If you are a Christian, what is the real reason for you not being a Catholic? - 2

What are better ways?

Do you know the history of the reformation?

King Henry the eighth?
what did he do to establish the church of England?

Martin Luther?
What did he do to establih the Lutheran Church?
Careful with Luther, I believe the Pope just came out with something that Luther was not a heretic after all.

Not a likely outcome. You vastly underestimate the obstacles, not to mention the great affection I feel for my present affiliation. Thanks for the invite however.
I think my response has murdered this thread. :crying:

LOL, isn’t murder against the law? :o Are one of those thread killers?

I will have to go back and read your posts here but I’m pretty sure that you haven’t completely answered the question posed in this thread. You aren’t getting off the hook this easy. 😃

I wouldn’t agree with that. I do believe that the RCC became apostate and that is why the great schism happened and that’s why the reformation happened. I think the RCC is increasingly irrelevant and she is way too legalistic for most people.

Also, the arrogance of claiming to be the one true church, Petrine doctrine, that no one has salvation outside the RCC, infallible papacy, transubstantiation, etc, contribute to rejection of the RCC. There are better ways.

I don’t think it is, in principle, any more arrogant than the claim that there is no salvation except in the Name of Christ.

The uniqueness of Christ can be treated as an excuse for unChristian & arrogant pride & self-exaltation, certainly; but that comes of making God’s grace a cloak for our sinfulness. The claim itself is an essential part of the Good News - it’s an example of election: the election by God of Jesus to be the Lord’s Anointed. Our pride comes in only because this Jesus is the Saviour of sinners, Who does not wait for us to be sinless before He saves us.

The remedy seems to be, for the emphasis to be the greatness of God’s grace, rather than on us: people are not better than others for being Catholics - they are better off than others; which is a very different thing. Of itself the CC is nothing - it is Christ alone in Whose strength & grace it stands. As is true of all Churches.

Well, I guess that is a good start… 😃 like the difference between Junior Varsity and Varsity…😛 I am on the Varsity Team…We’ll be waiting for you, when you are ready to move up….

God Bless You 👍
How very incredibly arrogant and ‘holier than thou’…

Also, the arrogance of claiming to be the one true church.
But this is different, I suppose, from the alleged arrogance of Christianity in general in claiming to be the one true faith? Or do you not believe that one is saved by Christ alone?

MelanieAnne;3407258:
Really? Gosh, Jesus was the Truth and he was never arrogant. In fact, just the opposite; he went out of his way to be humble and encouraged his followers to follow suit. 😉
I’m not sure you understand what I was saying. Jesus was very forthright because he always spoke the truth. Just as you say, Jesus was and is Truth personified. If it is true that the Catholic Church is the “one true church”, it is not arrogant to say so, it is simply true.

Now, someone may not accept the idea as “true” that the Catholic Church is the “one true church”, but if it is true, it is not arrogant to say that it is, and I submit that Jesus would expect no less of us.

I suspect that the confusion here is that some people may not believe the Catholic Church is the “one true church”. Arrogance is not really involved.

Uh. No he didn’t. And there is no reason to believe that he will. That’s just pure conjecture by the irresponsible British press.

Good rule of thumb: if you ever come across a religion article in the newspaper, online, or on the TV from the main stream media, especially the British press, ignore it. They are absolutely pathetic in reporting religion news.

The winky is the clue. I’m sure the Jewish authorities thought Jesus was arrogant. After all, who’s this carpenter born is a stable to call himself king?

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see this fall. Would this rock your world if he did?

My responses were humourous and whimsical, not serious.

Hello Singinbeauty,

Was this really necessary? My post (that you addressed here, post #12) was not addressed to you and it was well intended (post #12); and well received (post #14). 🙂

My posts here are based on my beliefs in the context that I am a Roman Catholic. In this setting, a Catholic forum, where Catholics and non-Catholics share their differences, there will obviously be disagreements. However, all properly Baptized Christians (including Catholics) are all “Brothers and Sisters in Christ”. 👍

Generally speaking

It could be said that there exists a certian amount of “arrogance” and a “holier than thou” nature built into “Protestantism” itself. After-all, "Protestantism’ is the “protesting” of the Roman Catholic Church, the first Christian Church and the protesting of Christian doctrine and beliefs associated with the Early Church. This would mean that the persons responsible for "Protestantism” and all of the 36,000+ different denominations which followed, are displaying “arrogance” and a “holier than thou” attitude towards the denomination that they broke from.

