If You Were Previously a Protestant, Which Form/ Rite Do You Attend

I know someone who is born and raised Baptist and says the Byzantine Rite appealed to him the most. Being Baptist, he is at home with the constant singing.

Pardon me but have you spent some time on that forumn? So why would I put myself in a near occasion of sin (by the uncharitable thoughts I might have…if for example someone was to give me a judgmental look for wearing pants) when I am perfectly happy with the OF…especially at my parish?

It was the OF that gave me a love for my faith again and so it is the OF I will stay with. If people want to go to the EF…that is fine with me…I’m just not one of them.
Oh yeah, spent a lot of time on that forum. It can get a bit nasty. People have strong opinions. But that is usually the case on forums. Family life section can be just as bad, it’s not all hugs and kisses.

I just think that being so negative about Mass because you don’t like a bunch of anonymous posters on the forum is not a healthy attitude. I mean, it is Holy Mass we are talking about here. And perhaps you would be surprised if you went: I doubt anyone would react the way you imagine. People often write stuff that is exaggerated. I’m just saying give the EF mass a chance, if nothing but out of curiosity. It is your spiritual and cultural heriatege after all.

At this time I attend a very traditional OF Mass. After the Ordinariate is established, if there is an Anglican Use parish close enough I would probably attend their Mass.

It would be close to attending both the EF and the OF as their liturgy, (which is being revised) will hopefully have the participation of the congregation and the beautiful liturgy very much like the EF.

A lot of Catholics whom have spoken to express amazement that my first mass was an EF and they wonder how I, who was raised as an Evangelical Protestant was attracted to that form of the mass.

It is so different from what I was used to. It should have been alien or scary.
Being raised a pentecostal I found the idea of any Catholic Church alien/scary. Terrifying would be a more accurate word for how I felt the day I first walked in. I knew I was where I had to be - otherwise I don’t think I could have done it.

I still attend at OF at the first parish I attended. I would be interested in attending a EF just to see what it’s like, but I’m fairly happy where I am. I am at least over the terror of that first day!

😃
I remember how I wanted to go into Catholic churches but I was so intimidated. I wonder what I was expecting. People with 2 heads or someone to jump at me and force me to join in weird worship. Seems so silly now but the fear was real!

That makes sense.
I don’t know about the other vernaculars, though. Poland, for example, doesn’t have many Protestants (90% Catholic and 70% attend Mass) so it would be a moot point to take this kind of survey among that crowd.

I have never had the opportunity to attend an EF Mass (at least not that I know of.) The OF Masses that I’ve attended in my diocese are, by and large, incredibly reverent and I don’t feel like anything is “missing.” My home parish is wonderful. 🙂

I would like to attend an EF Mass sometime to see what it would be like, but I’m perfectly content where I am right now and it looks like my parish is going to do a great job with the new translation come Advent. 👍

I answered OF because the EF around here is only offered twice a month and it’s about 30 miles away.
Baptized LCMS and later migrated to the ALC/ELCA.
I actually jibe more with the EF because it is much closer to the LCMS service that I experienced in childhood. Of course, it was in English and there was congregational hymn singing but on the other hand it was ad orientem and communion was distributed kneeling at a communion rail.
The OF reminds me more of the ELCA service.

Granted, I did spend some time in a reformed church, which got me used to a more liturgical setting. Otherwise, I may have run from fright. 😛

It makes me wonder if converts are normally more attracted to the OF or other form/rite.

Which rite or form did you first attend or currently attend? If you are not a convert, which rite or form do your friends attend?

Disclaimer: I am not pitting one form or rite against another. This is just a poll.
Started off at a fairly conventional OF at church served by Jesuits, then after going to a Tridentine mass once or twice made the resolution to go their permenantly and now whilst i go to an ‘ordinary’ confession (because they aren’t scheduled in the EF parish) I only ever attend the Tridentine mass.

I would love to visit one too. The draw for me would be the hymns/congregational singing.

I know what you mean, since most of my extended family is pentecostal!

Also, there seems to be communal life. Everyone seems like one big happy family - at least at the church I visited.

Afterward there was food being heated up in Aluminum pans (chicken, potato salad and sandwiches). It was very relaxed and I felt really welcome.

I answered the question as if it were worded “which form would you like to attend?”.

Fortunately we are blessed by many Catholic churches in my area, but I haven’t found any that regularly offer the EF. I would also be interested in the OF offered in Latin or even the OF offered ad orientem.

