they have at the abbey near EWTN in Alabama. 24 hour adoration and you don’t even have to be inside!

I cannot think of a better way to evangelize – to have people come into close proximity with the Blessed Sacrament. Just because some cathedrals have hidden the Blessed Sacrament does not make it a good solution. Certainly not a solution that is to be replicated.

Retaining the name “Crystal Cathedral” would be best for numerous reasons but I doubt that it would ultimately be doable for legal reasons. If it were indeed not possible I think I would name it something that look into consideration the history of the area, probably in Spanish (far more Spanish speaking Catholics in OC than English speaking.) Possibly Something like San Salvidore.

I think a giant/tasteful monstance (not at all like that monstrosity in Hanceville) would be a wonderful thing. 24 hour adoration (except for Mass times) is also a great idea. I would set the bar very, very high from the beginning (or at least what we Catholics consider to be high.) What some people now view as being impossible (ex. quiet/courteous behavior in church) should be the norm from the outset.

Having adoration like that would also be an excellent reason to require people to be quiet and respectful.

Absolutely, and good for them. Their contracting Spanish-speaking pastor really packs them in – far, far more than the two Anglo services combined.

It would be interesting to see how many Masses the Diocese would have every Sunday if they procured the campus. Our Lady of the Angels some 30 miles to the north often draws over 2,000 for the 10:00 Sunday Mass.

Well yes I did stop praying to direct them to confession. Of course I had to start over which is not necessarily a bad thing.

Interesting thread. I visited the CCM Campus last Saturday for a good look-see. The campus feels much larger than I expected. There is a great deal of parking. You can tell that CCM is broke. The exterior of the campus is in need of grounds keeping, window washing, general janitorial work, some painting and some of the fountains and reflecting pools clearly need to be repaired. The mood of the employees is very somber.

The cathedral itself is an interesting place. It is by no means opulent. It too shows signs of deferred maintenance. It does not have an awesome feel to it, more like a big commerical atrium. It’s feels very 1970’s kitschy yet cool. In reality it would take very, very little to prepare it for the Mass. In fact back when they had a full crew, I suspect it could have been prepared for the (temporary) celebration of the Mass within a week. If the diocese of OC wins the bidding contest they need to be very careful about what they do to “convert” it for the celebration of the Mass. If it’s done carefully, with good taste then I’m sure it would do just fine. It it was done with poor taste, it would be akin to someone putting 20" rims with spinners on an old pick-up.
