If you knew for a fact that life ceased to exist after death, how would you live your life now?

Lets say, it was a proven fact that there was no god, no after life, no anything. That when we die, the party is over and lights are out.

How would you live your life differently? I know we all (well, for most members on this board) know that this isn’t the case, but what if it was? How would you live your life different or would it be any different than how you live it now?

Seeing as after we die we wouldn’t exist to care, I would download illegal music, films, steal, judge others, not care about war if it doesn’t affect me etc… and have a physical relationship with my boyfriend 😛

i wouldn’t live my life differently. what for? i have been a good citizen, a good wife, good mother, and sister. there is nothing to change. but since we know that this life is not all there is why even think about this being all there is? its not all there is. I take God’s word for it. that word will never fail. so i don’t need to think about this life being all there is because its not.

I would become the best criminal I could and steal millions, this living life on the up and up is for the birds. Never have money or anything good, but I keep plugging away because there’s suppose to be a good life after this miserable one

but I always told myself that if I were an Atheist I would be the most depressed person on the face of the planet. This world is so depressing with the poverty and suffering and the evil that one human can do to another and if there was no after life, no reason for it, I would probably lose my mind.

I would probably join in on being a horrible person as well b/c what’s the point?

Praise the Lord Jesus Christ that this isn’t the case!!! He gives meaning to everything. I feel so sorry for the atheists and other religions who don’t have Him and the Blessed Mother to help them through the tough times and also to thank them for the good times.

Good thread! If you really think about it long and hard “What If there isn’t anything” and realize how life would be different you kind of also realize how much gratitude we owe Christ b/c there IS something.

It seems to me that, even if in your purely hypothetical question, we could disregard the first three of the 10 commandments, the remaining seven, which lead us in how we deal with our fellow man, are reasonable and defendable rules for life. I would hope that I would continue to try to live by them, as well as the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth.

By the way, the law of government would still apply, so if you steal and get caught, you would go to jail.

Thanks for the replies! it’s really interesting to see how god affects us to do things differently because we answer to him. As compared to how we would do things differently if we didn’t have god to answer to.

So glad you asked this question because I’ve already given it serious thought. My answer is this: It wouldn’t matter what I did, thought or felt about ANYTHING…because one second after my heart stopped beating I wouldn’t remember any of it. You can live for a THOUSAND YEARS, but when you die you can’t remember ANY of what you did. What goood would it be to do ANYTHING if you cannot remember it? A thousand years compared to eternity is LESS than one drop in the world’s ocean. Much less than even that. One divided by infinity is…ZERO. It would be just as if you NEVER existed…and it would REMAIN that way for ALL ETERNITY!

My conclusion is this: The ONLY life that CAN exist is ETERNAL LIFE. Everything else, no matter how “long” it may last, is DEATH.

Thankfully there IS a God. A God of PURE LOVE whom we can behold in the body of Jesus Christ…our ETERNAL LIFE! Otherwise, there is ONLY death.
 
I personally know one family who are athiests.
They are civil law abiding citizens.
They live by all the laws set out for us as far as I can tell, they have raised responsible children to adulthood.Seem to enjoy their life with each other. .
Because they have no belief in a higher power, they have no hope for an eternal life everlasting and therefore never even consider such and probably don’t want to.
I suppose if I were to live life believing such I would do my best to live according to what the law dictates.I wouldn’t fancy spending a life in jail for breaking civil law.:p:rolleyes::eek:😃

A life without a god? Hmmm…

Well, if all this was, I would try my very best to try to make an postive impact on the world as fast as I could. I know I have failed to help others, and failed to try as well. I will try my best to shine a light in other people’s lifes.

Since I believe that God exists, I can only hope He forgives me the many times I have failed to help others, simply because of my selfishness. Although I am only 20, I hope in the future, I will make an impact in other people’s lifes. I can only hope and try, for Chirst.
 
I’m comforted during rough times knowing that it happens for a reason…if there was no reason for my hardships I would probably have a shorter temper and not practice so much patience or tolerance with other people. Other than an attitude adjustment, I think I would pretty much live the same way I do now: work, sleep, eat, be married, have kids… If all the Churches closed down I guess I would have to find somewhere else to hang out on Sunday mornings, too. I might buy one of the churches and live in it…they’re pretty…and I’d probably still read and do research on religion, since there’s such an interesting history to it.

I can’t imagine not having God, though, that sounds aweful 😦
 
I hope I wouldn’t change too much. There are a lot of practical benefits to the virtues to which Christ calls us - being self-disciplined and moderate in our desires and appetites, honest, conscious of the dignity and needs of others, including the unborn, thoroughly committed in marital relationships, celibate if unmarried and so on.

Lots of pagan philosophers espoused most if not all of the same virtues, after all, so it seems they are grounded in common sense.

Mind you, I’d stop going to church and confession. And probably start campaigning for gay marriage - I was quite the liberal before I reverted.

In my response, I didn’t consider consider Natural Law,and which I believe comes from God, (we believers in God actually believe He created everything) because of the nature of the OP’s question. 😦 😉 Peace, Carlan

Hi Snowflakes: If there was no God, and no afterlife I would be happy for the teachings of Jesus, Gautama Buddha and Krishna on how to live the life I did have. They are equally valid whether there is an afterlife or not. Chasing after pleasure and avoiding pain would be the surest way to ensure that this life is a living hell. Attachment and want are the root of all suffering. The realization that all the love you will ever need is inside of you and only increases the more freely it is given is the way to living a good life, whether there is an afterlife of not. Taking each moment in it’s turn and living it for what it is, rather than wishing for it to be something other than what it is would be the most I could do. It s the most I can do whether there is an afterlife or not. I would be good for goodness sake and nothing more. That is the path to contentment. That is the path to a good life.

Hi Sufjon, I do think ,considering the OP, it seems Christs teaching, and what I know of Buddha teaching could be our best guide for a good healthy life. I don’t mention the others because I haven’t read about their philosophies.Peace, Carlan
 
as i write this a mortar was just shot down, that was coming my way. death is not just theory or conjecture with me. it is always a present possibility. let me just say, i would do nothing different. even if there was nothing after this life, i am still responsible for my fellow brothers and sisters here. even if it was all over for myself, i would hope i would be able to make it so these young people i serve with would continue to enjoy their life. just had another mortar shot down, wow, the adversary is active tonight. thank God for big guns! :eek: peace and love for all here. gonna be a long night. :signofcross: think im gonna pray the rosary. night all, will let you know how it turns out. peace 🙂

I’d like to think I wouldn’t live life any differently. The thing is, a life all about self with no thought of others is an empty and unfulfilling life. I know this, from experience. There is no joy in self-absorption.
