If you are Catholic- Do you HAVE to say the rosary?

No, of course you do not have to say the Rosary. *But if a a fire starts in your house, **I hope you know where the fire extinguisher is! *** Otherwise, your house will burn down! 😛

There are special graces that come through the Rosary. Why? I don’t know exactly, but I suspect it has something to do with the fact that Mary, the Mother of Jesus, has asked us to pray it.

All I know is that generally, it nags at me throughout the day until I do say it. I think I put it off feeling like I will be bored or it will be ineffectual. Everytime – I am wrong.

Everytime, Mary’s intercession insures God’s graces come to comfort and sustain me.

***Everytime *– I realize the Lord is there to help me, if I will only give him the time.

they don’t like brushing their teeth either, but there’s a reason we make them do it.

so far i agree that the Rosary is the most powerful prayer we have today. i enjoy the divine mercy chaplet, but the Rosary with its meditations gets me much deeper into prayer. if everyone did the Rosary and actually contemplated the mysteries as they were meant to be, the world would be a more peaceful place. this is not an opinion - it is fact!

THIS IS NOT AN OPTION PRIVATE! now get on your knees and do the rosary, all of you! your mom in army boots says so. that’s it, no soup for you!
 
Guys, we’re getting way off track here. We can all agree that we must pray deeply and passionately to/with/in God. But to suggest that one particular type of devotion is the best means for everyone to enter into a deep relationship with our Lord is simply not grounded in reason, and as Catholics we cannot ignore reason.

We now know though many studies that most people relate to others in a fundamentally different way from most others.
The essential element of relating is common, but not the means by which it is done. Some may prefer Augustinian styles of prayers. Some may prefer a more Thomistic approach. Others again an Ignatian. There are many possibilities!

Prayer, according to the Catechism, is a relationship. Do most men relate to other men in the same way most women relate to other women? If men tried relating to other men as women relate to other women, would their relationships be very good? As a man, I know this would not be the case; we have to relate naturally, as God formed our soul, and knows that each relates to another differently.

Thus, we must stop saying that a private devotion that has helped ourselves personally will have the same benefit for everyone else. It likely will not. By foisting the rosary on everyone we are being the very opposite of Catholic - universal. We must recognize that God formed our souls, and formed our souls differently. By saying the rosary is not strictly necessary, but then saying that we really ought to do it, we’re potentially leading many people away from God. If that devotion is seen as necessary, and other devotions that would draw them closer to God are not done, they are not being brought as close to God as they could be, and that should weigh heavily on our conscience. People may even come to associate an inappropriate way of relating to God as the best kind of relating they can have with our Maker, and never know the joy of living fully and deeply in our Lord.

So before we say that everyone really ought to do the rosary, even if it’s not strictly necessary, let’s instead suggest that everyone ought to do the devotion that brings them closest to God - and recognize that may not be the rosary, even if the rosary is the best means for ourselves.

As a final thought, if the rosary were as essential as some suggest here, wouldn’t Rome mandate the daily recitation of the Rosary in place of the Liturgy of the Hours? Entering in a deep relationship (prayer) with our Lord is the essential thing, not the rosary.
 
Nope, it is not required. Other posters have said similar things. It is often used as a quiet, focusing, centering prayer to many people today.

I have the recordings that they play on RR in the evenings on my iPod (all 4 of them). Sometimes I just need to step away for a quiet half hour (I took out a few excess music tracks before transferring) and listen to them when I have a hard time getting there myself.
 
