Ignorance of the gaps

I like what you said there, cfauster. I know I come across as and irratable old “B” on here sometimes. But the very reason you mention at the end of your piece is why i ultimately left the Church. And not so much about science–we had a fabulous science teacher, a priest who had been a SEAL–but because of inconsistencies regarding some spiritual matters and failure on many counts to deal with specifics in my own spiritual life that eventually were more than well resolved elsewhere.

In retrospect, again, it is not so much the particulars of faith, though some merit much deeper examination, but the unwillingness of clergy to look simply and honestly at problems in spiritual life without getting so pious about them as to become totally impractical. In other words, as wonderful as the community is (I still have clergy who are dear and valued friends,) the obvious lack of introspection and critical thinking was just too much. And it was a good school. I’m grateful to have gone there. But in the end, no one was able to answer my questions sufficiently, though I cast rather widely in the large metro area where I lived at the time. Oh well. It was an interesting time. Made some good friends.
