If we found out we were descended from an Alien Race would it mean there is no God?

There have been numerous science fiction movies and television shows as well as serious people (not making a statement on their validity) that say we are descended from an alien race. One of my favorite shows as a kid was the original star trek. I remember an episode which was about this very subject.

I don’t have any reason to believe this is true but would it mean that Catholicism is dead or there is no God?

Would like to see what movies, televisions and authors support that we are descendants of aliens and then see if it were true what would it mean to our faith?

Well, first I’d say the burden is on you to show what doctrine is invalidated. There are many parts of the Bible that are regarded as a figurative. How does anything change? I don’t see any. You spellout what the stumbling block is in such a scenario.

That’s a good point. I mean if we are descended from an alien race (and I admit this is an unnecessary topic for the most part, but kind of fun to me to think about) would the essence of our salvation which is centered around our belief in Christ and the outward expression of that faith in our submission to the Dogma of the church and the sacraments be null and void?

As far as the figurative lessons from the bible, say the lessons of Proverbs or Job, those would not be invalidated because they still apply to our sense of reality.

What sorts of things would have to be shifted in our approach to our God and I am speaking as if one were a Christian and believed in the those things? For instance, Adam and Eve would instantly become only allegory. Or, maybe they would be the Alien Races first man and woman and the idea of God were somehow preserved in our first humans.

Would those who don’t believe in God now claim there is no God if there revealed to be an Alien Race which created us? Would we as Christians be able to say there still is Jesus and the need for Jesus?

Please respond however you would like in kind as I am not looking to make this go any certain way but curious how people would react to such a thing? Does it prove anything or does it just re-define what we believed before? It would certainly shatter that the Bible story of Adam and Eve is literal, that’s just one outcome for sure.

I think it would pretty much destroy all religion, especially Christianity.

The Dogma of original sin would be thought false and so there would be no reason for a redeemer.

I think most of these so called new age theories floating about are somewhat diabolical.

I dont know about anyone else, but I believe as the Church teaches that I am a sovereign child of God,not the offspring of some lame lazy aliens looking for gold.lol

I would hope as a Catholic you accept evolutionary theory as fact and Adam and Eve may have been homides chosen by God at some time in the past 250,000 years. Both the Garden and Noah’s Ark were allegorical in my CCD teachings.
Panspermia is a theory that life exists throughout the universe and bacteria may travel on asteroids to planets and so life begins. As a former theistic evolutionist, this could have been God’s plan all along and would not disprove a creator a god, however the biblical God is a different story.

good point ,but the only reason I am making this reply is to increase my postings number. It did not look so good there for a sec.

It’s dangerous to project certain things from Star Trek. No one on that show has many kids, yet humans are supposedly colonizing all over the place. Liberal social values 101

I appreciate the consulting that goes into a show like Star Trek, but it’s technical consulting and they miss the ball a lot on some of the political and social practicalities. Babylon 5 is a better fit for what our future looks like.

Problem is there’s no evidence for any kind of alien life. Chlorate compounds found on Mars don’t cut it for me.

I believe we should take all observations for what they are literally unless something else were to refute it. For instance, I understand by measuring isotopes in meteors that the earth is estimated to be very old, half a billion years or so and we estimate the universe at 4 - 5 billion years old. I also do not refute if through the scientific method we have found humans to be 250,000 years old or that Adam and Eve and Noah’s ark are taught to be allegorical.

My question is though is if an alien race were to present itself and by presenting itself it also presented facts that we could not deny that we are their ancestors then would this shake the foundations of our religion? I think I would have no problem believing in God but our whole concept of reality would be in question and as another poster put our concept of original sin may be open to debate as well. If there is no original sin then is there a need for salvation? Are we just then alive and nothing more than alive to the best of our knowledge?

If an alien race appeared and claimed this I think it would be the beginning of the antichrist kingdom.

Angels are extraterrestrial life forms, and they live among us. If only those who believe in aliens from outer space would realize this they would be very excited.

No,angels are spirit beings. They are not “extraterrestrial”,but exist in another dimension. They are messengers and helpers. All of us have a guardian angel.

Unlike scripture, man can not forge, interpolate or mistranslate facts that are consistent with evolutionary theory that describe God’s “creation” and get away with it in the peer review community.

To say God can do anything is taking the lazy easy way out instead of studying the facts an then use that knowledge to clean water from cholera, make vaccines or find oil.

If you understand evolution as God’s way, you"ll be in awe rather than attributing it to 6 days of magic and would have missed out on knowledge that can help save lives and make life easier with less suffering.

You can believe what you want whether your a Catholic, Jew, Hindu…I want to know if my beliefs are true using evidence. Some have the will to know and others the will to believe No matter the evidence.

who said anything about 6 days of magic? The Church allows for the belief in creation.I certainly believe in micro evolution but macro? nope. Each creature was created according to its kind.

As far as life being easier and with less suffering I suggest you view Pope Francis latest writing.