As long as you say some kind of prayer regularly, it probably doesn’t matter exactly what. The Rosary is a very popular form of private devotion, but there are a zillion kinds of prayers and devotional practices which are also good and full of graces, especially if you persevere with them.
 
the Rosary is considered the best prayer there is, and rightly so, the first post speaks of being forced to pray it by his grandparents which is a shame because if they put some effort into teaching him about it he would love it, ‘why beat the donkey when he’ll go to the water anyway’. I felt when younger and knowing nothing about God that I was being forced to go to Mass, although I should have been thought why and not just out of habit, but I was benefical to me, to say the least, even though not understanding at the time. the Rosary is made up of vocal and contemplative praying, by praying the Lords prayer and the Hail Mary while meditating on the most important mysteries of Our Lords life and His mother, read ‘The Secret of the Rosary’ by St. Louis de Montfort and trust me you’ll love the Rosary when you learn of the history and miracles of it. they say its a private devotion but I think it should’nt be considered so because of how powerful it is. about those non-catholics who pray it, they should continue as they will be converting themselves by praying to Our Lady of the Rosary (approved by Church, feast day - Oct 7)

some info about the Rosary - St. Dominic when heresy broke out and after failing to convert by his preaching, he withdrew and mortified himself so as to take their punishment onto himself and with hope of conversion. after 3 days exhausted, Our Lady appeared telling him what he was doing was good but She had something much better, presenting him the Rosary telling him to pray it and spread devotion to it, as she prays with and intercedes for those who practice it.
with it he converted with ease and spread it faster than possible without Divine Intervention, large amounts of accounts of miracles and signs relating Rosary if you research it. e.g battles won against unbelievable odds by those armies, who being attacked, had devotion to the Rosary, most hardened sinners converted in short time.

people may say that the Rosary isnt necessary because it isnt dogmatic, what do you mean? you wouldnt avoid something that does good and is considered great by countless Popes and Saints, the late Holy Father, Pope John Paul ll was so devoted to the Rosary he even added more mysteries to it, the mysteries of light, it was his favorite prayer, St. Padre Pio was forever praying it and recommending it, he said that it was the ‘GREATEST WEAPON’ against satan, research the lives of the saints and you’d be suprised if you were able to find one who didnt pray the Rosary.
one account of St Mary Magdalen who wanting to become more perfect prayed to find the best way of doing so, and it was revealed to her that it is by meditating on the life of our Lord especially His passion, and this was before the Rosary was introduced which is based on Jesus’ life and not only this but it is joined at the same time to the greatest prayer, the one our Lord prayed and consists of Hail Marys so as to give honour to our Lady,
people believe that the more we give honour to Mary the less we give to God, but the opposite is true, as she magnifies the Lord and the closer we are to Her then we become closer to Jesus, what mother would draw us back from the Father or Son if we showed her love which she deserves, would any love of God be taken away? we are told to honour our parents in the Commandments, why would we go against His teachings when He Himself chose Her as His Mother and then gave Her as a Mother to us,
so dont avoid the Rosary when it is one of the best means we can become closer to God, learn about it and you’ll love it but leave it off in a scepical fear without even learning and deciding for yourself and you’ll regret the good you could have done yourself and others,

My parents used to make us say the rosary on a daily basis. We would gather as a family after dinner and take turns leading. My older brothers and sisters seemed quite put off by it sometimes because they couldn’t go out for the night until we were done. If one of their friends came over (Didn’t matter if they were Catholic or not) my mom would hand them an extra rosary… She always had extras. When I moved out of my parents house, I am sad to say that I stopped saying the rosary on my own. But times when I would pop in for an unanounced visit, I would catch them saying the rosary. They never stopped once they started so I would join in. My parents have both been passed away for about 10 years but one day I ran accross my dad’s old rosery… missing a few beads but smelled of olive wood. For lent I decided to start say it daily. It felt as though my mom and dad were right there with me and we were praying together again. So I started to offer the rosery up for the poor souls in purgatory. Now I say the rosery each day before work. If I don’t get the prayer said in the morning, the day isn’t right until I sit down. I love this prayer and thank my parents every day for “making” me say it when I was growing up.
 
no you don’t have to pray the rosary or any specific prayer, but you must pray, both with the Church in her public prayer, the liturgy, and privately, in some fashion, preferably daily.