Thank you for your post, you have given me some new ideas for some new threads. 👍

God Bless You! 👍

Hi,

I’m not so sure the winky is a clue, but we’ll see.

I agree, the Jewish authorities of His time probably thought He was arrogant and it’s likely the sentiment was reciprocal. I’ve often wondered how many had cause to reconsider their behavior afterwards.

I have avoided the several threads in this vein for several weeks, but this morning I decided not to avoid anymore.

The reason I am not Catholic is…threads like these!

I was raised Catholic. I was not allowed to play with Protestant kids. I was told how much Protestants hate Catholics and all the horrible things they said about us. I was told they hated Mary and mocked her. I was told all these things by Catholics.

I was never slighted by the Protestant children in the neighborhood because of my faith. They were not disallowed from playing with me.

The Catholicism I was raised in was arrogant, superstitious, and paranoid about non-Catholics. It was not very attractive.

I used to listen to Christian radio on the sly up in my bedroom, and one day I decided to read the Bible (sorry, I know it’s not PC to admit it here, but as a kid I WAS discouraged from reading the Bible, because I would misinterpret it, I was told to just listen at Mass) And reading it made me more suspect of some of the things I was being taught in the Catholicism I was raised in.

When I left home in my late teens, I attended an Episcopalian church, and was floored by the beautiful high ritual, as opposed to the “with it” guitar Masses I was used to. Later, I attended a variety of other Protestant churches, where they never said an ill word about Catholics or Catholicism, they never mocked or dishonored Mary, or did any of those things that I was taught about them growing up.

I began to suspect that the “Emperor”…the Catholic Church…had no clothes, but had been filling my head full of stuff and nonsense, trying to get me to see what wasn’t there.

Threads like these, and so many others that have been started in the last few weeks, show me how alive and well those attitudes still are among some Catholics.

They crow about having the fullness of the truth, and the Real Presence, and then tell lies about people of other faiths, their beliefs and practices. They ask a question, and provide their own answer…one I could tell you verbatim before I even open a thread, because those same ones were hammered into my head many years ago.

If you already know why other Christians are NOT Catholic, and why others “think it’s wrong to love Mary”, etc etc, why do you waste their time trying to get them to answer. You know full well ahead of time you will claim their reponses lies, and use it as a soap box to shout about how much better Catholicism is, and how persecuted and misunderstood you are and how no one knows the REAL Catholicism, just some false image which they shouldn’t let keep them from the Truth.

If you want people to know the REAL Catholicism, which is the saving Truth, maybe put your own pride on the back burner, talk about your faith rather than slander others. Tell the truth about your own faith without resorting to lies about others.

Because it is hard for me to appreciate how true Catholicism is, when I’m reading about it through a veil of lies.

so, yeah…threads like these (and my years of experience with the type of people who start them) are one of the reasons I’m not a Catholic.

Calliope, I understand your sentiment. And you’re right: many times we do get too paranoid about anti-catholic Protestants and we tend to characterize all Protestants as being anti-Catholic. Most are not.

But when you have sites like these and people distributing information with this propaganda, can you blame us?

chick.com
biblelight.com
jesus-is-lord.com
jesus-is-savior.com
bible.ca/catholic.htm
missiontocatholics.com/
thebereans.net/rcc-mariology.shtml
carm.org/catholic.htm

etc.

Most Catholics, at least the ones on this board, have at one time or another encountered anti-Catholic Protestants trying to convert them because they don’t think we’re Christian.

All I can answer is what I was taught in Catholic school, and what Christ taught…turn the other cheek and love your enemy.

Fight lies with truth, rather than with lies.

He took truth even unto the cross.

Is it wrong to expect better from those who have the Real Presence and the fullness of Truth?

If having those things avails nothing, if it makes no difference in the lives and behaviors of the members…then is it any wonder others doubt the reality of those claims?

And why give those anti-Catholics any more hits on their sites by posting links? It will only serve to cause more paranoia and venom, or spread doubt among the few who might see them and use it as ammo against the Church.

sorry, but my mom taught me “but everybody else is doing it!” is a poor excuse for my own weak behavior.

This is a great post. 👍 I deleted the parts I have not experienced because I was not raised Catholic. I converted in 1990 and am now, at best, a nominal Catholic mainly because of the attitudes Calliope cites. The problem with attempting to dialogue is that most of the die-hard Catholics on this forum always start from the same point (i.e., we are right, therefore, you must be wrong). This is not a dialogue, it is a sermon. Those of you who do this are doing your cause a disservice by shutting people down with this attitude.
