If you are Catholic- Do you HAVE to say the rosary?

Its ok I get kicked off you will always be in my prayers. I just Hope and pray You READ YOUE BIBLE everyday dont trust man

Well I don’t trust you for one - that should make you happy. I’m praying for you too…

To Mary. Who I’m 100% certain Jesus honours highly, since she’s his mother and the commandment requires us to honour our mothers, and whose requests I am 110% sure he listens to like he did at Cana.
 
Dear Biblebeliver, welcome to the Catholic Answers Forums.

I am sure you will find answers to the questions you have about the Catholic faith here. You might want to pop over to the Apologetics threads for many of the issues you raise. They are legitimate questions you ask, provided you are willing to hear the answers you will be offered. Maybe the one about listing all the errors of the Catholic faith would be a good one to start with?

I may be wrong about this, but on a side note, would you describe your self as a former Catholic? I don’t have much to go on, but I just have an inkling that you are. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I have a question for you. It is based upon my presupposition that you believe in the Bible and the Bible alone and is this:

"Where does the Bible give a complete, inspired and infallible list of the books that make up the Bible?"

You may take as much time as you need to give the verse and chapter references. Please let me know your answer.

P.S. It’s probably not a good idea to copy and paste other people’s work without giving some credit. I googled a slab of your text and it is quoted verbatim from www.jesus-is-savior.com. You won’t last long around here doing that. If you want to state your case, then please be original. Otherwise someone might notice.

And while you are reading your bible, maybe you can explain why Jesus said the SAME repetitive prayer in the garden to His Father when it is your conclusion that Jesus forbid repetition in prayer.
 
Oops. He’s gone. I always come to these discussions too late. Would have loved to see him explain why God commanded all sorts of images to be made in His temple (1 kings 6-8) if making images was wrong.
 
A Catholic does not have to say the Rosary.
Not saying the Rosary is the Catholic’s loss.

No - you do not have to say the Rosary

Yes - you do have to respect your grandparents

I trusted my grandfather to know what is good for me and how to protect me - if he said we pray the rosary, we prayed the rosary.

It is one of the dearest memories of him that I have.
 
What about if a rosary is given as a penance during confession. Do you have to say it then?
 
Whenever I asked for a different penance, the priest always asked for a reason why. I wonder if it fly if somebody said that the rosary came from private revelation and is not binding on the faithful?

Good point. I would think regardless of the objection that a priest wouldn’t stick to a penance knowing you weren’t going to do it, that would render the confession a waste of his time and yours.

When you pull the Rosary apart, though, the Our Father, the Hail Mary and the Glory Be are all entirely scriptural prayers which no Catholic should have problems with. So is the Apostle’s Creed. The ‘oh my Jesus’ prayer, although from private revelation, doesn’t have anything theologically repugnant to it, it’s entirely addressed to Jesus. Only really leaves the ‘Hail Holy Queen’ 🤷

Not to mention that the Rosary actually began as a substitute for the Psalms (Divine Office) for people who were illiterate and couldn’t read them. Hence 150 Hail Mary’s = 150 Psalms. So it didn’t really originate with private revelation at all.

i would think that a person who’s just been forgiven could put whatever problem they have with the rosary aside and say it if given as penance.
i think the better question is WHY there’s a problem with it to start with.
 
I, personally, say two rosaries a day – one on the way to work and one on the way back home.

However, recent discussion on this board seems to indicate that some folks are of the opinion that we do not need anything that comes to us from private revelation and the rosary came to us from private revelation.

I think that is the point of this discussion.

private relelation or not…the rosary has been around (giving graces and comfort) for a VERY long time.
as to the ‘private revelation’ part…the angel did not appear in a throng of people and announce to Mary that she was to give birth to the Savior either.😉

I believe technically the answer would be no. I am under the impression that forgiveness is given, and does not depend at all on whether or not you perform the penance. That being said, ignoring the penance certainly is a bad idea, and brings into question whether you are truly sorry in the first place, but that is irrelevant to the question you posed.

I was always taught that the penance which we fail to do on earth will be required of us in purgatory. However, our earthly penance is like pennies on the dollar compared to our purgatory penance. Therefore, it is really foolish not to do a penance no matter how difficult it may be because what will be required of us in purgatory will be numerous times more difficult.

I’m not the original post’er. As I already mentioned, I normally say two rosaries a day.