:confused: I’m going to have a put an end to a thread that should have died a long time ago,

🙂 the Rosary is the most powerful prayer there is, people dont have to pray it (its their loss)
🙂 we recieved it directly from her in a revelation that is approved and promoted by the church. (no, we do not have to pray it, as it was revealed in a private revelation, so it is not obligatory, but why not take a page out of the countless Saints, Popes, Religious, laypeoples books, it didnt do them too much harm)
🙂 it consists of:
the perfect prayer - the Lord’s prayer (read one of the many commentaries on it to see more clearly how great it is, we take it too much for granted),
our Lady’s prayer (remember we dont prayer TO her but we pray t the fact is we would have not seen it if others had not (seen first hand their miracles), they were humble and were ashamed and embarrassed when they did, but some saints have gone unnoticed to some extent (I say this because they have become (canonised) saints here, (not including the saints that slipped past fully unnoticed, if there were (we cant say confidently as we cannot doubt or presume on God’s Mercy), some saints are found out after people pray for intercession, but that means people must have seen or a least beheld some type of sanctity otherwise why pray for intercession for that soul, they had a reason. So anyway the point I’m making is this, Mary is the Mother of God, made so by God, and she was so humble she evaded recognition even by the saints (living at the time), though they did know she was the Mother of God, only after they came to realise Jesus as God (they didnt know instantly or for some time, about 33yrs in fact), his practicing of meekness and humility to perfection made Him unseen by the world, they only knew Him as a carpenter, but His reason for coming into the world made it necessary to step out from the shadows, (this starting because of Mary) even though He mainly wanted to free them from death, His compassion caused some limelight by means of healing them of bodily weakness, but probably He knew some needed these little signs to fully believe, and they always had some higher significance. Back to the point His humility allowed Him pass through unseen, but it could never be always like this for Him, perhaps had we not abused free will, and there was no need of redemption, and God wanted to be man for some reason, I’m certain that no-one but Mary (perhaps not even Mary, impossible perhaps but just see where I’m getting at) would have ever known God was with them, that was how perfect His humility was, now look at Mary, if it wasnt for Jesus telling us to take Mary as our mother, I’d say there would be less Catholics around because there is next to nothing about the Virgin in scriptures, Jesus only said what was necessary and that was very necessary when He commanded us to accept Mary as our mother, a command, He didnt say: Behold your mother if you want to, thats the benefit of living in this day and age, we have all the writings, teachings, and sayings of the saints, tackling all types of heretics about Mary’s virginity, her universal mothership, being the true Mother of God in every sense, we can learn from their knowledge and understanding when we have doubts on anything, but its not difficult to piece up the picture: Jesus calls us to be His brothers, if I want to be His brother we will have the same mother, every child has parents, a mother He had Mary, and the God, Eternal Father, (and St Joseph as foster father so He could more fully identify with us, with a human father), so therefore we have the same mother, not my mother she was not alive at the time, and has original sin (as far as I know! but if not I can easily say she is a sinner (firsthand exp.)) so He couldnt be born of her as orginal sin is hereditary and God and sin are incommpatible so logically it is His mother, but I was not alive back then!? but she died(well there is debate if she died or was still living at the time of the Assumption (Church has left it open) so not sure, its open for argument) before I was born, but she entered eternity before me, in eternity to God, past, present and future are the same moment, so even if I was alive before her and died before her when she is in eternity God come allow her to be there at the same time of my life, even beforehand, as the past in the world would be the present in eternity, so she is my mother because I want to be a brother with and in Christ, that is why He told us to take her as mother, and that is why in private revelations, she calls us her children, (they are approved such as lourdes, fatima etc.)
 
