If We Need To Be Cleansed in Purgatory How Can The Holy Spirit Live In Us Now? What am I missing?

Purgatory removes our attachment to sin. It’s evident that people continue to be attached to certain sins in this life, even after receiving Christ.

You must think of it like this:

I break my neighbor’s window with my baseball bat.

I have already apologized for this evil act of mine, he has accepted the apology and holds no grudge against me.

Guess what is missing ? Repairing the broken window.

Sin not only damages us, it always has damaging effects on others. We must either do penance for it here (or find someway to undo the damage done if possible) or if we die before fully repairing any evil done, must finish paying for it in the purgatory.

The Holy Spirit would move you to do penance if you have not.

Nothing imperfect may enter Heaven. Nowhere does it say nothing perfect may not enter something imperfect

But didn’t Jesus pay for it? What do you mean by pay? “Pay” God somehow or “pay,” to carry the metaphor forward, by taking the actions of repairing the “window” of our soul by the softening of our hearts and wills thus detaching from the sin’s affects?

Some people look at us as piles of dung and Jesus’ sacrifice and resurrection as covering us with a blanket of snow such that our stink is hidden.

Catholics don’t see our sins being covered, we see Jesus as helping to turn us into fertile soil so that we can produce fruit. It’s a transformation.

Catholics also understand sin to demerit both eternal and temporal punishment. Temporal punishment is like how you would discipline a child when they do wrong, the discipline improving their character.

No he did not. He did open to us the possibility of obtaining forgiveness for our sins, however we still need to atone for our evil deeds.

That is also why indulgences still exist despite the sacrifice of Christ.

According to traditional Catholic teaching, the Holy Spirit leaves souls who commit a mortal sin. If someone commits lesser sins, the Holy Spirit will still live in a person.

Jesus lived in a sinful world. To experience God face to face we have to be perfectly cleansed!

If we attain perfection in this life. Which means “Total detachment from sin” When we die we go straight to Heaven without having to pass through the “Purgation”. So it is not impossible.

Yes. And this happened to the good thief on the cross. God is merciful.

If not for the action of the grace of the Holy Spirit, what else could make us clean?
The Incarnation, Life, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord was necessary because God alone can save us from the consequences of our rebellion.

All in purgatory have the habitual state of grace called sanctifying grace. It is the same state of grace in those with it, that have not yet died.

Catechism
2026 The grace of the Holy Spirit can confer true merit on us, by virtue of our adoptive filiation, and in accordance with God’s gratuitous justice. Charity is the principal source of merit in us before God.

The Holy Spirit can and does live within us now. In a very special way among us Baptized Christians.

But WE need to be perfectly cleansed to experience Heaven and the Beatific vision.

If we were sinful, it wouldn’t be Heaven.

Hope that helps Mr_Kooper_513.

God bless.

The only way to cooperate with God’s grace and reform a sinful life is by the power and presence of the Holy Spirit. He is the Sanctifier. How is He supposed to sanctify if he cannot enter a soul? The Holy Spirit is not an external Spirit, but an internal Spirit, acting within us, as we are God’s co-laborers.

we hold this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing power may be of God and not from us. We are afflicted in every way, but not constrained; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our body. For we who live are constantly being given up to death for the sake of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh.
2 Corinthians 4:7-10
