If You Were Previously a Protestant, Which Form/ Rite Do You Attend

A lot of Catholics whom have spoken to express amazement that my first mass was an EF and they wonder how I, who was raised as an Evangelical Protestant was attracted to that form of the mass.

It is so different from what I was used to. It should have been alien or scary.

Granted, I did spend some time in a reformed church, which got me used to a more liturgical setting. Otherwise, I may have run from fright. 😛

It makes me wonder if converts are normally more attracted to the OF or other form/rite.

Which rite or form did you first attend or currently attend? If you are not a convert, which rite or form do your friends attend?

Disclaimer: I am not pitting one form or rite against another. This is just a poll.

When I converted back in 1993 I went to the OF. It was not a choice because I had no clue about the tradition. The tradition and TLM were spoken about in a negative way in my RCIA, as well as by other catholics my age. I was a teenager then so obviously they were educated in the same anti-tradition mindset as I was. I felt no desire to explore that, plus there were no sources like the internet that make things very easy. I went to OF and wondered about the decoration in the sanctuary. Later on I found out that they are altars where Mass used to be said.

Only 2 years ago I discovered our heritage (thanks to the internet) and since then have been attanding the EF.

I expressed my surprise that you went straight to EF mass because it is still so unusual. I’m slowly getting used to this development and am very happy for people who can take this route.

I started out in the OF for the same reasons as Contra Mundum. They were so offhand and irreverent that I thought I had made a mistake. Then I found my present parish where both OF and EF are offered with devotion and reverence. The EF took some getting used to, but now I find both forms complement each other. So, I can’t vote in the poll since I go to both.🤷

I suppose it could also be a matter of sheer numbers. There are more OF Masses, so the likelihood of a new convert attending an OF mass is greater.

I do think YouTube plays such a great role now, which means a lot of new converts may try out an EF’s first if only out of curiosity for the Pomp and Circumstance.

Again, as I am hobbled by the “trial member” status, I cannot vote. So I will post my answer.
I currently attend NO mass, but not by choice. Were it available in something less than a 2-3 hour drive, I’d attend TLM.

Never been to an EF…no desire to go…especially after spending some time on the Traditional forumn…

Well, this is not very nice. Perhaps you should be more open minded and go for the mass. The forum is about people discussing things and expressing their opinion. There is a lot of venom coming from fanatical OF supporters, in case you haven’t noticed.

So, instead of apologizing for for some idiots that support the TLM and mending some fences while doing so, you call the OP narrow minded and you think that it is better to speak poorly of people that support the OF. Were you just trying to prove the OP point or what?

It is not my job to apologise for other people. I can only apologise for myself. My point is that you get nasty comments in both camps. I mean, you have called some supporters of TLM idiots right now. How rude is that? What is the purpose of such language? Should you not build bridges?

Stating that EF does not deserve a chance because she doesn’t like the people who attend it (but admitting that she has actually never been so the impression has been made here on an internet forum) is narrow minded and childish imo. And the poster who holds these views is not the OP btw.

I guess that some self-defined traditionalists do not apologize to God for the behaviors of others either.

Yes, and so? The OP was not talking on why he should not attend the OF it was talking on why he does not attend the EF. You simply extended his way of thinking to discourage him to attend the OF too.

Idiots choose to be idiots, and yes by acknowledging that I was trying to encourage the OP to reconsider attending the EF because the behaviors of a few do not define what the EF is about.

The poster did not say that the EF does not deserve a chance, he simple said that he has no desire. If you want to get him to the TLM either you create a reason or a desire. I doubt that a desire can be fueled by a direct insult or being defensive and I think that a reason independent from the bad ehaviors of some of the supporters would be more efficient.

BTW You are correct when you said that I misused the OP to define the individual to whom you responded.

Not only that but there are some Anglican, Episcopal, Lutheran, and other Protestant services which have been using some of the ICEL language in their liturgy (and hymns) so the English OF should be more familiar to them.

I’ve always had a somewhat protestant view of things, though I was only just baptised Catholic. You might say I was a Baptist who had not yet been baptised… even though I’d never been to one of their services, or any Church service. All I can say is that I was like my Anglican grandfather, who is technically protestant but doesn’t practice at all. I never practiced, but I was very protestant… and still am 😊 (as you have seen TrueLight).

Despite being very wary of ritualism, formalism, and legalism, I am deeply attracted to the E.F. of Mass. It lends a certain awe and majesty to life which is lacking.

Annabelle, I thought you were considering it at one point. You shouldn’t be dissuaded by people expressing their opinions, which everyone has a right to do.

You love to call people “idiots” and “stupid”.

Not very charitable, but you know that and are okay with that.

So you were never Protestant, GloriousOrder?

That makes sense.

I am a convert from the Presbyterian church. I attend a Latin Rite Church about 1 1/2 blocks from my house. The only form they have is OF, I think my 7 year old would hate the EF. I am trying to get to an EF Mass. I have a great interest in “Traditional” Catholicism. I really like the OF, but I am curious about the EF.

Who knows. Your child may find the genuflections, incense and bells interesting. 😃

Pardon me but have you spent some time on that forumn? Now…not everyone on there is that way. But some are…and I’ve had some real venomn personally directed right at me. There are some people that treat every OF as if it is a clown Mass…it gets old. Now if you shake your head yes and agree with everything…then you’re fine. But if you ask a question or try to understand something…or bring up an oppositve view…well look out…:ouch: But I’ve been really hurt by some of the things directed at me there…

That type of thinking…especially from my grandmother…when I was a teen was one of the reasons I left the faith. She was a lot for the same things oh but neglected to teach her children or grandchildren any of it…talk about missing the forest for the trees.

So why would I put myself in a near occasion of sin (by the uncharitable thoughts I might have…if for example someone was to give me a judgmental look for wearing pants) when I am perfectly happy with the OF…especially at my parish?

It was the OF that gave me a love for my faith again and so it is the OF I will stay with. If people want to go to the EF…that is fine with me…I’m just not one of them.

PS…before everyone jumps on my case…the near occasion of sin would be for what I might be thinking…NOT for going to that form of Mass…just to clarify…

most of our masses are OF at my parish, but once a month they have an EF mass.
i have attended one EF mass, and it was interesting and i think if i attended more of them i would like them a lot, but i just go to the OF.