but if shes my mother I should have the same father of Jesus, St Joseph was not His maternal father but foster father, so I can take him as my foster father and ask his intercession, but do we have the same father? yes indeed, God the Father!, but how so since I am not the Son of God but a creature made in His image? because God created us for His glory when we abused free will we were seperated further so as we have sin we cannot make reparition for sin, only someone perfect, no-one was perfect Adam & Eve were our first parents they sinned and its hereditary so we’re all sinners, no hope for us. God loved us so much, even though we shouldnt have complained if He destroyed everyone of us we deserved it, He actually became like one of us as only He was perfect so He could satisfy the punishment due to sin, as He cannot contradict Himself, so every single sin from the beginning of time to its end He suffered for it, almost infinite suffering, if it wasnt for the fact that all punishment for sin is temporal as long as you convert and do good in atonement for it, and if we do penance here it is remitted or else if we are fully converted but still need to do penance before we die God was good enough to give us Purgatory so that we would not be damned forever if we sin had sin that we repented of but not given what was due, in good works, indulgences and penance, so even though we do penance and suffer in purgatory for our sind, know that Jesus suffered for them all already all we can do is partake in His suffering, out of love and gratitude for Him. So anyway Jesus became our missing link between man and God, not only did He restore us but raised us more than the creatures that we are, but to adopted sons of God, because He wanted us to have life to the full, He even commanded us to accept God as our father and accept our being heirs to Heaven, Princes and Princesses you could say of Paradise, He commanded us when He said When you pray, pray like this Our Father. . if I said I was a son of God before Jesus told me to it would be Blaspheme, now it would be wrong to say I am not an (adopted) son of God, soooo back to the main point to accept God the Father, as father, God the Son as brother I must accept Mary, the daughter of God, Mother of the Son, and spouse of the Holy Spirit as my mother. theres a saying: you can choose your friends, not your family. that is true but I could reject them if I want to, free will still here I can still make bad choices, it would be bad enough to not obey my parents, but how much more to reject them, and how much worse to accept one and not the other as the other would be even more offended and the one I chose would not like it because to offend one is to do the same to the other, when I refuse to take advice it is not good although it might not be disobedient, it will make me grow deaf to that advice, and eventually disobedient. So when I accept God ( as Father, Jesus as brother) and refuse Mary, I knowingly or not really refuse God,
 
Mary was the perfect human (who wasnt also God) she was the most in line with Gods will she lived in obscurity to such a degree, that saints couldnt see past her humility to her close union with God, they saints who wrote the Gospel even though inspired with the Holy Spirit failed to she how holy she was (are at least failed to mention it to the degree she deserved). St Augustine wrote- God created man without man, God cannot save man without man. our free will can be our downfall, but Mary was given a choice to be the Mother of God (God gave her free will too), she used her free will to accept His will, and by bringing God into the world, it was through Her we were saved, maybe if she did decline this most incredible of all the responsibilities even given to mankind, there could have been another Immaculate Conception, but we know that there wasnt, she was the only human (excluding Jesus) who was born without sin, and who never sinned (Adam and Eve were created without sin, but they were not born without sin & did sin) we take for granted how great she lived yet we lord over the saints who themselves have the greatest devotion to her over all creatures, I’d say saints have never became the saints they are by holding any other creature in a higher regard than Mary, many are somewhat afraid of Mary in the sense that she is higher than the saints so maybe we could make her an idol and go against God in the process but I say to you who would love one parent less if they increased love in the other, Mary herself said in a statement that didnt go against God or humility when she said all generations will call her blessed, that is the least she could have siad of herself as she was so in line with God that she couldnt have gone lower, she was and is the lowest of all Gods servants, she emptied herself so much that she was full of grace, if not overflowing, we all know we recieve grace but who knows of another who is full of it. the cornshafts in harvest when ready for picking, there are ones that are very tall (the proud), and ones that are very low (the humble), when you open the leaves of each you find the tall ones empty and the ones lowest to the the ground full. Mary reached where no-one else can or will (without Gods intervention) that is why we hold her in highest regard, by doing this we are brought closer to God, she is the best ‘signpost’ all we have to do is follow her direction, her guidance, and she will bring us to God, the goal of Heaven is the Beatic Vision where we will see God face to face in all His glory, ’ no man will see the face of god and live’ we will have to die to get there, and we will if righteous come to know God, Mary herself said that her soul magnifies the Lord, we use magnifing glasses to see or know something more closer/better, in Heaven we will see God face to face, no-one in between, on earth though others can help us to know God more, others can intercede so if we look to Mary like a magnifying glass we will see through it and know God better while we are in this earthily exile, so accept what you mother gives and advises otherwise you will grow deaf to advice and eventually hardhearted, Mary gives us her Rosary and advises us to pray it often , would our mother and the Mother of God give us bad advice, :confused: dont know? I’ll tell you - she gives us the best advice to follow the Sacred Scriptures closer, she lived the Scriptures and in fact became the scriptures by fulfiling the Scriptures of the Old Testament, she was the cause of the New Testament and is the in the end of them.(Rev 12) the Church has approved the Rosary, what more than we need?, our Mother the Church has encouraged the devotion Our Mother of God has revealed to us, they are one and the same mother as Mary is our Universal Mother, and so the Mother of the Universal Church, the Church being our Mother has for its Mother Mary, she is not our grandmother so she is still part of the Church, in Heaven and earth always interceding for us her children, we the adopted children of God.
 
