If the Eucharist is truly Jesus

I recall this, but did anybody who came to Jesus for healing not be healed?

Is there an instance of someone with great faith saying “I will go to Jesus and he will heal me”…then once they arrived, nothing happened at all?

I was so glad when the new translation of the Mass was changed from “Just say the word and I shall be healed.” to “Just say the word and my soul shall be healed.”

We are alive and to be alive means recognizing that illness and death are simply a part of the the mystery of life. We can not understand God’s purpose for our lives. I personally have been touched by the courageous lives of people who have suffered physically. Their souls have been healed and so they have been able to teach the rest of us how to suffer and give of themselves for others.

Trust in God. God’s purpose for each one of us may not be our idea but in the long run it will lead to a greater glory.

The church was never meant for me.

If the Messiah were to come and establish a visible, perpetual, universal congregation, how could anyone affirm that this congregation was never meant for him? And even if this were true, it would be undeniable that every single man and woman was meant for it.

I wanted to post something from the latest newsletter of the Daughters of St. Paul which, happily, touches specifically on the topic of this thread!

We depend on miracles!

Then suddenly a woman who had been suffering from hemorrhages for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his cloak, for she said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be made well.” Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, “Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And instantly the woman was made well (Mt 9:20–22).
This unnamed woman who approaches Jesus with her need symbolizes each of us. We too are totally dependent on miracles. We can’t heal ourselves. We can’t fix our problems. Just like this woman, we seek help from doctors and experts in so many areas—medicine, psychology, science, physics, strategic planning, government, law, education, time management, and the list goes on. Each has their place. Each contributes something wonderful to the development of this world. But in the end, we must approach God as the ultimate power of love which alone can sustain our existence. Our existence rests on the hands of grace. Of ourselves we can only really receive life and give thanks for it as a continuous gift. Our most authentic posture as a part of God’s creation is that of this woman suffering from hemorrhages: “If only I can touch him, I shall be saved.” It is her faith, her courage, her determination, her risk to show her need, her desire for health, and her realization of God’s infinite superiority over the world that we must claim for our own if we are to receive, like her, true healing and life.

When we read the Gospels, it is evident that people were healed when they touched Jesus.

For example the woman who simply touched the hem of his garment was made well…

Why doesn’t the Eucharist which is ‘body, blood, soul and divinity’ of Jesus heal sick people?

I have witnessed several people ‘touch’ Jesus ask for healing and not be healed.

How could someone actually hold the body of God in their hand and not be made well of some silly little disease?

Now, I understand that people can’t be healed of everything that comes to them every time or they would live forever and never humanly die.

To me this points more to a symbolic presence because symbolic presences do not heal either.

My faith in the Eucharist is weakening, due to not healing people who are begging God to heal them. Also people can’t receive Jesus body because they are ‘allergic’ to it…and I understand that in this case they are allergic to the ‘accidents’ that remain…

Tell me where I am wrong…

The problem is the vast majority of people are not properly disposed to receive communion. Whether that be lacking in preparation prior to receiving (ie: receiving in vain, out of habit, out of human respect, receiving distracted, etc), receiving in the state of mortal sin, not actually believing that they are receiving the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus, etc. The Eucharist received only once has the power to turn a properly disposed person into a saint and to move mountains. The problem isn’t with the Blessed Sacrament. The problem is with us. Those who touched Jesus and were healed really truly believed in him. There have and still are people who are healed through the Blessed Sacrament. It is through their faith and proper disposition that this is so.

And again, I never said that he was bringing ‘universal’ healing. I even pointed out that I knew that everybody couldn’t be healed because that would mean people would live forever, if they were healed every time they got sick. However, I said I would like to just see one person, in a wheelchair, or an amputee, grow back a leg or something…

It appears in 1 Corinthians chapter 11:30…that some people have even died for receiving unworthily…I am not exactly sure why ‘some’ die but others abuse the Eucharist and live jolly old lives…thats another concern…it appears in that verse to effect us ‘bodily’…surely if it can kill us bodily, it would be able to heal us bodily as well…

“You believe because you have seen. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believed.”

It is a matter of trust and belief. Of course, it would be great if the Eucharist can cure terrible diseases like cancer and AIDs. But we believe we are both body and spirit. The Eucharist is spiritual food for the journey. We are all weak. Without Christ, we cannot overcome temptation. We cannot fight against the Devil, the prince of lies, the great deceiver. Yes, we can be fine physically, mentally and emotionally, but what of our spirit? Our spirit may be in pieces. The only one who can mend us is Jesus. Some people cry after receiving the Eucharist, or when they are in front of the Blessed Sacrament. They feel uplifted, they feel that God has touched them or relieved their burden. It is very real and beautiful.

But I dare not doubt the Real Presence. In the past, God allowed miracles to happen so that people will believe- read the miracle of Lanciano. The priest did not believe in the real presence, and the host turned into real flesh and the wine into real blood. My point is, if we try to test God, He always has little “surprises” for us which we may not like very much!

There are some saints who have survived on the Eucharist alone, which is an amazing feat.

I did mean that faithful people, who have tremendous faith and belief in him, who come to him for healing, and do not receive anything but death, why is it?

Many saints suffered terrible diseases. They were definitely very pious and their faith surpasses any of us here. Yet, they died very young after prolonged suffering. Some of them were so joyful at their deathbed because they knew they would be reunited with God.

But Jesus didn’t heal everyone during his ministry. One account from St. Mark that comes to mind said that he healed “many”–not “all”–of the village or town’s residents.

And nowhere in the Gospels does it say everyone was healed.

Is it not possible that the Gospels can only describe the physically obvious?

Perhaps we are assuming that people who are not as physically capable as we are need a miracle to cure their physical conditions. Another way to look at it is that they may already be close enough to the Lord that they don’t need our physical prowess

I am guessing they realized that no one was being healed so that had to say “my SOUL shall be healed” because who can argue with that?

Hi again, I don’t think so this saying was changed, probably without much thought after Vavtican II, trying to make Catholism more acceptable to the culture.We know the soul is more important than our bodies, of course Jesus tells us this in John 6. Now it is brought back as I remember it,thanks be to God.