Basically, the more reverent and sacred, the better.

I’m not really negative about the Mass…I try to go to daily Mass as often as I can…and not about the EF. I just don’t have a desire to attend one…what is so wrong about that? Nothing says I have to. Also…just so you understand…I would have to drive over an hour to go to one…probably by myself as my husband is a brand spanking new baby Catholic and has less desire then myself to go to one. Right now that’s where it stands…maybe one day it will change but right now…no desire. It’s not as if I would go running and hide if there was one offered in my town…there just isn’t…so I’d really have to have a desire (and the time) and I just don’t.

I know it will spark comments…but there is an OF Mass in my town in Latin but I don’t have a desire to go to that one either…does that make me a bad Catholic?

Seriously…I don’t get it…when you say you don’t have a desire to go to the EF…people take it so personally…it’s like saying you don’t like carrot cake…😃

I am not sure if there are any groups in New York forming missions/parishes to enter the Ordinariate. If not now I would assume maybe in the future. Hopefully at some point there will be a list of parishes within the Ordinariate. I believe there will be more coming as the Ordinariate is established and people actually are able to attend a Mass and learn what the Ordinariate is.

If you go to www.atonementonline.com there is a video of the Sunday High Mass that Rome has allowed them to use. As I mentioned the liturgy will be revised and most of the people coming into the Ordinariate would like a liturgy which is close to the EF in the vernacular, but many times Latin is used for specific prayers. It is fully participated in by the congregation. The video can be enlarged.

Although I really like my OF parish as it is very close to what I recall as a former Anglo Catholic in reverence and participation, with the old hymns, I do miss much from my former parish.

God Bless

I was baptized Eastern Orthodox as a child, then became Protestant in university and attended a non denominational, very contemporary church. Then I became Catholic. I’m technically Eastern rite and I like that liturgy very much too. I live near a Roman Catholic parish that does the OF of the Mass. However I try to make it to the EF as often as I can.

I’d say that the EF, or Eastern rite DL, is what I prefer the most. 🙂 It’s strange because as a Protestant I really disliked tradition. I guess that changed.

God bless

I’m with you on this.

No interest.

I like to understand what is being said and sung. I have always been this way, even when I was Protestant. From childhood, I always hated it–yes, hated it–I know it’s a strong word, but it’s the right word for expressing myself in this case–when missionaries would teach us a hymn or a Bible verse in the language of their mission field. I didn’t get it. I wasn’t from that country, so why did I care how their language sounded? I still don’t get it. It makes no logical sense to me at all.

I also dislike chant of any kind. I find it depressing (especially since so much of it is in a different mode than what we are used to, and much of it sounds minor key). I dislike the fact that it has no regular melody or rhythm. I find this upsetting in a time in history when there is very little order and rhythm to American life. I prefer music with strong and regular melody and rhythm. I find this comforting and reassuring, and to be honest, I find it more “godly” because God is a God of order Who established the laws of nature and the rhythms of life. I don’t like music that meanders, and I especially don’t like meandering music sung in a foreign language.

But I respect the opinions of others and I recognize that others come from a different place than I do. I am glad when others are able to attend the form and rite of their choice. I don’t expect everyone to agree with me and do it my way. But I do expect Christian to be nice and to use friendly language, both written and body, when they speak to each other.

I also respect the fact that Latin is the Official Language of the Catholic Church. I’m just not sure this means that the laypeople should expect to use Latin in the Mass. What exactly IS an “Official Language?” What does that mean? To me, it means that this is the language that the scholarly work is written in and passed along, and also this is the language in which the official business of the organization is conducted. Is Mass “Official Business?” I tend to think not.

Anyway, I see no reason for anyone to get negative about anyone else just because we hold different opinions and preferences, as long as we are willing to obey what our Church tells us to do.

I converted to Catholicism, but I was never a protestant. So, I didn’t vote in your poll. I attend the Ordinary Form though.

Well, I was welcomed into the church as of this past Easter and this might sound stupid but the reason I’ve never gone to a Latin Mass is because I don’t know Latin. lol. I would love to learn it but I don’t really have the resources to.

Hi Annabelle,

If memory serves me correctly, you had said befre that you were interested in attending but you were concerned about the dress code. So you did have somewhat of a desire.

Then you said in this thread that you have no desire because of the attitude of some in the Traditional Catholic forum.

So that’s why there is disappointment.
