If you have a dishwasher how often do you use it?

I have seven kids. Our routine for dishes is this:
During the school year-- load and run the dishwasher at bedtime, unload first thing in the morning. Load dirties into it over the course of the day.

Now, on vacation-- same thing at bedtime, unload first thing. But since the kids are all home, it’s full right after lunch. So we run it again and unload when it’s done. I try to treat it like my “dirty dish storage device” and never let it just sit there with clean dishes.

I have a dishwasher and use it always. I do have some dishes that I prefer to handwash though.

My mom is the same as me.

My grandma, on the other hand, uses hers for storage… what is with that anyway??? We almost fell on the floor laughing when, one time, she asked us if we wanted some cookies then proceeded to get them out of the dishwasher, LOL!

She laughed with us…we just have that kind of relationship (we weren’t being rude).

Can’t imagine any dishwasher that uses less water than handwashing will get the dishes properly clean!

We fill the sink in the morning with soapy water and wash last nights snack dishes and breakfast dishes, then don’t fill it againg until we do the dinner dishes - so lunch dishes (usually one or two plates and a knife) wait until then. Yes, there are only four of us here and two of them are adult children who are only home for the summer 🙂
…and hand washing in dirty water gets them clean? Love the dw and use it twice a day, every day–though I hand wash all my flatware as it can’t go in the dw.

I only run the dishwasher when it’s full, which is about once a week. Certain things I always wash by hand, and I also wash by hand anything that I only have one or two of, and will need again before I run the machine.

I think I know why so many people use the diswasher as a storage device – because emptying the dishwasher is a pain in the neck!

Actually the water is pretty darn clean for the am dishes (fresh, hot soapy water) and is drained before we do the pm dishes and if it gets dirty in the middle of washing we then refill the sink. And yes, hand washing dishes gets them clean! I can say that hand washing definitely gets my dishes cleaner than my dishwasher does and we are all pretty healthy with no side effects from handwashing! As a matter of fact, I find that some of the dw detergents are more toxic to me than good old Palmolive original! Of course, if I had a dishwasher that actually cleaned the dishes I would use it and probably make my own dw detergent using my old formula of baking soda and borax 🙂

Ours is only a year old (so is the house) and it works wonderfully. It definitely cleans things properly, but I wouldn’t say anything is any more sanitary than if washed by hand. The water isn’t any hotter - our dishwasher is set to 50 degrees C (eco setting) for using enzyme detergent.

We don’t put sharp knives in it, and baby bowls can’t go in it either(for sterilising baby bottles we use the microwave steriliser). And sometimes a saucepan will be too much of a challenge for it (or we’ll run out of space in there), so we do it by hand. But other than that, everything that will fit, goes in. Even the Wedgwood!

And it’s run about once every 2-3 days. There are only 2 adults and one baby in our house (second baby due in November).

When this dishwasher dies (hopefully a long way off) we’ll look for something more water efficient, but this one only uses 19 litres.

Isn’t that what wives are for ?

I got all the way to the bottom thinking my joke had not been used yet. I’m surprised it took that long. 😃

We use it probably 2-3 times per week. The only problem is that the normal setting is broken (the button sticks) and one time we went on vacation for like 5 days, and when we came back, we realized it had been running the whole time, non stop, because the normal button never popped out at the end of the cycle. So we are more careful with it now.

We have one and use it roughly half the time, maybe three times a week at most. When I work, I am so bone-beat tired that I will rinse the dishes, put them in the racks and then when we get a full load, turn it on. I do the pots and pans by hand. We are empty nesters, so unless we have the grandkids over or have company, it doesn’t pay to use it for a few dishes. We don’t run out of dishes, silverware, or glasswear by stacking the used ones in there so that’s not an issue. When I had kids living at home, we used it alot several times a day.

This is OUTRAGEOUS!! LOL!!! Once when I had a new car, it idled so quietly that after lunch one day at work, I got out, locked the car door and returned 4 hours later, only to find I’d locked the key inside and the car was STILL RUNNING!! Fortunately I had a spare key! But I think this dishwasher story TAKES THE CAKE!!!

WalMart has the best and cheap box of dishwasher powder. The box is green and called automatic dishwashing detergent or something. (No, not an employee. I was just plain surprised about it so had to share.)

Thanks for the tip! The borax recipe sure is interesting!

on average… with 7 people at home… at least once a day! and yes… we kids do the washing first… parents they think we are just for their personal work 😛

I run the dishwasher at least twice per day! That is on top of handwashing a few items. when I use paper plates and cups I can get away with once per wee.

I also need to vaccum every day and do at least one load of laundry or I get WAY behind! Do kids get less mess as they get older?

Oh yea and I mow the front yard twice per week, The AFB is very strict about grass length. I only mow the back once per week… I guess you could say my yard is a mullet.

Walmart also has the best pistachios, “Sam’s Choice” .and they are sold in a big black plastic bag with green writing and a picture of pistachios on the front… They are the biggest, best pistachios of any brand I have ever bought.

They also, suprisingly enough, have the best kitty litter. It is called “Special Kitty” clumping litter (I know alot of ppl are against clumping litter) But there is absolutely no litter box odor. I have tried all other brands and my mom recommended it, It truly is the pick of the litter.
