I was born and raised Protestant, and attended several different Protestant churches through the years. I have read a lot of these posts and have really enjoyed the debate (yes! Even the rather heated ones, because I find all the posts interesting.)
I have been very blessed in that most of the churches I attended were really full of people who lived very moral lives, sincerely making it their goal to become more and more like Christ. I know many Protestant Christians who make it their priority to know the Word of God and to LIVE the Word of God, as they understand truth.
Being a Catholic was never a consideration for me, because in each and ever church I attended, I was taught that Catholics were NOT Christians. There were many differences in beliefs amongst all the churches and amongst all the Christians with which I fellowshipped, but the ONE point of UNITY was the belief that Catholics were pagan and didn’t know it. In fact, if one got really trusted in all of these groups, they would hear even more candid remarks which included “anti-christ,” “whore of babylon,” “Mystery Babylon” and more.
When people claim that the Catholics are mistaken that there are still many non-Catholics who still bash Catholics or teach that Catholics are “anti-christ” and “anti-word,” they are wrong.
It isn’t that these Protestant Christians are intrinsically evil at all. On the contrary, we always believed we were RIGHT and we LOVED Catholics and attempted to “save them” from the bondage of the “whore” system. We were extremely kind and loving to Catholics–even patronizing–because we were taught that in order to “hook them and reel them in” we mustn’t let them know we thought they were “lost” and going to hell. “Be salty” we were told. “you can catch more flies with honey” and “many Catholics have just been been deceived and don’t know it” so if you “present the TRUTH to them in LOVE, they will see the error of their ways and leave the RCC.” We were taught “If they DON’T leave the RCC after you share the truth with them, then the gospel is hidden to them because they are LOST.”
The reason many of you don’t think it is common for Protestants to be against Catholic anymore, is because you see only what they want you to see. In fact, you are potential converts to most of them. They sincerely want to save your souls and not purposely being mean.
The main reasons I would never have considered the Catholic church, was that I was taught that making “graven images” was against the 10 commandments. A close second was that I was taught that praying to dead people violated the commandment against necromancy. The third is that the one unified teaching in all the churches I went to, was that the Pope was going to be the future “anti-Christ” or at the very least, the false prophet and the Catholic church was the system that would demand that I take “the mark of the beast” or behead me. I was TERRIFIED of the Catholic Church.
Even as a child, there was a reel to reel tape that circulated our entire community. It was a nun who had “escaped a convent” and told her testimony about the beatings, the sexual abuse, the pits of aborted babies in the convent, and about her being a virtual prisoner of the Catholic church.
I saw the RCC as the main engine on earth as a massive conspiracy that was infiltrating our homes, politics, media and kept our private information in vaults in order to one day persecute us for being “true Christians.”
It is amazing to me that anyone would ever convert to the Catholic Church who has been taught the things I was taught. Sincere believers everywhere think that the moment they join a Catholic Church, they have “taken the mark of the beast.” These notions are not gone and things are not changing as quickly as you may think.
I recently heard a very respected Christian tell me, “I used to watch FOX news, but I found out they were controlled by the Catholic Church.”
More Protestants would be interested in what Catholics believe, but the warnings of caution about “being sucked in” are so great, we were nearly all taught to never even go near anything Catholic because of demonic tentacles which would grab us and pull us into hell.
I need to mention that I did not attend any of the more liturgical type churches, because I was taught that they were the most like Catholic and were the “daughters of the whore.”
There are WONDERFUL, holy living Christians in churches, all very SINCERE and who have good reasons for avoiding the Catholic Church. It isn’t that they are trying to avoid living a “holy life,” or “the fullness” of the Gospel. They are not seeking an easier way, but they think that Catholics are doing that.
When a Protestant converts to Catholicism, their Protestant peers are visibly shaken and often say things like “WHAT?! THEY KNEW BETTER than THIS!” and they make remarks like “We need to pray for them HARD, if they have not been turned over to reprobate mind, there is still hope.” Many honestly BELIEVE that Catholics are blindly in the “whore of babylon.”