😊 Gasp… . . the reason I’ve gone it this much detail is usually when someone has a problem with something there is more to it than it seems, you have to go to the root of the problems, from my experience, as little as it is, is that people who have a hard time accepting marion visions such as Fatima, Lourdes, not to mention all those of saints, St Faustina, St Padre Pio, the list goes on, the reason they find them hard to accept is because they find it hard to accept Mary, “why do I need Mary when I can go to God firsthand?”- they say, well you dont ‘need’ to, but as in previous quote from ChristianVet - No, of course you do not have to say the Rosary. the Rosary is without a doubt a life saver, actually to be correct a SOUL SAVER)
now if any can remember back to the Rosary as the most powerful prayer (this was just a bit on our Lady’s prayer, the Hail Mary), now the Lord’s prayer is the perfect prayer no need to speak further, this is combined to the Hail Marys, and medatative prayer on each mystery, as we go through the vocal prayers we also contemplate the lives of our Lord and Mary, this makes the rosary what it is, the vocal, meditating and while we do this we are intercedeing for us, others intentions with, through and for Our Lady. What could be better?
in Fatima we are asked make reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, even though she is in Heaven she went through pain at seeing her Son go through pain for us, she was so united to His Sacred Heart that her own was pierced with pain, I believe she went through pain for each seperate pain of Jesus, what parent couldnt be in pain at the sight of their child in agony? we say this in feelings and emotions but she literally went through pain as Simeon said she would, we see the saints the closer they advanced in sanctity the more pains the suffered (living in conformity with Jesus) then surely Mary higher than the saints went through more pains with her Son.
I see it this way although she is in Heaven (there we feel no pain) but because Jesus suffered for all sin, He suffered for all them in advance in His Passion, I believe this was her case as well, when we dont sin and help others not to we relieve (meaning we make sure not to offend(hurt) them, when we love them more we will not want to hurt them in the least, the saints had a better understanding of this as they took it into action, God will see our efforts and reward us more, when we have more trials we will have more options to please God) them from sufferings they would have suffered both Jesus in His Passion, and Mary at the sight of His Passion.
St Faustina said the only things we can do is sin. so we should stop doing evil and accept graces and good instead.
the first 5 saturdays are for reperation to the Immaculte Heart. Mary gave us these devotions because they are necessary the Church approves of it but lets it up to us to decide, our free will, will we accept the help we are offered as Jesus from the cyrean,
it is for our benefit, to bring us closer to God and further from sin.

I want to put an end to this debate which is easily answered in simplicity:
You do not have to pray the Rosary, although it will be very, very benefical to your soul and others if you did, it would be unwise to neglect it.

👍 4th commandment. honour your father and mother

👍 the Blessed Virgin Mary is your mother

👍 she has been sent here by God, she does not act on her own account

👍 she has given us the rosary, if she is offering this it is because God wants it so

👍 when we accept her help we are accepting God’s help as her will cant be contrary to God as she is in Heaven

👍 she is the woman revealed in Revelations as the woman that will help us

👍 when the Church approves something it means it is a very good way to God

Jesus came to us through Mary, what better way to come to Jesus but my His and our Mother Mary

please refer any more posts back to this, perhaps if then know the basics it might answer there arguments for them with the help of God, or if anything the size of it will tire them out it sure did for me!
